He was awarded an immediate Military Cross for his actions as a platoon commander at the river Volturno on the 9th-12th October 1943. The citation for the award is as follows, “On 9-12th Oct 1943 south of R Volturno Lieut Ellis, whilst on patrol with only 2 men allowed a German patrol of 8 to come within ten yards of him. He wounded 4 and took 2 prisoner. After the crossing operation an enemy MG post opened up whilst his unit was forming up on the N of the river. Without hesitation he went with a few men, silenced the post and killed the enemy. He returned with no ammunition left after his platoon had started to attack, ran on and overtook them and eliminated a further MG with his platoon. At dawn his platoon was ordered to withdraw from an exposed position under heavy fire. He covered them out and was wounded. He rolled over a bank and pretended to be dead whilst parties of the enemy were around him. He remained there till dark when, in spite of his wounds he returned with great difficulty to Bn HQ and was only evacuated under protest. His aggressive patrolling during which he found a --- crossing whilst wading in the river by himself and his initiative, helped to provide prompt and accurate information of extreme value to the Bde. His personal courage and devotion to duty undoubtedly saved the lives of many of his comrades, and , his outstanding example was an inspiration to all ranks of his unit”.

Brontë [married name Nicholls], Charlotte [pseud. Currer Bell], novelist, 1816-55) Autograph address panel of a letter sent to her father, Rev. Patrick Brontë & with Autograph note by Patrick Brontë, sending a sample of Charlotte Brontë's handwriting, "The handwriting of Currer Bell - The many applications have prevented me from having any more to send P.B.", 2 circular ink post stamps, folds, 178 x 100mm., post stamp 19th June 1849 [& later note by Patrick Brontë after 1855]. ⁂ Anne Brontë died in Scarborough on Monday, 28 May 1849. Shortly after Charlotte and Ellen Nussey moved ten miles along the coast to Filey. From there they moved to the Hudsons at Easton Farm before Charlotte returned to Haworth on 20 June. It seems likely that this letter, addressed to her father was to announce her return home after the death of Anne. "A year ago - had a prophet warned me how I should stand in June 1849 - how stripped and bereaved - had he foretold the autumn, the winter, the spring of sickness and suffering to be gone through - I should have thought - this can never be endured. It is over. Branwell - Emily - Anne are gone like dreams... . One by one I have watched them fall asleep on my arm - and closed their glazed eyes - I have seen them buried one by one... ." - Charlotte Brontë.

Volkswagen Scirocco “Scala” 1989 - Far rarer than its brother the Golf and now becoming very sought after is the Volkswagen Scirocco and the special addition “Scala” was always a rare sight even when new. This particular car has survived incredibly well with diamond straight body work and no signs of rust and being a Scala, is as original and finished in factory white with its special edition alloy wheels (which have recently been restored). Open the tail gate and all the usual suspect areas where rust can be found are like new, including the underneath edge of the tail gate and boot floor areas. Inside the door shuts on the A post are signs of the original factory grease still and the car was Ziebarted from new to stop any rust getting into the chassis, doors or floor pans. The interior is incredible, totally original with no signs of wear not even on the driver seat bolsters, un heard of without being retrimed! The 1800cc injected engine fires instantly and soon settles to an even tick over, the vendor has just had a new exhaust manifold fitted. He reports that on the road the car feels so much newer than its age being quick enough to have some fun, while not being expensive to run. Its gear box and clutch are good along with all the general mechanics and electrics. But no more than you would expect from a car that has only 100,497 miles on the clock and is complete with an excellent full service history ( VW up to 68,000 year 2000 then VW specialist ) plus a file full of receipts, bills, old MOt’s and its handbook. With a current MOT through to June 2017 and not to be confused with the “Normal” VW’s on the market, this car is truly ready to go and offers an excellent opportunity for any collector of 80’s cars or Volkswagen fan.
