A group of two Japanese carved ivory netsukes together with an okimono: the first netsuke in the form of a seated man using an abacus, a ledger by his side, signed Haru to red lacquer tablet, Meiji, 4 cm wide; the second in the form of an oni chanting a prayer and holding a percussion instrument, a large parasol on his back, signed Shogetsu, Meiji, 4 cm; the okimono in the form of a man trying to remove an insect from his bald head, signed Fusetsu, Meiji, 4 cm [3].
A 19th century japanese, carved ivory netsuke of a baku, 4.5cm wide with a carved ivory netsuke modelled as a monkey seated resting beside a trunk, 5cm wide (2) (at fault) An early 17th century Japanese manuscript, the Sankai Ibutsu, describes the baku as a shy, Chinese mythical chimera with an elephant's trunk, rhinoceros' eyes, an ox's tail, and a tiger's paws, which protected against pestilence and evil, and was said to 'eat nightmares' or protect against nightmares.
