Bernard Buffet, 1928-1999 LA FERME DE NANSE signed and dated 51 oil on canvas 113.6 by 146.2; 44.875. by 57.5in. Painted in 1951. Bernard Buffet came to the attention of the Paris art world in 1946 at the age of eighteen, when his self-portrait was shown at the exhibition Des Moins de Trente Ans at the Galerie des Beaux-Arts. In 1951 the artist's friend Jean Giono, let him a small house in Manosque in Haute-Provence where he lived for a short time before moving to an old 'bergerie' in Nanse, near Reillanne.. This work depicts the farmhouse in the dull grey tonality which typifies Buffet's work at the beginning of the 1950s.. BuffetÕs work of this period exuded a consistently sombre mood which matched the atmosphere of the post-war years. Simet, Vienna, circa 1920, enamelled in opaque blue and white geometric motifs, 8.7cm, 3 3/8 in, in fitted leather case; a cigarette case enamelled to simulate gold-veined turquoise, Glasgow import marks, 8.3cm, 3 1/4 in; a large case, Continental, circa 1925, enamelled in opaque black and white within Persian motifs, post-1893 French import marks; two further Austrian examples, early 20th century; three toothpick cases enamelled in translucent blue over patterned engine-turning, two with London import marks for 1932; and an earlier Cantonese mother of pearl needle case with gilt-metal mounts (10)
