A JAPANESE TSUIKOKU THREE-CASE BLACK LACQUER INRO MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY Both sides carved in the Ryukyu manner with Chinese figures in and around pavilions, the buildings nestled amongst tall trees, the top and base with swirling clouds, with a coral ojime and a moulded resin netsuke depicting a South Sea Islander clasping a large vase containing a small branch of coral, the inro 8cm. A LARGE JAPANESE WOOD NETSUKE OF A PORTUGUESE MERCHANT SHOWA OR LATER, 20TH CENTURY Depicted standing, holding a curved sword in one hand and his hat with the other, wearing broad pantaloons and pointed boots, his coat decorated with a pattern of scrolling clouds, signed Shosai in a rectangular reserve at the back, 9.2cm. A RARE JAPANESE BAMBOO SASHI NETSUKE OF A SHISHI BY MORIKAWA TOEN (1820-1894) EDO OR MEIJI, 19TH CENTURY The mythical beast depicted sitting on its haunches, holding a circular handle in its mouth and raised on a double lotus throne, the base with flowerheads, inscribed to the back Shosoin, hoko, heigoro no shishi baku, Morikawa Toen (copy of an incense burner handle with lion dog at the Shosoin Treasure House by Morikawa Toen) with kao, 10.3cm. Provenance: formerly the collection of Virginia Atchley (1911-2013), Los Angeles. Exhibited: the International Netsuke Collector's Society Convention, Honolulu, 1977. Cf. Morikawa Toen was known for his Nara ningyo (dolls) sculptures and as a noh actor. His work was admired by the Daimyo of Tosa, the magistrate of Nara, who awarded him with names from Japanese mythology. The Imperial household also became his patrons.
A JAPANESE WOOD NETSUKE OF A FROG MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY Realistically carved, the small amphibian dozing off on top of a wooden bucket, the sides with minute metal studs, inscribed Masanao underneath, possibly for Masanao of Yamada, Ise Province, 2.7cm. Provenance: an English private collection, Somerset, purchased in Japan.
A JAPANESE WOOD NETSUKE OF A MERMAID (NINGYO) EDO PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY Probably Nagoya, the smiling siren finely carved in red wood, holding her tail elegantly curled under her chin, her long hair trailing down her back, inscribed Tadatoshi in ukibori in a rectangular reserve underneath, 4.4cm. Cf. M T Coullery & M S Newstead, The Baur Collection, Netsuke, p.115, no.C224 for another example of a mermaid by Tadatoshi. The authors explain that in Japanese folklore, ningyo are lovely creatures, well-disposed towards humans and believed to share the secrets of the sea by listening to the murmurs of seashells. Eating one would also give you immortality.
A JAPANESE DOUBLE-SIDED LEATHER TABAKO-IRE (TOBACCO POUCH) EDO OR MEIJI, 19TH CENTURY Of rounded rectangular form and with a flap opening on each side, one mae-kanagu in copper modelled as two masks, the other a rectangular shakudo and gilt plaque depicting three friends seated by a fire drinking sake, the pouch made of foreign tooled leather, with a malachite ojime and a corozo nut netsuke carved as a laughing face winking, inscribed Masagyoku in a shaped cartouche at the back, the pouch 15cm.
