A GOLD REPOUSSE PECTORAL PENDANT DEPICTING TWO GARUDA, VIETNAM, FORMER KINGDOMS OF CHAMPA, CIRCA 10TH CENTURYPublished: The Zelnik Istvan Southeast Asian Gold Museum, Budapest, 2013, page 49.The crescent-shaped pectoral is finely chased, embossed, and incised, with a band of lotus petals along the upper rim above two mirroring Garuda flanking a neatly inlaid, central chalcedony intaglio depicting a four-armed deity, all surrounded by repeating stylized sword designs. Provenance: Ex-Collection of The Zelnik Istvan Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above. Dr. Istvan Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Some old wear, small manufacturing irregularities, very minor old repairs, and light tarnishing, all as to be expected for a gold object more than a thousand years old.Weight: 24.6 g Dimensions: Length 14.9 cm Garuda is a half-bird, half-human creature that appears in both Hinduism and Buddhism. The mythological account of Garuda's birth in the Mahabharata identifies him as the younger brother of Aruna, the charioteer of the sun god, Surya. Garuda's mother, Vinata, mother of the birds, was tricked into becoming the slave of her sister and co-wife, Kadru, mother of the nagas (serpents). The lasting enmity between the birds, particularly Garuda, and the serpents, is attributed to this. The nagas agreed to release Vinata if Garuda could obtain for them a drink of the elixir of immortality, the amrita, or soma. Garuda performed that feat, thus giving the snakes the ability to slough off their old skins, and, on his way back from the heavens, Garuda met Vishnu and agreed to serve him as his vehicle and also as his emblem. Garuda is described in one text as emerald in color, with the beak of a hawk, roundish eyes, golden wings, and four arms and with a breast, knees, and legs like those of a hawk. He is also depicted anthropomorphically, with wings and hawk-like features. Sometimes Images of Garuda are used by devotees of Vishnu to designate their affiliations; such images appear on coins throughout various periods and on ritual vessels and jewelry, like this lot. Garuda, also referred to as Garula, are golden-winged birds in Buddhist texts. Under the Buddhist concept of samsara, they are one of the Aṣṭagatyaḥ, the eight classes of inhuman beings.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Galerie Zacke, Vienna, 4 December 2020, lot 22 Price: EUR 13,904 or approx. A WHITE AND EMERALD-GREEN JADEITE 'PHOENIX' TABLE SCREEN, CHINA, 19TH CENTURYOf rectangular form, carved in low relief to one side with a phoenix standing on a rocky outpost beside a towering tree, the other with a river landscape with some villagers on the coast as a fisherman makes his way to the shore, the calm scenery detailed with pine and willow trees, imposing rockwork, and a modest bridge. The translucent stone of white, pale gray and emerald-green hue with distinct icy inclusions. The fitted hardwood stand carved in openwork with scrolling foliage.Provenance: From the collection of Dr. Wou Kiuan. Wou Lien-Pai Museum, coll. no. Q.2.1. Dr. Wou Kiuan (1910-1997) was a Chinese diplomat and noted scholar of Chinese art. His father, Wou Lien-Pai (1873-1944), was one the leading political figures of early 20th century China, remembered for his role as speaker and leader of parliament during the turbulent years of the Republican era. Dr. Wou himself embarked on an illustrious career in diplomacy until his retirement in 1952, when he settled in London and devoted the rest of his life to the study of Chinese art. It was no doubt fortuitous that Dr. Wou's years of collecting coincided with an abundant availability of exceptional Chinese art on the London market. From the mid-1950s to the late 1960s he was able to form a collection of well over 1,000 works that together represented virtually every category of Chinese art. At the heart of Dr. Wou's drive to collect was a burning desire to preserve the relics of China's rich historical past scattered across Europe, and to promote Chinese art and culture. It is unclear when Dr. Wou conceived of the idea to create a place to house his collection, but in 1968 he opened the doors to the Wou Lien-Pai Museum, named in honor of his father. Over the years the Museum became a 'must see' destination for collectors, academics, and visiting dignitaries, and Dr. Wou would delight in leading his visitors through the galleries, recounting stories of China's glorious history.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and manufacturing irregularities, light scratches, and tiny nicks.Dimensions: Size 18.3 x 10.2 cm (excl. stand) and 24.5 x 11.4 cm (incl. stand)Weight: 406.8 g (excl. stand) and 459 g (incl. stand) Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Sotheby's Paris, 10 December 2019, lot 108Price: EUR 12,500 or approx. A FAMILLE VERTE BISCUIT FIGURE OF BUDDHA, QING DYNASTYExpert's note: While the enamels on the Buddha's robe and legwear are quite finely worked, the craftsman paid special attention to the unglazed face, hands and feet. The fingernails and wrinkles of the toes for example show the high level of skill which normally is expected only from 18th century wares.China, 18th-19th century. Finely modeled and seated in padmasana on a single lotus pedestal with the leaves pointing upwards, Buddha holds a miniature seven-tiered pagoda, and is glazed in aubergine, emerald-green, and pale yellow. He wears a beaded necklace and a famille noire robe with a lotus design hem, painted with butterflies, peony, prunus, aster, and hibiscus flowers. The trousers show a soaring crane amidst swirling clouds. The snail-curled hair of the Buddha is glazed in a vibrant blue while the unglaze biscuit face has a serene expression set with heavy-lidded, downcast eyes, subtly smiling lips, and elongated lobes.Provenance: From a private collection in central California, U.S.A. It was modelled by Thomas Nicholls and coloured and gilt by Charles Campbell of Harland and Fisher. This bowl was commissioned by Burges for his own collection using the funds he received for the work. Exotic antique works of art, such as the present example, mounted with precious metals and coloured enamels are typical illustrations of Burges's enthusiasm for collecting and his antiquarian tastes. Burges commemorated his projects by having archaic items mounted and inscribed in this fashion. Another example of this, now in The Bute Collection, is his Cat Cup of 1867, an elaborately mounted Chinese crystal beaker which Burges had made for himself after his failed competition entry for the Law Courts, eventually won by G.E. Street. It is inscribed around the foot WILLIAM:BURGES:IN:REMEMBRANCE:OF:THE:LAW:COURTS:COMPETITION:AD:MDCCCLXVII.
