[AUSTRALIA] a series of 31 ms. letters (1866-1877) by James Brent Price writing to his uncle (Matthew Porter Price) in London; closely-written on (mostly) 6/8 sides of octavo notepaper, from various addresses. * after an (unnamed) calamity at home, the writer emigrated in May 1866, leaving his wife & children in England, his first letter is dated 16/9/66 (Truro Cottage, 112 Gore Street, Melbourne). Probably following his original trade,he worked in a succession of linen drapers - at Melbourne, Launceston (Tasmania), Sydney, Bathurst (N.S.W.), Maryborough (Queensland) & finally Bathurst again. Some good detail on economic conditions (incl. goldfields information, railways & shipping)), but overall a difficult (& poorly paid) struggle for an older man (he was 45 in 1871), e.g. after losing a Melbourne position in that year - 'drapers young assistants preferred by many customers, who liked to flirt and all that sort of thing'; apparently several 'soft goods' houses were then failing. Little is heard of social life at this time; he appears to have spent much time in his single rented room reading & writing letters home or looking through a plethora of journals (some being sent out from England; his loss of family brooks large, a sister cannot give a loan towards a shop of his own, and (despite obvious hints) his uncle is not forthcoming. Things seem to improve with a more senior post with Kelk & Alford (at Sydney & Black Creek); there is a short account of 'W.G. & the English cricket tourists - ' Mr. Grace got very drunk, one day at the cricket field, and altogether the English men here left a very bad impression behind them'. At Maryborough (he joins the Templars (a fraternal temperance movement), remaining (& enjoying) their company on his return to Sydney & Bathurst. We leave him at the latter, in a single room, with once more the possibility of having to look elsewhere for work, and (? in 'quiet desperation') thinking of a small shop in a Bathurst suburb' - " there is a Providence that shapes our ends, rough hew how we may!" A fascinating series, well worthy of further study; his uncle recorded his embarkation at Tilbury in his own journal - see lot 793 in our February book sale ( a catalogue entry for which is available).
