The Royal Regiment”; within the oval, the Collar of The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle with crowned VR Cypher to centre. The Collar and Cypher set on a blue translucent enamel ground. Reverse retains both original loops. VGC
Badge. Border Regiment Victorian Officer’s post 1891 glengarry badge. A fine scarce die-stamped unmarked silver example. Maltese cross superimposed on a laurel wreath which rests on a tri-part scroll inscribed “The Border Regt.”. Lions between the arms of the cross, balls to the tips. Each arm bearing three battle honours. To the centre, within a circlet inscribed “Arroyo dos Molinos 1811” the Dragon on red enamel ground with “China” above on white enamel ground. Two loops to reverse. Minor service wear, generally VGC.

A good post 1901 example of a Home Service Pattern blue cloth helmet complete with gilt metal cross piece, ball top and rose bosses supporting a velvet backed chin chain. To the front, a gilt metal post 1901 regimental device. The interior retains leather sweatband, with cream silk edging. The interior with tailor’s label of Cater & Co and with ink name of “A.T. Forman Esq”. The helmet retains a good shape, gilt remains bright ... Accompanied by a metal storage tin of the correct pattern. (2 items)
WW1 17th Lancers, 1st Bn Royal Fusiliers Military Cross & Bar group of Eight Medals. Awarded to Major Oliver William Hepburn MC*, who was rewarded for gallantry on the opening day of the Battle of Messines and the first day of the Third Battle of Ypres. Comprising: Military Cross & Bar, 1914 Star, “1331 CPL O.W. HEPBURN 17/LRS”, British War Medal, Victory Medal, “CAPT”, War Medal, 1911 Deli Durbar, “LCE CPL O.W. HEPBURN DEC 12 1911”, 1935 Jubilee Medal, 1937 Coronation Medal. Group remains mounted as originally worn. The announcement of the award of the Military Cross appeared in the London Gazette on the 16th August 1917. “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in leading his Company with great fearlessness and skill to it’s final objective, which he consolidated under heavy shell fire, in aspiring all ranks with confidence by his fine personal example.”#11;Bar to the Military Cross, London Gazette 9th January 1918. “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when leading his Company in an attack. He displayed great coolness and fearlessness in the face of heavy hostile gun and rifle fire. Leading his men after a temporary check together with a party of several men from other units whom he had rallied and re-organised. The fact that his Company reached its objective was entirely due to his fine personal example and dashing leadership.”#11; Major Oliver William Hepburn MC* was born in 1888 and followed in his father’s footsteps joining the 17th Lancers, his father was a Sergeant with the Regiment. At the outbreak of the Great War he landed in France on the 8th November 1918. After serving for over 10 years in the ranks of the 17th Lancers he was commissioned into the 1st Bn Royal Fusiliers. Research accompanying the medals indicates that the MC was awarded for gallantry on the 7th June 1917. The Bar for gallantry on the 31st July 1918. On this day Captain Hepburn commanded D Company, which was a support unit. The Battalion advanced at Zero Hour 03.30 hrs. The battalion took heavy casualties due to machine gun, rifle and sniper fire. At “Jeffrey Trench”, the Battalion fought a desperate fight, the Company Commander Lieut Flack knocked out by a grenade. Captain Hopburn’s section were called in and under his direction the line was consolidated and held. In the post war years Major Hepburn served with the Indian Army and in 1941 retired with the rank of Major Quartermaster.

The collar bearing magnificent inward-facing Dragons, embroidered in gold directly into the cloth. Twisted shoulder-cords bearing Captain’s embroidered rank-badges. Slight fading and staining, stitching faults to collar-lace, minimal moth damage externally. GC

The front a post 1901 pattern helmet plate of Regimental pattern bearing a title scroll “The Royal West Surrey Regiment”. The interior with leather leather sweatband with cream silk edging. The lining with the tailor’s details of Cater & Co. Remains in good clean condition and a good shape.

A fine die-stamped facetted silvered star mounted with pierced gilt Garter on a blue enamel ground and to the centre, silver Prince of Wales plumes on translucent red enamel ground. Four screw posts to reverse. VGC 3rd Dragoon Guards wore gilt metal helmets with black over red plumes.

A cased Victorian diamond set bangle, brooch and earring suite, c.1850,possibly French. The bangle with a diamond detachable cluster head with a black champlevé linear border, to a pierced star and scalloped flower head plate. Hand engraved decoration to a black enamel threaded wire, to a replacement trifurcated hinged bangle. The matching brooch with an additional crescent swag, claw set with graduated old cut diamonds to a graduated chain fringe, and a pair of diamond cluster earrings with later post and butterfly fittings. A brooch fitting to enable the cluster head of the bangle to also be worn as a brooch. Tested as approximately 18ct gold. Later bangle fitting tested as approximately 18ct gold.
