A GRAYISH-WHITE GLAZED BOTTLE VASE, JOSEON DYNASTY 朝鮮王朝灰白釉瓶Korea, 18th century or earlier. The pear-shaped body supported on a short tapered foot and rising to a waisted neck with everted rim. The vase covered in a rich grayish-white glaze with densely scattered black specks, stopping unevenly below the interior of the mouth. The vase left undecorated save for five small dimples at the shoulder. Provenance: The collection of Teddy Hahn (1933-2012), and thence by descent to the present owner. The base with an old label, inscribed 'Korea. 14./15. Jhd. […]'. Theodor "Teddy" Hahn was a well-known and respected collector of netsuke and other Asian works of art. NETSUKE: KRIEGER, EINEN ADLER NIEDERRINGEND / Japanische Schnitzfigur, Asien / Japan, vermutlich Masse mit partiell gebräunten Partien, ohne Signatur. Vollplastische und detaillierte Darstellung eines stehenden Kriegers mit Adler. Leicht vornüber gebeugt stehender Krieger, eine Stange/ Fahne haltend und damit einnen Adler niederringend. H. 5 x B. 3,2 x T. 2,5 cm. (Guter Zustand; leichte Gebrauchsspuren).
NETSUKE: FRAU AUS EINEM PFIRSICH SCHAUEND / Japanische Schnitzfigur, Asien / Japan, Holz / wohl Buchsbaum, ohne Signatur. Vollplastische Darstellung eines Pfirsichs, schauseitig mit höhlenartiger Öffnung. Aus dem Inneren lehnt sich eine kleine Frauenfigur heraus. H. 3,5 x B. 4,2 x T. 3,4 cm. (Leicht verschmutzt; gering bestoßen/ zerkratzt).
A good Japanese tsuishu (carved red lacquer) four case inro, by Yosei, and a similar manju netsuke, 19th century, carved in high relief with immortals in a garden, the reverse with ladies playing Go beneath a pine tree, on a brocaded ground, with tsuishu and tsuio (red and yellow lacquer) scrollwork borders and a seal script signature ‘Yosei saku’ to one end, black lacquer interior, 8.8cm, the manju carved in high relief with irises on a brocade ground, unsigned, 4.2cm, together with a silver ojime cast in relief with rocks, fungus and irises, engraved three character maker’s mark, 1.9cm***CONDITION REPORT***The inro and manju are in good condition, with no chips, cracks or restoration.
