§ Peter Coker, RA (British, 1926-2004) View of Staffin on the Isle of Skye signed on the reverse "Peter Coker" oil on board 20 x 34cm (8 x 13in) Other Notes: Peter Coker was a pre-eminent post-war British artist. Studying at the Royal College of Art at the same time as Coker were Jack Smith, John Bratby, Derek Greaves and Edward Middleditch; they became known as the Kitchen Sink School, a term coined by the critic David Sylvester in response to their unique brand of realism inspired by everyday domestic life in post-war Britain. Coker had discovered the work of Gustave Courbet while visiting Paris in 1950 and also that of Nicolas de Stael. Inspired by Courbet, Coker began to paint landscapes from nature in Normandy and Brittany by the mid-1950s. He continued to use bold colours in his landscapes, using thickly impasto paint to capture the power of natural forces. He also painted in Devon, Cornwall, Essex and, towards the end of his life, in North West Scotland. Coker published a book "Etching Techniques" in 1976. He became an Associate of the Royal College of Art in 1953, was elected a Royal Academician in 1972, and won an Arts Council Award in 1976. Condition is fine.

§ Robert Tavener, RE (British, 1920-2004) London Park No. 2 signed in pencil lower right "Robert Tavener" and inscribed "Artist's proof" lithograph 54 x 74cm (21 x 29in) Robert Tavener was born in Hampstead, London. After six years of war service, he attended Hornsey College of Art in 1946. He studied lithography and gained his art teacher's diploma from London University. In 1953 he took up a teaching post at Eastbourne College of Art and Design and later became Vice-Principal until his retirement in 1980. Tavener also taught at St Martin's School of Art for one day a week. He did much illustration work as well as commissions for organisations such as Shell, the BBC, London Transport and Penguin Books. He was a Senior Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter/Printmakers and had thirty-five solo exhibitions during his lifetime. Fine.

§ Peter Collingwood, (British, 1922-2008), M.3D6/3, a macrogauze wall hanging, woven linen and stainless steel, stamped signature and title plate to lower edge 300 x 94cm (117 x 37in) Provenance: Commissioned by the vendor's parents directly from Peter Collingwood in 1989 Other Notes: Peter Collingwood was the pre-eminent British artist weaver of the post-war era. His technical and aesthetic innovations have been influential throughout the world - most notably, his Macrogauze wall-hangings. Collingwood trained as a doctor, but had already discovered his vocation was for weaving. He was sent to Jordan during his National Service and whilst there, he created his own loom out of two deckchairs and made scarves for the officers’ wives. He was given a Bedouin tent-hanging which remained a treasured possession throughout his life and which formed the basis of his lifelong interest in textile structures from around the world. On his return to England, he studied weaving with Ethel Mairet and subsequently Barbara Sawyer and Alastair Morton. In 1957, he was given accommodation and workspace at the Digswell Arts Trust in Hertfordshire where he met the potter, Hans Coper. In 1969, Coper and Collingwood were given a joint exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum. In the catalogue, Collingwood wrote: “It is the loom’s precision that I try to use and develop in wall-hangings, aiming to produce something both controlled and impersonal. This may mean subtracting from the basic structure of the loom in order to give a new facility, as in the Macrogauze technique”. In a traditional weave the warp (the yarn which follows down the length of the loom) runs parallel to each other, however Collingwood’s Macrogauzes allowed stripes of warp to be moved sideways, to cross, twist and separate from each other and to even enter and leave the weave in the form of the weft (the yarn which runs across the width of the weave). It proved a perfect balance between the combination of traditional skill and visual abstraction. Collingwood moved to Nayland, near Colchester, in 1964 where he continued to work until his death in 2008. His work has gained worldwide recognition - as indeed has his writing, with five highly influential books on weaving which continue to have a lasting impact on contemporary weavers. He was awarded the OBE in 1974.

A LARGE QUANTITY OF BANKNOTES. Mostly German post World War I notes, the majority in mint condition. Various denominations, all collected by an officer in the British Occupation Army. The Reichsbank notes are complemented by several notes from around the world, during that period, etc. Contained in envelopes the odd notes will need to be steamed off the gummed flap. In most cases only the first note is attached on ethe end, by the gum.

A 'CIVILIAN's GULF WAR GROUP OF THREE MEDALS etc. A Gulf War medal with bar 16 Jan to 28th Feb 1991, named to Mr G W Kimberley BAE. An Omani Peace Medal , also Glorious Fifteenth National Day Medal 1985, awarded to Warrant Officer Kimberley Sultan of Omans Air Force. Also a certificate from the Saudi Royal Air Force. Graham W Kimberley participated in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm (August 1990-March 1991). Various photographs of planes Hunters & Jet Provost's/Jaguars and Graham Kimberley, etc. Also his epaulette After 16 years service in the Royal Air Force, he left to take up a position with the Royal Saudi Air Force in 1973. He left to join the Sultan of Oman's Air Force in 1981 to take up a position as Warrant Officer, serving in the Dhofar region during the Communist incursions . Hence the award of the two Omani Medals. In 1986 he left this post to return to the Royal Saudi Air Force, again as a Warrant Officer. It was here he served throughout Desert Storm and the Kuwait/Iraq war, for which he received his Gulf War Medal.

Dating post November 1913, a very rare illustrated brochure in horizontal format, with German text detailing the 8/22, 10/28, 14/35, 18/45, 22/55hp models with images of body types, chassis, engines and components. Also, the International Oesterr (Austrian) Alpenfahrt of 1913, with numerous testimonials and commercial coachwork details,128pp with a square-backed brown card cover over-printed with a H”nemann & Co of Amsterdam agency stamp and an embossed Audi script in gold. Together with two illustrated broadsheets for the 8/22PS. In very fine condition, both with short crease tears Historic Note: August Horch was barred from using 'Horch' as a trade name in his new car business after leaving his original company of August Horch & Cie. Motorwagenwerke AG. So, in 1909 his son suggested that as Horch meant 'Hear', the latin for 'to listen' was 'Audi' being a singular imperative form of 'Audire'. (3)

*A Rudge-Whitworth Lady's Tricycle. With a sloping fork crown design suggesting a post 1901 date, this 21-inch framed tricycle is finished in black enamel, nicely complementing the nickel-plated handlebars and cranks. Other features include a rear rack and basket, inch-pitch chain, Brooks saddle, bell, typical Rudge Whitworth mudguards rubber block pedals and an assayed silver name badge dating it to 1901 or 1902 (1)

*A Gentleman's Bicycle by A. Turner, 'Maker - Whyteleafe - Surrey', having a 24-inch black-enamelled frame numbered A7329. Dating circa 1905, this interesting bicycle from a previously unknown maker has 28-inch wheels, still fitted with Warwick and Dunlop tyres, both names highlighted in the tread, a 7-inch chain-wheel driving the rear wheel via a Coaster Hub, with 7-inch cranks and split rubber pedals. The flat, forward-turned 17-inch handlebars possess most of the original nickel-plating, the steering stem is fitted with an auxiliary single-pull stirrup brake, and other features include a rear rack, Brampton leather saddle, tool pouch, bell and a Lucas 'Silver King' oil-powered lamp dating post 1910. An interesting original machine with a gilt headstock insignia (1)

*1908 Rover Co. Ltd. 'The Rover' Roadster with a 26-inch frame numbered D5887 just below the saddle post. Other features include 18-inch up-turned handlebars with turned wooden grips, roller levers operating centre-pull stirrup brakes, 1/2-inch roller chain driving a free wheel via a 7-inch chain-wheel, Brooks long-nose leather saddle, bell and rear rack and, of course, the Rover shield mounted on the headstock, and open fork crown. A well-known and enthusiastically enjoyed Rover bicycle with accompanying paperwork (2)

*1924 Chater Lea Gentleman's Lightweight. Numbered 845 below the saddle post, the 22-inch frame sports a Chater Lea chain-set, a double-roller inch-pitch chain driving a reversible fixed-wheel, nickel-plated cranks with Chater Lea rat-trap pedals, nickel-plated accentuated drop handlebars, very rare Bowden Tyseley cantilever brake to the front wheel, Endrick rims but with non-matching but useable tyres, and a Brooks B17 'Narrow' leather saddle. A sound machine from this London factory, before its move to Letchworth (1)

*A circa 1889 J. K. Starley, 'Rational Rover' Safety Bicycle. A bicycle of significant historic design, and especially as this bicycle is also in sound, rideable condition. The nomenclature of J. K. Starley Safety Bicycles of the mid-1880s has been the subject of persistent errors and mantras over the years, that have not only confused both professional and amateur bicycling historians but have encouraged incorrect labelling in museum collections. Part of the blame lies with the H. W. Bartlett's book of 1931, and the unfortunate repetition of myths by luminaries like C. F. Caunter until the present day. Differing from the so called third model example currently in trust with the Science Museum, London, this example has a forward saddle extension, presumably to bring the rider closer, and at a better angle to the pedals. The bicycle carries the machine number of 1781, stamped in five places on the bottom bracket assembly, to include the cranks, cotter pins and axle. This bicycle has a 30-inch rear wheel and a 36-inch steering wheel, both with 3/4-inch crescent rims and black tyring. Drive is by 7-inch slotted cranks and a Brampton type inch-pitch block chain to a fixed rear sprocket, the chain-wheel and spindle held in two adjustable bearing races. A spoon-brake acts on the front wheel activated by a lever on the 26-inch wide handlebars, with rear facing turned grips. A coil spring lamp bracket of the type designed by Thomas Humber is fitted to an adjustable clamp around the steering head, just below the manufacturer's shield announcing, 'Rover - J. K. Starley & Co., Limited - Meteor Cycle Works - West Orchard - Coventry'. The business converted to a Limited Company in late 1888, which indicates a 're-introduction' of this model post-1888. Other features include: foot resting pegs, rear mounting step, chain-guard, correct period pedals, original handlebar grips and a later leather saddle top. A J. Lucas & Son-manufactured oil-powered Safety Bicycle lamp is fitted, representing their patent No 9764 of July 1886. The lamp is complete in all respects with undamaged glasses. A period J. Lucas & Son 'Challis' type bell is also fitted. In keeping with conservation practice, the writer adjudges that this machine has been repaired and renovated rather than restored. Replicated parts such as the front mudguard and spoon-brake have been made using a period machine as a design source, and this work can be clearly identified Historic Notes: A similar model, the so called third version, is shown in the George Moore engravings illustrated in The Wheel World of October and November 1885, both showing the Rover racing the HHC Kangaroo, to prove the new Rover design 'is the fastest in the World'. The earliest Rovers possessed 36-inch front wheels, because Starley correctly believed that the larger wheel cushioned road-generated shock. While other manufacturers generally opted for a smaller front wheel, Starley continued producing his 'Rational Rover' with a 36-inch front wheel until circa 1891. This highly original and historic 'Rover' has not only a secure place in the history of British bicycle manufacture, but also in the history of James Starley and his various inspired designs, his partner Sutton unfortunately having been killed in a horse and trap accident in 1886. James Starley with his Rover was producing the first practical safety bicycle, then the Holy Grail of the Cycle Industry; indeed, the bicycle was easy to mount and ride, incorporating a low saddle and chain drive to the rear wheel, key design features that were instantly copied by others, and that allowed for a resurgence in the industry. 'The Rover has set the Fashion to the World', was the slogan used in Rover advertising for a long time afterwards, and honours the engineering talents of John Kemp Starley. (1)

Other features include: side-pull Exage calliper brakes, 17-inch drop handlebars, Mavic 27-inch wheels, deep-set silver mudguards, Brooks B17 saddle, Exage ten-speed gearing with Shimano hand-controls on the down tube, rat-trap pedals with leather toe straps and quick release spindles. BADER DOUGLAS: (1910-1982) British World War II Ace (22.5 victories), recognized for his important role during the Battle of Britain. A printed 4to programme for the Bearsden & Milngavie Highland Games at Kimardinny Playing Fields, Bearsden, Glasgow, on 9th June 1979, opened by Bader in his capacity as Chieftan of the Games, and signed by him in blue ink to an inside page beneath his portrait and printed text. Together with a commemorative cover issued in honour of Bader's Bus Company individually signed by seven Battle of Britain pilots and other individuals associated with the pilot comprising Denis Crowley Milling, Hugh Dundas, Johnnie Johnson, Paddy Barthropp, Lord Goodman, Marmaduke Hussey and Joan Bader. All have signed with their names alone in bold blue and black inks. Post marked 11th September 1979. VG, 2 Douglas Bader made his last flight, in his Beech 95 Travelair, on 4th June 1979, less than a week before signing the present programme.
