1991 Nissan Figaro Transmission: automaticMileage:65649The Nissan Figaro is a front engine, front wheel drive, two door, 2+2 convertible manufactured for model year 1991, and marketed in Japan at Nissan Cherry Stores. Initially a production run of only 8,000 units was planned, however demand was exceedingly high and after two increases in production schedules a total of 20,073 Figaros were manufactured, all in right hand drive format as they were intended solely for the Japanese market. Even with the greatly increased production numbers, demand was so high that potential purchasers had to enter a lottery to win the chance to buy one. Based on the Nissan Micra K10 platform, the Figaro features a turbocharged 980cc engine, mated to a three-speed automatic gearbox. As a fixed profile convertible, the upper side elements of the Figaro's bodywork remain fixed, while its fabric soft top retracts in conjunction with a solid panel with a glass heated rear window. This retro classic is presented in Emerald Green, being one of only four colours in which they were produced. It has ivory coloured seats with contrasting piping, air conditioning, CD player, chrome and Bakelite-style knobs, soft-feel paint on the dashboard top, chrome-trimmed speedometer with smaller inset gauges for fuel and engine temperature; and chrome-trimmed tachometer with inset clock. This super little car from the Japanese manufacturer is offered to auction with a V5C registration document, various bills and receipts and a fresh MoT test certificate and offers fantastic open top summer fun. Consigned by Dominic Lake.

1959 Lambretta 150 Transmission: manualMileage:261Before World War II, Ferdinando Innocenti founded a successful engineering company making steel pipes and joints still used today for scaffolding and named it 'Tubi Innocenti'. Just after the war he saw the potential for an economic means of transport and created the Lambretta, so called because its factory was in the east suburb of Milan, Lambrate. Lambretta had a tubular frame, to which the body panels were fixed and the engine was a small single cylinder two stroker. In 1957, the Lambretta, which up to then was always grey, was enriched with a two-tone finish: the two rear lids, the front and the handlebar nacelle could be painted in Light Blue, Emerald Green, English Blue or Deep Red. The scooter we are offering comes somewhat reluctantly from Lady McAlpine who has fond memories of careering about the country behind her first love (whom she married) on an identical Lambretta, known as the Gremlin as it was constantly in need of attention.  This one has never caused trouble but has now been more or less on display for several years. Restored some years ago, it is painted in the attractive two-tone colours of blue and cream with matching seats. Powered by a two-stroke 150cc engine, this iconic and rare motorcycle would grace any collection or would look great as a 'prop' for a café or restaurant and although running and driving, may need some further recommissioning should you wish to use it on the road. Very chic and retro with charm to boot! Lady McAlpine is only parting with it because she feels it should be driven and she feels happier in a car these days. Consignor Mathew Priddy Guide Price £3,500-£4,000    *Interested parties should note that this Lambretta will require recommissioning and is currently not running

A JADEITE SNUFF BOTTLE DEPICTING A CARP TRANSFORMING INTO A DRAGON, CHINA, 1770-1850 1770-1850年翡翠鯉魚躍龍門鼻煙壺Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價Expert’s note: This bottle is perhaps one of the most exciting of all carved jadeite examples. The shape has a perfect formal integrity which is greatly enhanced by the tall, flared neck with a lipped rim. The carved decoration stands in unusually high relief and in the undulating rhythms of the dragon's back, shows a confident line of which an accomplished painter with a brush would be proud of. The entire composition, however, is truly brought to life by the exceptionally fine hollowing, which allows the light to be transmitted through the body, revealing the icy texture of the stone. This adds enormously to the energy of the piece, creating the appearance of a raging storm through which the dragons are scything unmoved. The fashion for extreme hollowing was probably inspired by the advent of Mughal jades into China in the 1750s and may have played some part in the conception of this bottle. However, most bottles of this ultra-hollowed group are uncarved and rely solely on their hollowing for their impact, whereas on the present bottle the hollowing actually adds to the impact of the carving.Of flattened globular form, exceptionally well hollowed, finely carved in high relief with a continuous scene depicting a carp emerging from the waves to transform into a dragon chasing a flaming pearl, with cloud billows on the shoulders. The well-polished translucent stone is of an apple-green hue with emerald-green patches, paler shadings, and icy inclusions.Provenance: Collection of Gerry P. Mack. Robert Kleiner & Co. Ltd., London, United Kingdom, 2010. Private collection in the United Kingdom, acquired from the above. A copy of the original invoice from Robert Kleiner & Co. Ltd., dated 30 June 2010, confirming the dating above, and stating a purchase price for this present lot of GBP 5,000 or approx. EUR 10,500 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompanies this lot. According to Robert Kleiner’s foreword to the catalog of his single owner sale at Christie's, he “was one of the great snuff bottle collectors of the twentieth century. The bottles for which Gerry had a weakness have stood the test of time and, more remarkably, of our increased knowledge of the subject. Gerry's achievement was to align on bottles which he liked and which are still highly sought after and in many cases among the finest of their type.” Condition: Superb condition with minor old wear and occasional light scratches. The stone with natural inclusions and fissures.Stopper: Agate with bronze collarWeight: 87 gDimensions: Height incl. stopper 74 mm, Diameter neck 22 mm and mouth 7 mm The depiction of a carp turning into a dragon alludes to the path of the scholar who must leap like a carp across the Longmen Falls in order to transform into a dragon, meaning to pass his examinations. Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 31 May 2015, lot 192 Price: HKD 150,000 or approx. The shoulders carved with beast mask handles suspending mock rings.Provenance: The VWS Collection, acquired by the previous owner’s father (1890-1977) in China during the 1930s and thence by descent within the family. The VWS collection tells the extraordinary story of a family fleeing the Tsarist Empire in Russia. Their journey began in 1903 as the Chinese Eastern Railway, the eastern branch of the Trans-Siberian Railway, was completed. Fleeing, like others, a climate of political persecution and anti-Semitism, the family settled in Harbin, the northernmost city in China and started to develop its businesses from 1906 onwards. Like many others, they were attracted to this cosmopolitan place, then a major economic and cultural center in Manchuria, because of its large Jewish community. In Harbin, the father, a cultured, open-minded and multilingual man, felt at home and his early successes in business earned him respect. By 1932, he and his family were forced to flee again, following the Japanese invasion of Manchuria, and found a new home in Shanghai. From there, his businesses took him to Hong Kong, North America, and other Asian countries, where the family would remain for many years. They began collecting art in China during the 1930s and these artworks have remained with the family heirs ever since.Condition: Very good condition with only minor wear and few tiny nicks.Stopper: Apple and emerald-green jadeite stopper Weight: 64.7 g Dimensions: Height including stopper 74 mm. A FAMILLE NOIRE ‘MAGPIE AND PRUNUS’ BRUSHPOT, BITONG, QING DYNASTY 清代墨地喜上眉梢筆筒Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價China, 18th - 19th century. Exquisitely painted in delicate tones of violet-blue, coral, and emerald green on a black ground, depicting an Oriental magpie perched on a flowering prunus tree, surrounded by peony blossoms, and with small butterflies fluttering about the composition.Provenance: From a private collection in Paris, France, Rue des Petites Écuries. Condition: Very good condition with some old wear and firing irregularities, rubbing to enamels, traces of use to the interior.Weight: 736.5 gDimensions: Diameter 10.4 cm, Height 12.8 cm Expert’s note:The present lot was certainly not created for export, as the concept of the Bitong was not common in the west during the later 19th century. It is one of the interesting study examples, where it is rather difficult to say if it was made during the Kangxi reign or later in the Qing period. Either way, the quality of the artwork is superb, and the enameling palette corresponds to the patterns described by Sullivan (see literature comparison below). The 19th century witnessed a ‘Famille Noire frenzy’ prompted by a surge of interest amongst the newly minted millionaires in England and America who vied with one another to acquire the best art to fill the enormous rooms of their grand estates. Famille Noire wares comprised many of the most expensive porcelains sold at the time, with some examples selling for tens of thousands of pounds. Clients and dealers, from John D. Rockefeller to J.P. Morgan, competed vigorously for fine examples, the intensity resulting in ruptured friendships and even legal battles. The issue of supply became paramount. Two elements facilitated the production in China in the 19th century. The first resulted from the political and social turmoil that defined China in the last years of the Qing dynasty. Commissions were disappearing for the potters of Jingdezhen and they certainly would have welcomed requests for Kangxi-style wares, including large-scale Famille Noire pieces. Secondly, black was the natal color of Empress Dowager Cixi (1835-1908), and it is reputed that the palace eunuchs added black grounds to some wares to please her (see Gerald Reihinger, Economics of Taste, volume 2, London, 1970, page 212).Both genuine Kangxi pieces, with bodies scraped and re-enameled, and entirely new wares were sold to the West as Kangxi period during that time, an attribution that was not seriously questioned until 1974 with John Alexander Pope’s catalog of the Frick Collections porcelains. Pope put forth a convincing argument about the Famille Noire wares, observing that most large-scale objects in the collection were late 19th century (see John Alexander Pope, The Frick Collection: An Illustrated Catalogue. Volume 7, Porcelains, Oriental and French, Washington, 1974, pp. 87-90).The pairing of prunus with magpie in Chinese culture sounds similar to the phrase ‘mei xi que’, which can be interpreted as ‘may happiness and joy arrive’. This association is often used in artistic imagery to symbolize the welcoming of spring and the renewal of the landscape. Tradition also holds that if a magpie lands near your house, it is a sign of good luck and positive opportunities approaching.Literature comparison: For a description of Kangxi-period famille noire wares that match the current lot, see Michael Sullivan, The Arts of China, 1977, p. 248. Sullivan discusses the “violet-blue” and “jewel-like green” hues of the Kangxi period famille noire enamels, and further talks about how the “black background” should be “almost iridescent” like “being washed over with a transparent green glaze”. Compare a related famille noire vase with a closely related violet-blue enamel, dated to the Kangxi period, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession number C.1310-1910.
