λ A JAPANESE BOXWOOD OKIMONO OF A MONKEY MEIJI 1868-1912 The primate depicted seated and examining a small hermit crab through a looking glass, his eyes inlaid with amber-coloured beads and with elements in ivory, signed Saijin (Talented Man) in a rectangular reserve underneath, 8cm. Provenance: from the collection of W B Tapp (d.1992), Bristol. C.f. F Meinertzhagen, The Meinertzhagen Card Index on Netsuke in the Archives of the British Museum, Part B, p.690, where the author mentions another comparable okimono of a monkey examining a sword bearing the same signature.

A JAPANESE SOMADA SCHOOL TWO-CASE LACQUER INRO EDO 1615-1868 The body decorated with typical iridescent shell inlays and kirikane, nashiji and fundame, one side with a small spider weaving its net and the other with a silver moon peeking from behind clouds, the lower tiers with various depictions of flowers and leafy branches, the shoulder, underside and the cord runners with brocade patterns and mon, together with a wood ojime and a netsuke shaped as a straw hat, the inro 5.7cm. Provenance: from the collection of W B Tapp (d.1992), Bristol.
SIX JAPANESE WOOD MASK NETSUKE MEIJI 1868-1912 Variously carved, one depicting a man with his mouth wide open in a scream; the second a bearded man to one side and another man with a squashed nose to the reverse; the third lacquered and with pinched lips, possibly Hyottoko; the fourth a large oni, signed Kokuzan; the fifth possibly depicting the witch Hannya, signed Deme, and the last a laughing man, signed Deme Takamitsu/Joman, 5.6cm max. A SMALL COLLECTION OF JAPANESE MINIATURE PIECES MEIJI 1868-1912 Including: three netsuke, one in pottery depicting Daruma with a two character mark underneath; another a manju netsuke in guri lacquer decorated with scrolls; the third in wood and lacquer and depicting a man with his face deep in a sake cup; together with three ojime, one in wood depicting many rakan and with a two character signature, another in red lacquer with a tori kabuto and a sho; the third in mixed metal with flowers and a butterfly, also signed, and with a small menuki shaped as a cat, 4.2cm max. A JAPANESE NETSUKE OF A KITSUNE FOX BY KAZUO MIZUTANI (B.1932) 20TH CENTURY The fox dressed as an itinerant monk, with a large hood, long robes and a wooden stick, its head turned to dexter and with the eyes inlaid, together with a small bronze fox depicted sitting on its haunches, 7cm and 3.8cm respectively. (2) Provenance: from the collection of Frank Robertson (d.2014). The fox-priest purchased in Tokyo in 1988 directly from Kazuo Mizutani.
AN UNUSUAL JAPANESE HORN MANJU NETSUKE MEIJI 1868-1912 Possibly moulded, the rectangular body decorated to one side with an armour-clad warrior handing his bow over to an attendant, the reverse with a sailboat caught in a storm, with large waves crashing against the hull, unsigned, 4.5cm x 3.8cm. FOUR JAPANESE WOOD NETSUKE EDO AND MEIJI PERIOD Two in light-coloured sandalwood, one depicting a tall sennin with a coat of mugwort leaves and holding a Chinese fan, the other carved as Hotei holding a large sack over his shoulder, the two others in dark wood, one carved as the Chinese general Kan'u with his guandao sword, and the other carved as an old woman, possibly Ono no Komachi, 9.3cm max. THREE JAPANESE MANJU NETSUKE MEIJI 1868-1912 Two in marine ivory, one depicting a writhing dragon amongst clouds, signed Gasho, the other with an elderly man and a bundled up child, signed Haneka, the third in bone and carved with a monster, bakemono, with a two character signature, together with a fourth netsuke carved from a rectangular section of marine ivory with Hotei and an attendant, unsigned, 5.6cm max. FOUR JAPANESE NETSUKE MEIJI 1868-1912 Two in stag antler, one carved as a bamboo rhizome, the other as an Asakuza-style sashi netsuke, together with a boar tusk carved as an eel, its eyes inlaid, the fourth carved from bone in the shape of a bell, all unsigned, 16cm max. THREE JAPANESE WOOD NETSUKE 18TH-20TH CENTURIES One carved as a small shishi crouching on its front legs, on a rectangular base signed Shunchikudo Joshu underneath, another as a recumbent kirin, its head turned to the back and with a two character signature for Gyokuseki, the third with two small rats gnawing at hazelnuts, unsigned, together with a three-case lacquer inro with a large wood fugu fish netsuke, 4.8cm max.
