A FINE IVORY NETSUKE OF SEVEN HUNGRY MONKEYS BY HOICHIBy Hoichi, signed Hoichi 芳一 saku 作Japan, Tokyo, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)A very fine and dense carving of a large monkey with six young monkeys portrayed in various attitudes. The large monkey is biting into a peach, while a young monkey in front of her is trying to reach the fruit. The other monkeys are climbing on top of the large one, clambering and pushing and pulling on each other. Another smaller monkey on top has managed to find another peach and is heartily biting into it. The hairwork is masterfully incised and all the eyes are minutely inlaid with pale translucent horn. The style of the carving, as well as the finish and the unstained ivory, is reminiscent of Kaigyokusai Masatsugu. The signature is found on the underside in a rectangular reserve, HOICHI saku. The carver probably comes from the school of Hojitsu in Tokyo. JOSUI: A LARGE BAMBOO SASHI NETSUKE IN THE SHAPE OF A MANTISBy Josui, signed Josui 如水Japan, Nara, dated 1872The sashi netsuke cut from a large section of bamboo and shaped as a stylized mantis, the wings incised with large characters. Two large himotoshi in the center.Signed and inscribed: 寿山, 壬申夏日製、於竹影居、如水漁人 “Juzan, mizunoe-saru, natsu no hi sei, Chikueikyo nite, Josui gyojin” [Felicitous Mountain (in large characters on the closed wings of the mantis), made on a day in summer, in the year of mizunoe-saru (1872), at the Chikueikyo (Studio in the shade of bamboos), by Josui gyojin]With a seal:竹宮 “Takemiya” [Bamboo Palace].There is no information on the artist, however he must have been related to Gyokkin (1816-1880) or Morikawa Toen (1820-1894), who carved very similar pieces and were both active in Nara. Their netsuke are exceedingly rare. The ridged inside of the suribachi is well-carved. A little inlaid silver clasp 'repairs' a simulated crack near the rim on the mortar. SHOKO: A WOOD NETSUKE OF AN ONI STIRRING MISOBy Shoko Sugunoya, signed Shoko 尚古Japan, Takayama, Hida school, mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Finely carved as a seated oni vigorously stirring miso paste inside the suribachi before him, the oni's eyes inlaid in dark horn. He wears a monk's robe, with one shoulder uncovered, decorated with clouds - signifying he is a repentant oni, now performing the serious task of stirring miso paste, rather than causing mischief. Natural himotoshi, though the carving certainly has okimono-character. SEIYODO TOMIHARU: A RARE WOOD NETSUKE OF A SNAIL ON A TARO LEAFBy Seiyodo Tomiharu (1733-1810), signed Nihon...Seiyodo Tomiharu kore o chokoku, Tenmei ni no toki ni, mizunoe tora toshi... 日本...青陽堂富春彫刻之 干時天明二壬寅年...Japan, Iwami province, dated 1782 (Tenmei 2), Edo period (1615-1868)Carved from finely stained boxwood and depicting a snail slithering across a folded taro leaf. The composition is full of movement, achieved by the many curls of the stem and leaf, and the foot of the snail, as well as its spiraling shell. The foot of the mollusk is treated with fine ukibori pimples and the veiny structure of the leaf is achieved naturalistically. To top it all off, the entire surface of the leaf is treated with extremely fine ukibori, appearing like waves and simulating the natural surface of the taro leaf - this can only be fully enjoyed when viewed under a magnifying glass or microscope - the sheer skill needed to pull this off is remarkable! One large himotoshi through the underside, the other 'natural' through the leaf. Signed in partially worn ukibori characters Nihon...Seiyodo Tomiharu kore o chokoku, Tenmei ni no toki ni, mizunoe tora toshi... A Japanese intricately carved boxwood Netsuke of a Dog of Fo, bearing signature. Height 35 mm. CONDITION REPORT: The Netsuke appears to be in extremely good order with no splits or cracks. There do not appear to be any losses and the piece is in generally very good order. The piece is very dusty and dirty in places and has some minor paint splashes to the top surface.
