EDWARD VII: (1841-1910) King of the United Kingdom 1901-10. A very fine L.S., Edward R & I, as King, with holograph subscription ('Sir, My Brother and Cousin and dear Son in Law, Your Majesty's affectionate Brother and Cousin and Father in Law'), three pages, 4to, Buckingham Palace, 12th May 1908, to King Haakon VII of Norway. King Edward acknowledges the receipt of his correspondent's letter of the 29th April, delivered by hand by Fridtjof Nansen, 'in which you acquaint me of the termination of his Mission as Your Majesty's Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary at My Court'. The King continues to remark 'In taking leave of Monsieur Nansen I feel it due to him to assure Your Majesty that his language and conduct during his residence at My Court have been such as to merit My entire approbation and esteem, and have been uniformly and zealously directed to the maintenance and improvement of the relations of friendship, which happily subsist between Great Britain and Norway, and to which I attach the highest value'. A letter of good content and fine associations. VG Haakon VII (1872-1957) King of Norway 1905-57. Husband of Princess Maud of Wales, youngest daughter of King Edward VII and Alexandra of Denmark. Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930) Norwegian Explorer, Scientist & Diplomat. Nobel Peace Prize winner, 1922. Nansen served as Norwegian Minister to the United Kingdom from 1906-08. A popular figure in England, Nansen forged a good relationship with King Edward VII, although found court functions and diplomatic duties disagreeable, describing them as 'frivolous and boring'. On 15th November 1907, resisting the pleas of many, including the English monarch, Nansen resigned his post, although did not return to Norway until the following month, having spent some time at Sandringham as the guest of King Edward VII. Nansen did, however, return to England following the death of his wife, and had been persuaded by the Norwegian government to rescind his resignation until after King Edward VII's state visit to Norway in April 1908. His formal retirement from the diplomatic service is acknowledged in the present letter.
