A collection of Middle eastern and Oriental jewellery to include silver white metal collar chain link necklace together with a similar bracelet, a tear drop shaped mother of pearl pendant with hand painted Indian decoration, a carved jade pendant with bird decoration, a Chinese carved ivory brooch, and a green rabbit netsuke. Two wood netsuke, comprising: a seated traveller wearing waraji, 7 cm long; and a seated kirin with its head raised into the air, 4 cm high. 19th or 20th Century (2). Please note that some deterioration or damage extant, including: a loss of patination and/or detail, particularly apparent on the first netsuke.
A wood netsuke, carved as a recumbent goat with its torso and head curved slightly towards the left; the himotoshi formed by a gap between the front and rear left hooves; about 4.5 cm long the base inscribed with two worn kanji, and a kao; together with a green stone figure of a ram or goat, 6 cm long (2)Provenance: The Property of a Lady. From a Private UK. Collection. As an animal of the Japanese Zodiac, the goat is a popular subject for netsuke carving. Compare for example a similar figure, carved by Tanaka Minko during the Edo Period, offered by Bonhams, London on 8-5-2016 (lot 29).. Please note that there are areas of damage to this lot; the signature of the netsuke, notably, is severely worn. The eyes of the wooden netsuke are carved into the wood.
A wood netsuke of Hotei with three karako, unsigned; together with an ivory or bone ojime, designed as a group of bats and a picture, on ivory or card, of Shah Jahan, [1592-1666] and Mumtaz Mahal [1593-1632], Empress Consort of The Mughal Empire [3]Provenance: The Property of a Lady. Inherited from the vendor's Grandparents in Somerset, and all thought to have been acquired during the 1920's or 1930's.The double portrait here recalls, of course, the monumental Taj Mahal, built in white marble as a Mausoleum for Mumtaz, from AH1042 [1632]. Shah Jahan also constructed a new city at Delhi [Shahjahanabad]; he ended his life as a prisoner of his son, Awrangzib, in Agra, and was buried with Mumtaz in The Taj Mahal [The World of Islam/Edited by Bernard Lewis/Thames and Hudson/ 1992, refers].Please note that this lot contains ivory, and is therefore subject to all CITES regulations.
