John Bree of Keswick (1773-1830) Five views of the Lake District - including 'On the Derwent' and 'Grange in Borrowdale' two signed and dated '1816 J Bree' pen, sepia ink and wash on paper, one with watermark 'J Whatman 1815', unframed 25.5 x 36.5cm John Bree lived at Emerald Bank near the Village of Newlands on the west side of Derwentwater, a few miles out of Keswick. He was married to Eliza Barcroft at St Kentigern’s church in the parish of Crosthwaite, Keswick, on 3rd August 1805. He was inspired by the work of the ‘Lakes poets’, such as Coleridge, Wordsworth and Robert Southey. A couple of years after Bree's death, a collection of his own poems was published by his family under the title ‘Saint Herbert’s Isle: A legendary poem in five cantos – with some smaller pieces’ (1832, Longman et al., London). We are grateful to Michael Mead-Briggs for correcting the attribution of the present lot to John Bree and for his assistance with this catalogue entry.
