An Ivory Okimono of Gama Sennin, the immortal cavorting on one leg as small toads clamber over him and the leaf-bundle across his shoulder, a large toad shelters humourously beneath the hem of his robe, details etched in black, height 8cms, unsigned, Meiji period: And An Ivory netsuke of a Mendicant Priest, the figure stands on one foot wearing an elaborately chased robe and holding a begging bowl before him, unsigned, 19th Century. Late 19th-very early 20th century AD. A mixed group of carved ivory netsuke figurines comprising: a standing robed figure holding a staff, wearing a tight-fitting cap, one eye bulging and the other closed; a standing figure in loose jacket and trousers, both hands resting on the head of a swaddled baby; an elderly figure crouching, holding up a disc mirror(?) with image of a cat(?) on a tiled floor. 44 grams, 31-48mm (1 1/4 - 2"). Property of a Warwickshire gentleman; formerly in the private collection of the famous actor Leslie Phillips; acquired 1950-1960. Born in 1924 in London, Leslie Phillips attended the Italia Conti Academy where he developed the slightly affected accent which became his trademark. He usually played a roguish, suave charmer, and also enjoyed successful comic roles in the early Carry On films and on radio’s The Navy Lark. He has appeared in more than fifty films, plays and TV series spanning six decades; and recently gained new fans through his appearances in the Harry Potter films. He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 1998 Queen's Birthday Honours; promoted to Commander (CBE) in the 2008 New Year Honours. [3, No Reserve] Fine condition.
* Two Japanese wooden netsukes, one carved, two puppies and with signature, the other a mouse and mushroom also signed (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The puppy netsuke is in very good condition with no visible damage, no repairs and no restoration. The mouse has minor nibbles to one ear and stress fractures across the shell. A piece of the shell looks to have been broken away and reglued. The piece is also very dusty within the carving.
A FINE QUALITY 19TH CENTURY JAPANESE EDO/MEIJI PERIOD CARVED STAG HORN NETSUKE, unsigned, in the form of two rats on top of a clam shell, the details engraved and stained, the eyes of the rats inlaid, 2in wide; together with a red-ground lacquered wood two-case Inro, also unsigned, decorated with characters in inlaid mother-of-pearl and also decorated with extended foliage, 2.8in wide & 2.5in high.
