Gillan has written his reply on the bottom of the original letter he received asking for his autograph. Gillan (11 October 1885 - 23 April 1981) was a Scottish rower and colonial service official. He competed in the 1908 Summer Olympics and in the 1912 Summer Olympics. Good condition. Bachem (Bele, German artist and illustrator, 1916-2005) Collection of autograph letters signed, postcards signed and original card designs, comprising: c.20 autograph letters and postcards signed to Tom Maschler, containing 7 original illustrations in pen and ink, one with watercolour, 4 original card designs in pen and ink with watercolour, a small group of blank cards with artwork by Bachem, 3 envelopes addressed to Maschler, folds, the odd spot, v.s., c.1960s-80s (c.30)⁂ One of the few German surrealist illustrators, Bachem was denounced by the Nazis and banned from exhibiting during World War Two. Post war she became an occasional illustrator for Der Simpl, a satirical magazine published in West Berlin. She went on to have a distinguished career as an artist, illustrator and theatre designer. Tom Maschler was a British publisher and writer, noted for instituting the Booker Prize in 1969.

Sword and Blossom Poems from the Japanese, 3 vol., first editions, first printings with roman typeface to vol. 1 "Post Scriptum" and 38 Yotsuya Honmura address to vol. 2 & 3 titles, colour woodblock illustrations by Kason, Koho, Shoso, Yoshimune, Baison and Gesso, vol. 3 with signed bookplate of Gordon Pomfrey to endpaper, bound Japanese-style, original pictorial paper-covered boards, some light chipping to spine ends and corners, moreso vol.2, light soiling to covers, [Sharf p. 70], 8vo, Tokyo, Hasegawa, 1907-10.⁂ A charming set of these poems printed on hosho paper. Sharf postulates that they were likely produced in the wake of Japan's 1905 victory over Russia. They proved especially popular in England, a staunch political ally of Japan's during this period and the host of the 1910 Anglo-Japanese Exhibition in London in 1910.

He held his first of fifty solo exhibitions in Cape Town, 1944, and his work is held in seven public collections in South Africa, as well as the Willem Annandale Art Gallery, Lichtenburg.The artist is considered to be a second generation follower of Cape Impressionism, continuing the stylistic tradition established by Pieter Hugo Naudé (1869–1941), Pieter Willem Frederick Wenning (1873–1921), and Nita Spilhaus (1878–1967), whilst evolving into the bolder, slab like forms of Post impressionism characterising the present painting, Characteristic of the artist, the shacks of the present work are strongly outlined in black against a grey winter sky.
