λ A JAPANESE IVORY NETSUKE OF A RAT MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY The rodent naturalistically carved, seated on its haunches and nibbling at a candle it holds tightly between its front paws, its eyes and the wick inlaid in horn, signed Okatori in a rectangular cartouche to the back, together with a paper label inscribed 'Okatori', 4.2cm. Provenance: from the collection of Collingwood 'Cherry' Ingram (1880-1981) and thence by descent. Cherry Ingram was a famous British ornithologist, plant collector and gardener who became renowned for his knowledge on Japanese cherry trees. A COLLECTION OF EIGHT JAPANESE NETSUKE EDO PERIOD AND LATER, 18TH CENTURY AND LATER Seven made of wood, variously carved as Daruma, Shoki the Demon Queller, a sennin holding an alms bowl, a warrior holding a shoe, a rabbit and its leveret, and a parrot on a pine branch signed Gyokko, the eighth in mother of pearl and carved as a squid with amber eyes, together with a small Chinese jade carving of a monkey carrying its young over its shoulder, 7.7cm max. A JAPANESE WOOD CARVING OF A MONKEY, OKIMONO MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY The primate with inlaid eyes and depicted standing wearing long robes and a Shinto hat with circular medallions inlaid in horn, holding a kagura suzu rattle for the kagura Shinto dance, the base signed Sansho with kakihan, raised on an associated rectangular base, 21.2cm. (2) Cf. F Meinertzhagen, The Meinertzhagen Card Index on Netsuke in the Archives of the British Museum, Part B, p.697, for a comparable okimono of a monkey dressed as a Shinto priest by Sansho.
λ FOUR JAPANESE IVORY NETSUKE MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY One a smoking man, reclining and with a small monkey examining his ear, signed Tomochika; another a man and two dogs, holding one over his head and pushing the other one down with his foot; the third a seated sennin with a gourd hanging from the end of his staff, a woven basket beside him; the last carved as Binzuru Rakan with his pet tiger, 6.1cm max. (4) Provenance: from an English private collection, West Yorkshire, formed in the 1970s and 1980s.
λ THREE JAPANESE IVORY NETSUKE MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH AND 20TH CENTURY One carved as a large boar sleeping on a bed of autumnal leaves, with long grasses and ears of wheat issuing from rockwork beside it, some details inlaid, signed Kaigyoku Masatsugu after the famous model by Kaigyokusai Masatsugu (1813-1892); another depicting a voluptuous Okame wearing loose robes revealing her bosom and holding a circular fan, inscribed Mitsuhiro; the third Handaka Sonja holding an alms bowl from which a large dragon emerges, signed Hidemasa; together with a Chinese uncut seal carved as a lion dog on a tall plinth, with long inscriptions to the sides, 5.6cm max. λ TWO JAPANESE IVORY NETSUKE EDO AND MEIJI PERIOD, 18TH AND 19TH CENTURY One carved as Tobosaku Sennin, the tall sage with a joyful expression holding a large Peach of Immortality before him, the other carved as a reclining goat, its head turned over its back; together with a Chinese seal, possibly made of narwhal tusk, carved as a ferocious-looking lion dog with a paw resting on a ball, raised on an octagonal base and with a large character underneath, 8cm max. (3) Provenance: from an English private collection, West Yorkshire, formed in the 1970s and 1980s.
A SMALL JAPANESE SIX-FOLD PAPER SCREEN, BYOBU MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY Painted with two large cranes and other smaller birds in a luxuriant garden, a meandering river cascading behind them, with flowering prunus and pine trees on the gold background, together with a small collection of Japanese and Chinese works on paper, including woodblock prints of figures and an album of paintings, the screen 61cm x 139cm. (9) Provenance: the collection of Collingwood 'Cherry' Ingram (1880-1981) and thence by descent. Cherry Ingram was a famous British ornithologist, plant collector and gardener who became renowned for his knowledge on Japanese cherry trees. See lot 400 for another piece from Cherry Ingram's collection, a netsuke of a rat by Okatori.
