A Rare Ivory Netsuke of a Cat, 18th century], seated on rounded oblong plinth pierced top to bottom by the himotoshi (forming a mouse hole?), the well modelled and detailed cat seated eyeing its prey in some imaginary branch above, 3.4cm wide *An exceptional piece of observation and of sculpture-in-miniature. The cat in Japanese art is usually depicted with ruff and/or ribbon. Its unusual absence in this instance suggests a cat at large
Toyomasa, mid 19th Century, a fine and rare Tamba School wood netsuke of sealife, including a carp and crayfish, the details boldly carved and with a good polish, 5.5cm . Signed Toyomasa (carved on an oval). There were two Toyomasas, father and son, of which this is probably the father. He was born in 1773 and died in 1856 and is described by Meinertzhagen as 'a great master with a unique and individual style. See Neil Davey, Netsuke Handbook of Ueda Reikiche, No. 1254
