Derek Head was born in Malta in 1925. He went into the Royal Navy in 1942, and was commissioned into the Royal Naval Voluntary Reserve. He served in Home Waters and in the Far East and was awarded the Voluntary Reserve Decoration at the end of the war. His time in the Navy gave him a valuable background knowledge of warships and an introduction to ship recognition models. During wartime Bassett-Lowke produced a large number of allied and enemy warship models which had practical uses of teaching aids and for warship recognition. Derek Head spent 60 years acquiring the most comprehensive collection of Bassett-Lowke models, both warships and merchant ships, and acquired virtually all the Bassett-Lowke models which had been made. He acquired a deep and extensive knowledge of these models and this unique knowledge was brought together into a book, Bassett-Lowke Waterline Ship Models, which is now considered the definitive authority on this subject. Derek Head also collected waterline ship models, scaled one inch to a hundred foot, from a wide range of model makers, but all are of a particularly high standard of accuracy and skill of construction. His collection at the time of his death numbered around 2,500, probably one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of its type in the world, certainly in the case of Bassett-Lowke ship models. In the catalogue, dates indicated after liners are their years in service
