A mid Victorian emerald and diamond heart pendant, dated 1851, the central square cut emerald mounted within a pave set surround of cushion shaped old brilliant cut diamonds, suspended from an old cut diamond five stone loop, approximately 3.00 carats total, mounted in gold backed silver, with a glazed locket to the reverse, the reverse mount engraved ‘Given to Mary Marchioness of Salisbury by Arthur Duke of Wellington 1851’, 3cm long overall. Mary Catherine Stanley, Countess of Derby (1824-1900), grande dame and politician manque, is most remembered for her friendship with the Duke of Wellington. Her father, George Sackville West, fifth Earl De La Warr, had known the ‘Unprecedented Hero’ in the Peninsula, introducing Wellington to his daughter when she was a young girl. The Countess and the Dduke remained close until his death in 1852, writing regularly. She married twice. The first marriage in 1847 to James Gascoyne-Cecil, second Marquess of Salisbury, was a match according to the aristocratic code. It did, however, act as a platform for her political ambitions, turning their home, Hatfield, into a focus for Tory politicians. Two years after Salisbury’s death in 1868, she married one of the first Hatfield circle attenders, Edward Henry Stanley, fifteenth Earl of Derby, supporting his career, and political shifts, to the end. Although, by the 1880s she had ‘learnt to hate politics’, and by her death in 1900 she had become increasingly reclusive, spending her moments reminiscing on the years she had spent with her dearest friend, the Duke of Wellington.
