A FINE EMERALD-GREEN-GROUND AND GOLD BROCADE SILK CHUBA19th century, the brocade 18th centuryThe elegant garment tailored from eighteenth-century silk brocades finely woven in gold threads with multiple roundels enclosing dragons pursuing flaming pearls amidst flames, all surrounded by the Eight Precious Things interspersed with wispy clouds, all on a vibrant emerald-green ground, the inner flap obtained from a different brocade decorated with blossoming lotus issuing scrolling tendrils and acanthus leaves, the interior lined with patterned cherry-red cotton. 193cm (76in) wide x 137cm (54in) long.Footnotes:十九世紀 綠緞織金團龍紋藏袍 袍料為十八世紀Provenance: Linda Wrigglesworth, London來源:倫敦Linda Wrigglesworth收藏Finely tailored from sumptuous emeral-green and gold brocade, the present garment would have been worn by a Tibetan nobleman. During the Qing dynasty, it became an established practice for the Court to send gifts of silks and garments to Tibet because of the strong attachment of the Manchu rulers to Tibetan Buddhism and the political relations. The elegant Chinese silks were then tailored to make up garments worn by aristocratic Tibetans, who traditionally wore robes characterised by wider cuts and a simpler style of front overlap and fastening. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
