Later 15th century AD. A D-section gold hoop with baluster to each shoulder, plaque with rosette motif, biconvex square bezel with ropework border, inset emerald cabochon. Cf. Chadour, A.B. Rings. The Alice and Louis Koch Collection, volume I, Leeds, 1994 item 631 for type. 8.67 grams, 27mm overall, 17.53mm internal diameter (approximate size British O, USA 7 Europe 14.98 Japan 14) (1"). From an important private London, SW1 jewellery collection collection; acquired in the 1990s. Dr Bonewitz notes: 'The high-dome cabochon emerald is a very rich green colour, and weight between three and four carats. It is highly probable that this stone originated in the Austrian Habatchtal deposit. The finest stones, such as this one, from this deposit were the earliest mined.' Extremely fine condition. Rare.
14th century AD. A flat-section narrow gold hoop with rosette to each shoulder, conical fluted bezel with piecrust rim, inset emerald cabochon. Cf. Chadour, A.B. Rings. The Alice and Louis Koch Collection, volume I, Leeds, 1994 item 566. Disclaimed under the Treasure Act, reference number 2015T930. Recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme with reference number KENT-ED5E39; accompanied by a print-out of the PAS report. 1.51 grams, 22mm overall, 17.91mm internal diameter (approximate size British P, USA 7 1/2 Europe 16.23 Japan 15) (1"). Found Sandwich, Kent, 2015. Fine condition, straightened.
3rd century AD. A gold chain necklace with hook-and-eye clasp, twenty four hexagonal-section emerald beads, two facetted crystal beads with filigree collars, an amethyst melon bead, two small triangular-section amethyst beads to the centre flanking a biconical granulated gold bead. [A video of this lot is available on the TimeLine Auctions website] Cf. Ruseva-Slokoska, L. Roman Jewellery, Sofia, 1991 item 103 for type. 18 grams, 39cm (15 1/4"). Property of a central London gentleman; previously with a London, Mayfair gallery in the early 1990s; formerly in a 1970s collection. Dr Bonewitz notes: 'These emeralds are almost certainly from Egypt, from the legendary 'Cleopatra's Mines'.' Very fine condition.
