A SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND RINGClaw set with the emerald cut sapphire to the centre, between baguette diamond set five stone ridged sides and with circular cut diamond set shoulders, (note: sizing beads to the band), ring size K, gross weight 3.4 gms, with a caseCondition Report: There is some wear to the facet edges of the sapphire. There is some wear to the sides of the mount. The claws are showing signs of wear. The size of the sapphire 7.3mm; 7.1mm. Depth of sapphire 4mm. The diamonds appear to be attractive clear white stones. Suggested age of the ring is 1920-1940. It is unlikley that the sapphire has been treated. The ring would benefit from careful professional cleaning. There are some surface reaching inclusions to one corner of the sapphire.

The emeralds are of medium colour saturation and generally have a few internal inclusions. The ring is in overall good condition and would benefit from cleaning. There are no chips to the gemstones.

13th-15th century AD. A gold finger ring with D-section hoop, floral designs in raised relief at the shoulders, 'pyramidal' bezel set with a dark green glass or emerald cabochon at the apex. Cf. Chadour, A.B., Rings. The Alice and Louis Koch Collection, volume I, Leeds, 1994, for comparable examples; cf. Portable Antiquities Scheme Database, KENT-5DD1D6, for a comparable ring. 2.00 grams, 23.82mm overall, 17.13mm internal diameter (approximate size British O, USA 7, Europe 14.98, Japan 14) (3/4"). Property of an English collector; acquired from John Moor, York, UK, in the late 1990s; accompanied by an independent specialist report and valuation by graduate gemmologist and jewellery expert Anna Rogers, GIA GG, BA, Gem-A, ref. no.168701/07/12/2020; this lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by AIAD certificate number no. 10463-168701. This form of finger ring rose to popularity in the middle of the 12th century and continued to be produced into the 15th century. 3rd century AD. A pair of gold earrings, each composed of a hook terminating in a gold plate with claws which clasp a polygonal emerald crystal. See Marshall, F.H., Catalogue of the Jewellery Greek, Etruscan & Roman in the Departments of Antiquities British Museum, Oxford, 1969, no.2638, for a comparative example of similarly earrings. 3.37 grams total, 18-21mm (3/4 - 1"). Property of a gentleman from Vienna; from his private collection formed since 1970. While gold was the most highly valued metal, emeralds were one of the most valued stones in antiquity. They were prized not only for their rich green colour and connections to fertility, but also for their perceived healing properties. According to Pliny the Elder, Roman jewellers would often sooth their strained eyes by looking at or through emeralds while they worked.
