The individual rings could be divided between the betrothed couple and a close relative or friend before being reunited and presented as one ring during the wedding ceremony. The Claddagh ring is a traditional Irish ring which represents love in the form of the heart, loyalty in the form of the crown, and friendship in the form of the hands. The design and customs associated with it originated in the Irish fishing village of the same name in Galway. Claddagh rings were first produced in Ireland during the 17th century but the name, 'Claddagh ring', was not until the 1830s.
