A pair of George III silver salvers, by John Wakelin and Robert Garrard, London 1794, of oval form with gadroon borders resting on bracket feet, engraved with armorials, the reverses engraved No 5 13=7, and No 6 13=6, 23cm long, 27 oz approximately (2) The arms of Charles, first Marquis Cornwallis, KG (1738-1805). Joining the army at the age of 18 opened General Cornwallis`s distinguished military career. He briefly entered Parliament and served as Constable of the Tower of London. As major-general in the American War of Independence, he was second in command of British forces, yet forced to an ignominious capitulation by the inadequacy of his superior. In India, Cornwallis reformed the civil and military administration and dictated terms to Tippoo Sultan. His appointment as viceroy and commander-in-chief to crush an expected Irish rebellion prevented him taking up the post of governor-general of India in 1797. But in 1805, he was sent back to take command at Calcutta and died the same year at Ghazipore.
A George I silver mug, By Timothy Ley, London 1714, of tapering cylindrical form on a moulded foot, with a scroll handle, the body engraved with a reeded girdle to the upper half of the mug with inscription below `The gift of James Jennings Esqr to the Company of Skiners in Abingdon in the year 1714 Humphry Williams Master`, 11 cm high, 8 oz. The Skinners Company was one of three trade guilds founded in Abingdon in 1669. The trades incorporated in the Skinners Company comprised; tanners, cordwainers, curriers, glovers, parchmentmakers, leather-sellers, collarmarkers, cutlers, saddlers and ropemakers. Unfortunately few of their records appear to have survived. Some further information on the Abingdon company is contained in Bromley Challenor, 1555-1897, Abingdon 1898, p.159. It shows here that the company, along with several others (Grocers and Butchers) was established for freemen of the borough in 1669. James Jennings Esq was the son of Robert Jennings, headmaster of Roysee`s School in Abingdon, where he received his early education. He matriculated from Wadham College in 1686. He was the MP for Abingdon in 1710/13 and 1715/1722. Little is known about his career other than he was a Tory, being influenced by his father`s rejection from a fellowship at St John`s, Oxford and then from a post at Reading Grammar School, in all probability because he had appeared in arms for Charles I as part of Oxford`s Royalist garrison. His name was substituted for that of his father, Robert Jennings, to serve as Sheriff of Oxfordshire in 1694. The opportunity for him to take a parliamentary seat arose for the appointment of (Sir) Simon Harcourt I as lord keeper in October 1710. On becoming MP in 1710, he was included on one list of the 1710/11 session as one of the `worthy patriots` who had helped to detect the mismanagements of the previous administration. In August 1712, he presented to the Queen an address of thanks from Abingdon for the communication news of the peace to Parliament. On the crucial issue of the 1713 session, he voted, on 18th June, against the French commerce bill, being classed by one commentator as a `whimsical`. He did not stand at the 1713 election and returned again for Abingdon in 1715. See Parliamentary Archives.
