FRANÇOIS-ANTOINE BOSSUET (Ypres, Belgium, 1798-Brussels, 1889)."Road to the Alhambra, 1879.Oil on canvas.Signed and dated in the lower right corner.Size: 39 x 70 cm; 50 x 82 cm (frame).A worthy representative of the Romantic taste, François Bossuet produced a large number of paintings in Spain, especially in Seville and Granada. The particularity of Bossuet's work lies not simply in the precious and elaborate technique that characterises his pieces, but in the reinterpretation of landscapes, exalting them in sublime recreations. Here the majestic city of Granada is silhouetted in the distance, to which the rider is heading. A sweeping panorama of the Sierra Nevada unfolds in hills iridescent with ochre and emerald in the evening light.François-Antoine Bossuet, a painter known mainly for his depictions of the cities and landscapes of Italy and Spain, continued the tradition of the European Romantic painters and travellers who were fascinated by Spain. He visited various cities in Andalusia and its main monuments, such as the Alhambra in Granada. Among the Spanish cities that captivated Bossuet's heart were Zaragoza, Toledo and Cordoba. Bossuet is considered one of his country's most important painters of the 19th century, and was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels for more than twenty years between 1855 and 1876. His works, which are abundant and highly appreciated for their precision, accuracy of perspective and effects of light, can be seen in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp, in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels, in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and in numerous private collections, such as the Bellver collection in Seville.
