Lot 1461

A 1924 Bayliss Thomas 10/22 Reg No. SV7705Chassis No. 5263Engine No. 5240.Founded in Coventry in 1874, Bayliss Thomas & Co took its name from those of its two founders, and made bicycles and motorcycles under the 'Excelsior' brand name. Reconstituted in 1920 as the Excelsior Motor Co Ltd, by which time it had relocated to Tyseley Green, Birmingham, the firm introduced its first motor car in 1922, choosing to market it as a 'Bayliss-Thomas' to avoid any confusion with the Belgian Excelsior car. A wide variety of models were listed, all of good quality using conventional construction and making use of proprietary components. This car was an early example of the use of a Meadows 4EB engine and 3-speed gearbox. It is understood that Bayliss Thomas exported several cars of this period to Australia as rolling chassis to have coachwork fitted locally. The 4-seat tourer body is of a sturdy construction having the front seat back act as a brace across the body. The early Meadows 4EB engines are OHV units with in this instance a 1247cc capacity.Brought back to the UK in 1999 the car has had several enthusiast owners, the history file shows that the engine was fully rebuilt in 2010 with new pistons, bearings, head and block machining and much more totalling in excess of £2000.The car is finished in Cream with Black wings and nicely upholstered interior, a black hood and side screens are present. Was driven in.Engine was rebuilt approx. 10 years ago and has done approx. 6000 miles since.Semi-regularly driven by the current owner, who bought it from a friend 6 years ago.Bodywork sound but has blemished spots (poorly overpainted).Door hinges require some attention but are fully working. With side screens. All nickel plate is tarnished with age.Generally sound but with some wear consistent to age and use.

The car was powered by a Morris UB series 918cc four-cylinder side valve engine, producing maximum power of 23.5bhp. The gearbox is a three-speed unit with synchromesh on the top two speeds. The Morris 8 was well equipped with the driver being provided a full set of instruments including speedometer with a built-in odometer, oil pressure and gauges, and ammeter. In 1938, the car was updated to match the other cars in the Morris range; approximately 54,000 were produced in this year alone.

A 1973 Volvo P1800 ES Automatic Reg No. BDL41LChassis No. 3893Engine No. 765Gearbox No. 300559Body No. 3932Odometer 14680, Note Vendor states from UK import in 1973 to 1987 38,201, new speedo fitted and current reading is to present day, total mileage circa 52,900The Volvo P1800 ES was the last model manufactured in the P1800 series only being produced between 1972 and 1973. Effectively its design was a shooting-break derivation of the P1800 Coupe which was introduced in 1961 using the mechanical underpinnings of the Volvo Amazon/122 series. The P1800 was popularised by the 1962 British TV series “The Saint” starring Roger Moore. Our Volvo has been extensively restored using many well known model restorers, the simply outstanding result can only be described as just short of Concours condition. Finished in Ferrari Red with Black interior, Red carpeting, gleaming chrome, under bonnet detailing of superb quality. The vendor reports that over the years that this restoration has taken place over £25,000 has been spent. The 1986cc B20 engine starts and runs beautifully driving through a smooth changing Borg Warner 35 automatic gearbox. A period radio has been fitted but is not connected as the owner didn’t want to make unnecessary holes in the interior, he also advises that the HRW is not operating. A large file of restoration invoices come with the car. A 2003 Lotus Eleven replica by Ken Newson Reg No. TAS385Chassis No. SABTVR03463122280Engine No. FW2769Experienced engineer Ken Newson tragically suffered a rare brain tumour in 2001 as a result of which he went through a difficult period of rehabilitation. Ken had always loved the classic design of Colin Chapmans 1950’s Lotus Elevens and decided as part of his recuperation he would build a close as possible replica of his favourite car. Using copies of the chassis drawings he fabricated the replica spaceframe chassis. A Coventry Climax FW 1020cc engine was obtained and converted to run in the car mated to a BMC A series gearbox and rear axle. Other proprietary components similar to the originals were used to complete the running gear. Wherever possible, all components and finishes were done in order to replicate the original. This vehicle was first registered with the DVLA on the 13/06/2003 as an Historic Vehicle. Ken has finished this construction to the highest possible standards and we are informed that Lotus Eleven experts have praised his work. Ken is unable to drive on the public highway but has, since completion, been able to enjoy driving his car on closed circuits including Le Mans and Goodwood. With advancing age he no longer feels able to continue exercising his pride and joy and is seeking a new enthusiastic owner to take on his creation. The car is sold together with the single axle trailer as photographed. The car comes with a custom-built trailer which will require full service before use, and a full photographic record of its construction.

A 1957 AJS 16MS 350cc motorcycleRegistration No. YKO 527Chassis No. A50669Engine No. 30793Odometer 18708In blackThe AJS model 16 was a British motorcycle made by Associated Motorcycles at the former Matchless works in Plumstead, London. The rigid frame AJS model 16M 350cc single was developed in 1945 from the military Matchless G3/L WWII motorcycle, and remained in production selling large numbers to the civilian market well into the 1960s. This simple and practical model 16 requires minimal maintenance and was very economical, which was ideal during petrol rationing. In 1953 the model 16M was modernised with a dual seat replacing the saddle. In 1956 the gearbox with a new four-speed unit of AMC'S own design, and 1957 saw further improvements. The 348cc OHV air-cooled single cylinder engine produced a top speed of 78mph and 16bhp.This example is in good, fully running overall condition and has enjoyed regular but light use by our vendor.

After many years of production 1959 was the last year of the pre-units (separate engine/gearbox) and in 1960 it was completely redesigned in the new "unit" style as the T100A. A long line of T100s were produced throughout the 1960s, both for the UK and export markets. This example has been owned by our vendor for several years, and is in generally excellent condition. The mileage indicated on the odometer is 15,168 miles but reference to the MoT history suggests this is 115,168 miles, and the figure isn't warranted. The car will come with its DBR 152 private plate, which is valued at around £2000. There is a large and comprehensive paperwork file that comes with the TVR. It includes the V5C, owner's handbook, spare parts manual and many invoices plus other information relating to the car dating back to 2005 - including one bill for £3495 in 2019 for specialist repairs to the engine cylinder heads and gearbox plus new clutch master and slave cylinders. The result is that it is still in excellent, almost exceptional, condition inside and out; a real timewarp vehicle. The car has a fully-documented main dealer service history, being maintained by its supplying garage and having never failed an MoT - in 23 years, all have been passed with only the occasional minor advisories. The vendor believes this is reflected in how nicely it drives. The combination of a 2.5-litre V6 Eco-Tec engine and five-speed manual gearbox means this is now quite a rare vehicle on UK roads.

The Supercharger has been serviced and fitted with a new belt, the inlet manifold walnut blasted and fitted with new gaskets, the injectors have been bench tested and serviced with two new ones fitted at the same time. 1965 Rover P6 2000Make: Rover Model: P6 2000Year: 1965Mileage: 71879VIN: 40016907BConfiguration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: DTP280CTransmission: manualThis is an earlier Rover P6, having been registered June 1965, when the only engine option was the 2-litre unit, in this case with a manual gearbox. These earlier cars are known by some enthusiasts as 'Sharkstooths' due to their front valance design. The previous owner had the car for over 30 years and it was restored by him several years ago. The odometer currently shows 71,879 miles, with the car reported as being in good mechanical condition; the vendor tells us that the engine runs well and does not burn or leak oil, or overheat, with recent runs out in the car being 'free of any dramas, breakdowns or unexpected mechanical issues'. The P6 was driven 60 miles to the auction with no issues. The white bodywork is in very good condition and has an original red leather flatpleat interior, which is described as 'very good' - with the door seals, door cards, carpet and rubber mats all in fine order. Just before the vendor bought the car (earlier this year) the previous owner overhauled the rear brakes and fitted new pads - good news for any prospective owner, as these are inboard items, so trickier to work on than the more conventional front brakes. As an historic vehicle, the Rover is now MoT-exempt; its last certificate expired in January 2021 however. The online MoT history shows no serious issues back to 2006, which is when the online history ends. The vendor has only owned the car for a short while, and is now selling because his wife would prefer a more modern classic. The V5C shows four previous registered keepers, and there are copies of previous V5Cs, as well as MoT certificates back to 2001. There's also a handful of recent bills from 2022 for a Dunlop rear brake caliper seal kit, the brake pad set along with two owner's manuals, three workshop manuals and a period brochure. 1981 Ford Mustang Ghia Make: Contact AuctioneerModel: Contact AuctioneerYear: 0Mileage: 18189VIN: OFO4A269623Configuration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: Contact AucitoneerTransmission: Contact AuctioneerIt's believed that between six and eight manual gearbox third generation Ford Mustangs were converted to right-hand drive by Ford of Germany. This 2301cc four-cylinder 1981 model, registered in May of that year, was purchased by the vendor's father in February 1982. However, it was taken off the road circa 1992 and stored in a barn for the last 30 years, up until a month or so ago. It's now being sold as a restoration/recommissioning project with an indicated 18,189km on its odometer. There is no paperwork accompanying the car save for a three tax discs from 1990, 1991 and 1992. Thus a V5C will need to be applied for.

This 100hp variant (effectively the 'hot hatch' performance version of the second generation Panda) was registered in May 2010 and has an MoT until April 2023. The odometer reading is 100,169 miles and just one previous registered keeper is recorded. The paperwork file includes the V5C green slip only, the last 10 MoT certificates, a print-out of the online MoT summary back to 2013, and a service book with stamps up to 93,960 miles in October 2020. The book pack contains the owner's handbook, radio guide and UK and European dealership directory. There are also a number of invoices. These include ones for new rear shock absorbers in February 2015, a rebuilt gearbox and clutch (cost £800) at 57,464 miles in September 2017 and a new battery and alternator in May 2022 at 99,768 miles. 1974 Land Rover 88 Series III"Make: Land Rover Model: 88"Year: 1974Mileage: 14316VIN: 92100591AConfiguration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: YNK935MTransmission: manualThis 2286cc petrol Land Rover 88" Series III County seven-seater was registered in July 1974 and has had just one previous keeper registered from new. Its MoT is valid until November 2022 and 14,316 miles are showing on the odometer. The Series III is in presents extremely well throughout, especially for a Land Rover, as these often wear the scars of any off-road use. The paperwork file includes the V5C, current MoT certificate, Pioneer cassette player manual and owner's handbook. There's also an inspection report from independent Land Rover specialist Heritage 4x4 of Manea, Cambridgeshire. This confirms that the Land Rover has been with the same family now for 48 years and all numbers - engine, gearbox/transfer box, front and rear differentials - match. The Series III has received some drivability, maintenance and safety improvements such as structural modifications to the steering and column; a hydraulic cylinder and power steering have been fitted using parts from a Range Rover Classic. The front crossmember has been replaced by one from a Defender. The fuel tank and radiator have been replaced and the vehicle is fitted with a Fairey overdrive system and power braking, and is currently on parabolic springs. It has apparently been garaged at the family home throughout its life. Heritage 4x4's opinion is that the Series III 'does not require any other work and can be driven from the get-go'.

The half leather and houndstooth check interior is described as being in superb overall condition First registered in the UK in 1985, it was shipped by the owner to Malta in 1993 where, it is understood, it remained in storage for most of the time before returning to the UK in 2018. There is a book pack present but sadly the service history book is missing. Mercedes- Benz UK has been contacted to try and trace the original history but the current system does not cover that far back so the search came to a halt. However, looking at the car the vendor strongly suspects the mileage shown is correct. PLEASE SEE BELOW FOR VIDEO PRODUCED 6TH JUNE BY ACA OF THIS CAR.

1968 MG B 4.6 V8 RoadsterMake: MGModel: B Roadster Year: 1968Mileage: 58188VIN: GHN3128679Configuration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: LDE807FTransmission: manualThis modified 1968 MGB Roadster now sports an Interpro 4.6-litre V8 engine mated to a Land Rover Discovery gearbox. The car was initially converted to 3.5-litre Rover V8 power in 1993, before being fitted with the current (bottom end) 4.6 V8 engine in 2010, with a rebuilt four-pot Holley carburettor, Hoffenhauser inlet manifold, ported and polished MGB V8 heads, fast road camshaft, remote oil filter, and oil cooler. In addition, there are RV8 manifolds through the inner wings and a stainless steel exhaust. The back axle driveshafts are from an MGB GT V8. A Quaife LSD is fitted, as are welded-in anti-tramp bars. Suspension is lowered with parabolic springs, adjustable Spax dampers, coilover springs, front anti-roll bar bars and negative camber wishbones. There's also a new central alloy fuel tank, Mallory electronic ignition, V8 alloy radiator, Revotec electric fan. The R380 five-speed gearbox was rebuilt by Ashcroft Transmissions in 2016 and the same year, a new paddle clutch was fitted. The brakes have been upgraded to MGB V8 items with vented and grooved discs and Greenstuff pads. The dark blue car has a new interior and double duck hood professionally fitted, with leather seats and a Mota-Lita steering wheel. The Minilite alloy wheels have been refurbished and fitted with Toyo Proxes 195/60-14 tyres. The bonnet comes from an MG RV8. The recorded keeper has owned the car since 2000 and apparently changed the oil every 3000 miles, looking after the car very well in general. He tells us that the car is 'very fast, very reliable and drivable with good, predictable handling' and has been used for regular long trips. There's lots of history including the V5C, many bills totalling thousands of pounds for the work done, MoT certificates etc, plus a print-out showing the output from the 4.6-litre V8 as 351bhp at 5546rpm. The car was registered in January 1968 and is MoT'd until April 2022. 58,188 miles are indicated on the odometer.

1968 Fiat 124 Spider LHD Make: FiatModel: 124 SpiderYear: 1968Mileage: 7224VIN: 4568Configuration: Left Hand DriveRegistration: WGU471FTransmission: ManaulThis 1968 Fiat 124 Spider is in very good condition throughout, having been restored in Italy and then imported to the UK in May 2017. The vendor describes the car, with Rosso Corsa paintwork and black interior, as being rust-free. A new hood and exhaust are recent fitments; the car is also fitted with a later bonnet and rear lights as the originals are almost impossible to source. The vendor tells us that the car is mechanically sound and drives very well. Its odometer shows 7224km. As far as is known, the 1438cc engine is the original, although it has been fitted with a 1608cc head, presumably to improve performance. The gearbox has been replaced by a later type, at some point during the car's life. The Spider is a rare European spec first series car, not a US import, fitted with excellent order Cromodora alloy wheels shod with period-correct Michelin tyres. The vendor bought the car at auction two years ago and has maintained and improved it during his ownership. He feels he now needs someone to use it more than he does. The car comes with its V5C, a photocopy of the owner's manual (albeit in Italian), parts catalogues, letter from Fiat confirming build date, and various photos of the car. There are MoT certificates from 2017 and 2018; there is no current MoT as the Fiat is now an historic vehicle and thus no longer requires annual testing. Its last ticket expired in June 2019. 1961 Morgan Plus 4 Make: Morgan Model: Plus 4 Year: 1961Mileage: 16963VIN: 4876Configuration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: 852UYXTransmission: manualAlthough manufactured in 1961 (and thus fitted with the 2138cc Triumph TR4 engine), this Morgan Plus 4 was originally shipped to the USA used and registered abroad, receiving its British registration in October 2017. Since then it has had just one owner, the vendor. He bought it in 2016 and restored it from 2016 through to 2018, at a cost of £21,759. Most of these bills are in the paperwork folder, as is a Morgan chassis record (showing the car was originally Light Grey with red leather upholstery). The mileage shown on the odometer is 16,963 miles. The history file also includes the V5C, photos of the car during its restoration, and recent MoT certificates - although, as a 1961 car, the Morgan is now MoT-exempt, with its last one expiring in October 2018. There's also books on 'Morgan: The Cars and the Factory' by John Tipler, 'Original Morgan 4/4, Plus 4 and Plus 8' by John Worrall and Liz Turner and 'Morgan Cars 1960-1970' by Vic Berris plus a Brooklands' Morgan Four Owners' Workshop Manual and Buying Portfolio and a 1964 'Small Car' magazine and 2017 'Classic Motoring' magazine featuring Morgan articles. Thanks to its recent restoration, the Morgan is in very good condition throughout. However, the engine, gearbox (Moss four-speed) and rear axle numbers all still match the Morgan Motor Company certificate, which indicates they are original items. The two bonnet halves are also matching, as supported by the numbers stamped onto each half - something that should impress all enthusiasts who prize originality. Five former registered keepers are noted and the car is showing 13,194 miles on its odometer, although this isn't warranted. The recent recommissioning work undertaken in March of 2022 includes rebuilding the brake master cylinder, replacing both front calipers, new front and rear brake hoses, the handbrake linkage stripped, cleaned and greased, the rear wheel cylinders stripped and inspected (but not replaced, as they had only recently been fitted) and the DOT4 fluid replaced. Regarding the fuel system, the petrol tank was removed and chemically cleaned, all fuel lines replaced, and fuel filters added. The engine was serviced with new oil and filter plus a new air filter, points, condenser distributor cap, rotor arm and HT leads.

2002 Bentley Arnage Red LabelMake: Bentley Model: Arnage Red Label Year: 2002Mileage: 49000VIN: SCBLC31E31CH06403Configuration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: AM51UBSTransmission: automatic When the Bentley Arnage was launched in 1998, it came with a BMW M62 V8 engine and Cosworth-engineered twin-turbo installation. However, because of the takeover battle between BMW and Volkswagen for ownership of Rolls Royce and Bentley Motors, BMW threatened to stop supplying engines. Thus the Arnage was re-engineered to take the traditional old Rolls-Royce 6.75-litre 16-valve engine from the Turbo R, along with its four-speed automatic gearbox. The resultant car was known as the Bentley Arnage Red Label, with the BMW-powered variant being dubbed the Green Label. This Red Label car was registered in January 2002 and has had just two former registered keepers from new - with the last owning the car from July 2008. It has an MoT valid until March 2023, with its odometer showing circa 49,000 miles. This can be warranted from the history folder.

Being a higher spec executive Rover, the car features a high standard of equipment such as twin electric seats, sunroof and CD changer (all of which are working). It was given two new (factory) wings and a replacement door. A replacement sill was specially fabricated. After that, the car was resprayed after being stripped and corrosion-treated.
