Provenance: From a private estate in Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom. The wood base with an old inventory number '8693'. Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and firing irregularities. A SANCAI-GLAZED APPLIQUE-DECORATED POTTERY JAR, TANG DYNASTY 唐代三彩花卉罐China, 618-907. Rising from a splayed foot to a short rim, the sides decorated with two bands of flowers and conch shaped medallions, splashed overall with emerald-green, chestnut, and straw-colored glazes pooling over the sides and stopping irregularly above the foot, exposing the white slip. The base unglazed. Provenance: Collection of Senator Hugh Scott. Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, donated from the above, accession number 91.442 (inscribed to base). Collection of Steven J. Harvis, New York, acquired from the above. A label 'Steven J. Harvis Collection 175 New York' to the base. Hugh Doggett Scott Jr. (1900-1994) was an American lawyer and politician. He represented Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives and the US Senate, and served as Minority Leader from 1969 to 1977. Steven J. Harvis was a Manhattan attorney for 50 years and built an international law firm as the senior partner. He has been collecting, studying and dealing in Chinese works of art from the Shang Dynasty through the Republic Period for more than 35 years. His relationship with the Chinese art departments at the major New York auction houses including Christie's and Sotheby's goes back over 30 years.Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age and as expected from an authentic Tang dynasty vessel. Well potted with everted sides rising from a flat base to a foliate rim, the interior delicately molded in shallow relief with a large chrysanthemum bloom wreathed in trefoil leaves, the sides with flowerheads and scrolling vines, all in amber and emerald-green glazes reserved on a cream ground and pooling nicely in the recesses. The exterior applied with an amber glaze stopping above the base to reveal the reddish-buff colored body.Provenance: British trade. AN EMERLAD-GREEN GLAZED 'HUNTING SCENE' POTTERY VASE, HAN DYNASTY 漢代綠釉狩獵紋雙輔首陶瓶China, 206 BC to 220 AD. Of compressed globular form, rising from a tapering foot to a waisted neck, the shoulders encircled by a band depicting a hunting scene with mythical beasts, dragons, birds, and two taotie masks issuing mock ring handles, all in high relief. Covered in a thick layer of deep emerald-green glaze, pooling nicely at the upper rim to form a number of distinct glaze drops.Provenance: Prima Porta Antiquities, Galeria Sztuki Starozytnej, Warsaw, Poland, 15 April 2005. A Polish private collection, acquired from the above. A copy of a Certificate of Authenticity from Prima Porta Antiquities, dated 15 April 2005, written and signed by Dr. Matthias Renz, and confirming the dating above, accompanies this lot. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and manufacturing flaws, such as firing cracks, glaze flaking and fine cracks, few light scratches, the base with two drilled holes from sample-taking. Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by Oxford Authentication on 28 February 2022, based on sample number C122c62, sets the firing date of two samples taken at between 1500 and 2400 years ago. A copy of the report, issued by Oxford Authentication, accompanies this lot. The three emerald-cut emeralds spaced by pairs of small old-cut diamonds on a scroll carved gallery to a 'D' section shank with hallmarks for Birmingham 1900, size P, 5.4g gross. Condition Report: Overall good condition for age and use. One claw with evidence of a later re-tip and a small repair to the "under gallery" No evidence of a resizing. Emaralds good mid green.
