Lot 562

1966 BSA C15G, 250cc. Registration number LDA 2D. Frame number painted over. Engine number C15G 171. Sold with the V5C and a key. In September 1958 BSA introduced a new ‘250’ that would provide the basis for an entire range of singles in capacities up to 500cc. This newcomer, the C15, featured a compact overhead-valve engine and unitary four-speed gearbox. Alternator electrics and coil ignition were features, early models being distinguished by a distributor-type points housing. The engine/gearbox unit was housed in a conventional cradle frame with bolt-on rear subframe. The C15G was produced from 1966 to 1967 and was the last version of the C15 engine with the ball bearing timing side main bearing, roller drive side and strengthened crankcases, larger oil pump and needle roller gearbox layshaft bearings. LDA is an older restoration that presents very well. Owned by our deceased vendor for several years it will require light recommissioning before use. Sold with the V5C and a key.

Lot 461

Property of a deceased's estate1960 BSA 649cc A10Registration no. VFU 422Frame no. GA7.6199Engine no. DA10 10213A new '650' twin joined BSA's 500cc A7 model in 1949. The existing parallel twin architecture was retained for the new A10, with 360-degree crankshaft and single camshaft at the rear of the cylinder block, as was the four-speed gearbox bolted directly to the crankcase in a form of semi-unitary construction. Like the A7, the A10 was available initially with either a rigid frame or plunger rear suspension. Named 'Golden Flash', the new 650 was strikingly finished in pale beige metallic. Ever since the model's introduction enthusiasts have commonly referred to the touring A10 as the 'Golden Flash', even when it was finished in alternative colour schemes, as seen here.BSA's rugged 650cc twin had undergone considerable development by the end of the 1950s. On the cycle parts front, the introduction of a swinging-arm frame in 1954 had resulted in the original bolt-up gearbox's replacement by a conventional separate item, while the engine had benefited from numerous improvements including an increase in compression ratio for 1958 and the standardisation of the sports models' high-lift camshaft for 1959. The current vendor's late father acquired this A10 in 2019. A self-employed gas turbine engineer. Motorcycles were his passion and had been from a young age. Sadly, no other history is known about this A10. Following a period of inactivity, the machine will require recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Offered with a current V5C.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 465

Property of a deceased's estate1929 Harley-Davidson 45ci Model DRegistration no. BF 8437Frame no. 29D6777 (on plate)Engine no. 29D6777• Iconic Harley-Davidson model• Acquired in 2018• Corbin speedometerAlthough Harley-Davidson was no stranger to sidevalve ('flat head') engines, it did not apply this valve gear arrangement to a v-twin until the arrival of the all-new 45ci 'D' (standard) and 'DL' (high-compression) models in 1929. With the introduction of the Powerplus model in 1916, rivals Indian had demonstrated that a properly designed 'flat head' could produce all the power a road rider required, so it is perhaps surprising that Harley took so long to follow suit. One of the other advantages of this new engine was that it was cheaper to produce, enabling Harley to price the new 45ci (750cc) Model D at $290, and the 45's relative affordability would prove to be an important factor during the Depression years of the early 1930s. Production of the 45 really took off when the USA's entry into WW2 in December 1941 created an unprecedented demand for military motorcycles; around 90,000 of the WL (military) version rolling off the Milwaukee production lines before hostilities ceased. 'De-mobbed' Harley 45s helped meet the upsurge in demand for motorcycles in the immediate post-war years, doing much to establish the marque's reputation worldwide, while the civilian version remained a catalogued model until the end of 1951. This Vintage-era Model D was acquired by the current vendor's late father in 2018. A self-employed gas turbine engineer. Motorcycles were his passion and had been from a young age. He loved the look of this Model D, so much so, it stood proudly in the hallway. This Harley previously belonged to a Mr Nicholas Julian Moss of Berkshire. Following a period of inactivity, the machine will require recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Property of a deceased's estate1961 BSA 650cc A10 Golden FlashRegistration no. 187 XVEFrame no. GA7. 17578 (see text)Engine no. DA10R 2775A new 650cc twin joined BSA's 500cc A7 model in 1949, the latter's engine being revised along the lines of the new design at the same time. The existing parallel twin architecture was retained for the new A10, with 360-degree crankshaft and single camshaft at the rear of the cylinder block, as was the four-speed gearbox bolted directly to the crankcase in a form of semi-unit construction, and the tele-fork-and-plunger cycle parts. Named 'Golden Flash', the new 650 was strikingly finished in pale beige metallic. The model was up-dated with swinging-arm frame and separate gearbox for 1955 and continued in production until 1962.Restored by the late vendor during 2018/2019, this example is fitted with a Golden Flash frame from 1961 and a Super Rocket engine from 1960. It should be noted the frame number has been restamped. Having been sat for some time since the late vendors passing, it will need recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent before returning to the road. Accomppanying documentation includes a V5C, BSA dating letter, invoices and BSA Twin restoration book by Roy Bacon.Key not requiredFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1931 Matchless 1,000cc Model X/3Frame no. 1623Engine no. X3 2861• Present ownership for five years• Restored in Australia• Recommissioning required following storageDesignated 'X/2' on its launch in 1925, the 982cc sidevalve v-twin from Matchless would remain in production until the outbreak of WW2, its engine being supplied to Brough Superior for use in the SS80 from 1935 onwards. While lesser models came and went, the stately Model X remained a fixture of the range, progressively updated, until 1940. The most significant upgrades along the way were introduced for 1937 when the Model X adopted a shorter frame, restyled fuel tank, and front-mounted magneto. The current vendor purchased this Model X five years ago from a Mr Corey Palmer of Roxby Downs, South Australia, whose father (since deceased) purchased the machine in Papua New Guinea from a university professor in PNG. A Service Garage (Gravesend) supplier's plaque on the front mudguard shows that the machine was sold new in the UK. When Corey's father died the Matchless made its way to Australia, and the Import Approval document dated 28th February 2007 is on file. A 'ground upwards' restoration then commenced, beginning with the frame being sent for sand blasting and painting. Other works included the wheels being stripped; the rims chrome plated and rebuilt with stainless steel spokes; and the tank and several other items sent for chrome plating. The engine was sent to sidevalve specialist Jak Guyomer for a full and complete overhaul. (Jak does the Vintage and Veteran engines for Brisbane's largest restorer, Sleeping Beauties.) The engine has new pistons, valves, bearings and too many other new parts to list. The latter include the camshaft and one flywheel, which had to be made using a CNC lathe (the cost of these two items was around AU$4,000). The Sturmer Archer gearbox has new bearings, also a new end-housing and fabricated steel support for the kick start. The generator and magneto have been overhauled; the instruments refurbished, including an 'Oil Sight Gauge' which is very rare; and the electrics rewired using period-correct braided cable. There is a short video showing images of the restoration on file (available to view at request). The machine will require checking over and recommissioning following a period of storage and inactivity, and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Associated documents include copies of the purchase receipt and the aforementioned import approval.Footnotes:Please note that this vehicle is from outside the UK. The Anthony R. East Classic Motorcycle Collection1956 Triumph 149cc TerrierRegistration no. SVC 665Frame no. T22005TEngine no. T15 22005In 1952 Triumph re-entered the market for lightweight commuter machines with the introduction of the 149cc Terrier, which stood out from the predominantly two-stroke opposition by virtue of being a four-stroke like the firm's larger models. A simple, compact, unitary construction single incorporating a four-speed gearbox, the Terrier power unit went into a plunger-suspended frame while the model borrowed many styling cues from the bigger Triumphs. Deliveries commenced in August 1953. In 1954 the Terrier was joined by an enlarged version - the 200cc Tiger Cub - and continued in production alongside its bigger brother until August 1956. This Terrier comes with its original buff logbook showing that it was first registered to Motor Sales (Birmingham) on 10th August 1956. The first three owners were all residents of Coventry, while the last listed is a Mr Stuart Kapes of Nuneaton (change undated). Purchased by Tony East in November 1996 and fully restored for him by Bryan Small, the Terrier was a class winner at the Louis Vuitton Concours in 2002 and comes with a 'Louis Vuitton Classic Concours' trophy and sign. The machine also comes with an old-style V5C; an original parts catalogue and instruction manual; and a quantity of bills totalling £5,088 relating to its restoration by Bryan Small. Last taxed to 30th April 2003, the Terrier currently displays a total of 25 miles on the odometer. The Anthony R. East Classic Motorcycle Collection1959 Norton 348cc Model 50Registration no. 545 KPDFrame no. P13 81793Engine no. 81793 P13Introduced in 1933, the single-cylinder Model 50 was Norton's first production overhead-valve machine in the 350 class; the 50 and its twin-port brother the 55 being junior versions of the 490cc Models 18 and 20 respectively. The new 350s were fitted with the four-speed Sturmey Archer gearbox that was adopted for all ohv Nortons that year. A hand gear-change was standard, with foot change an optional extra. The Sturmey Archer 'box, though, was destined for a relatively short life, being replaced by Norton's own four-speed foot-change unit for 1935. Norton's sporting 350 single was built in several versions and continuously developed during a production run lasting until 1963, post-war innovations including the adoption of the AMC gearbox in 1956 and a switch to superior alternator electrics and the peerless 'Featherbed' frame for 1959. Purchased by Tony East from a Mr Dobbs of Guildford in February 1991, this 'Featherbed' Model 50 was fully restored for Tony by Bryan Small, and after completion featured in The Classic MotorCycle magazine's November 1992 edition (framed display board available). The machine also comes with old/current V5C documents; three original maintenance manuals; a BMS photocopy workshop manual; Bryan Small's restoration invoice totalling £5,767; and a quantity of MoTs issued between August 1986 at 26,712 miles and May 2002 at 27,656 miles, an increase of only 944 miles in 16 years (current mileage 27,811 miles). KX05 OVWFrame no. *5HD4CJM105K448002*Engine no. *CJM5448002*In 1982 Harley-Davidson introduced a new welded frame, replacing the traditional lugged type in use hitherto, and then the following year saw the introduction of two new Sportsters: the XLX and XR-1000, the former being a more affordable base model intended to attract new customers. In 1986 Harley-Davidson's new all-alloy Evolution engine became available in the ever-popular Sportster, the model having recently been up-graded with Harley's diaphragm clutch, alternator electrics and five-speed gearbox. The new Sportster was initially offered in 883cc and 1,100cc sizes, the latter being opened out to 1,200cc for 1988.This lovely example was purchased new by the late vendor from Silverstone Harley-Davidson and displays a current mileage of 12,494. Fitted with the factory colour of Sierra Red Pearl and a laced rear wheel, this Sportster hasn't been used in the last few years so will need recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent before use. Property of a deceased estate1939 BSA 249cc B21 De Luxe (see text)Registration no. HUA 584Frame no. KB21 819 (see text)Engine no. KB21.845During the 1930s BSA concentrated on producing a range of dependable, well-made, competitively priced motorcycles. When BSA's single-cylinder range was redesigned by Val Page for 1937, the engines took on many of the characteristics they would retain in the post-war era, most notably dry-sump lubrication and gear drive to a rear-mounted magneto. There were three new offerings in the 250 class: the sidevalve B20 and overhead-valve B21 and Empire Star models, the latter featuring foot change as standard on the four-speed gearbox shared with the others. Production of the popular B-Series 250s continued to the decade's end when the range was superseded by the new C-Series quarter-litre models: the C10 and C11. Its late owner purchased this restored B21 in 2017 but did little with it. Kept in dry storage, the machine is nicely presented, albeit with some loss of paint from the fuel tank. It should be noted that the frame number have been re-stamped. Furthermore, the frame number ('KB21 819') is not correct for a 1939 B21: it should be prefixed either 'KB20' (De Luxe) or 'KJB20' (Standard) and thus it has not proved possible to identify this model with certainty. Accordingly, prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's authenticity prior to bidding. Key not required.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1964 Triumph 649cc T120 BonnevilleRegistration no. PRX 265BFrame no. T120DU 10409Engine no. T120DU 10409 RS (see text)Capitalising on its record-breaking success at the Utah salt flats, Triumph introduced a new twin-carburettor sports roadster in September 1958: the Bonneville. Unitary construction of engine and gearbox was already a feature of the 350 and 500 twins though, and this innovation duly appeared on the 650s in 1963. This collectible T120 Bonneville dates from 1964, by which time most of the handling problems associated with the earlier versions' twin down-tube frame had been rectified by the successor's single-tube design. This nice example was purchased by the vendor in May 1981. Imported and first registered in the UK in June 1976 it now displays a period correct 'B' number plate denoting its 1964 vintage. Last taxed for the road in 2018 the motorcycle will require recommissioning. The history file contains various old style V5's and a receipt for servicing work in the early 1990s. It should be noted, the engine is a post-1969 production replacement unit, with a non-factory stamp to match the frame number.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The John Hobbs Collection1909 FN 247cc Single ProjectRegistration no. SV 8244Frame no. 31228Engine no. 1526Like BSA, La Fabrique Nationale d'Armes de Guerre ('FN' for short) began as a munitions manufacturer, turning to the production of motorcycles around 1900. Today the Belgian company is best known for its sensational four-cylinder models, the first of which appeared in 1904. In 1900 the firm's first powered two-wheeler had been produced by mounting a clip-on engine in a bicycle frame, and in December the following year the first production model arrived, powered by a 133cc single-cylinder engine. FN's single-cylinder models evolved gradually, growing in size firstly to 188cc before arriving at 285cc in 1913, by which the atmospheric inlet valve had given way to a mechanically operated one. Variable-pulley transmission had been introduced on the belt-driven singles in 1907 but would be superseded by shaft drive in 1910, its introduction coinciding with that of the two-speed gearbox. The FN project offered here is an older restoration that was last taxed in 2015, and is offered with a selection of detached components including engine, magneto and other sundry items. Little is known about this particular example however, the accompanying current/old V5C's suggest John acquired the machine around 2004, previously owned by a Kenneth Woodward of Sturminster Newton, who acquired the machine around 2000. Requiring restoration to a greater or lesser extent, prospective bidders must satisfy themselves as to the condition, completeness, correctness, date and suitability of the machine's component parts prior to bidding.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1968 Triumph 649cc T120R BonnevilleRegistration no. WSU 324FFrame no. T120R DU85136 (see text)Engine no. T120R DU85136As the 1960s dawned, unitary construction of engine and gearbox was already a feature of Triumph's 350 and 500 twins, and that innovation duly appeared on the 650s in 1963. The café racer's favourite since its launch, thanks to lusty acceleration and a top speed approaching 120mph, the Bonneville continued in this new form as Triumph's top-of-the-range sports roadster, arriving at what aficionados consider its ultimate specification with the launch of the 1968 model. By this time the frame had been sorted and 12-volt electrics standardised, while welcome improvements included shuttle-valve fork internals; independently adjustable ignition points; Amal Concentric carburettors; and a long overdue twin-leading-shoe front brake. For the next couple of seasons the Bonnie continued essentially unchanged, before the disastrous launch of the Umberslade Hall-designed 'oil-in-frame' models in November 1970 precipitated the collapse of the entire BSA-Triumph Group. Belonging to the last Bonneville generation built before BSA-Triumph switched to the oil-in-frame range, this restored example was purchased by the lady vendor's late husband from Union Road Moto-Velo of Crediton on 25th April 2018 (sales receipt on file). The Bonnie was last used in 2018 and has been stored since then; recommissioning will be required before further use, while cleaning and polishing should reward the new owner with a very tidy machine. Accompanying paperwork consists of sundry bills and old/current V5C documents. We recommend that prospective bidders pay close attention to the frame number on this machine and satisfy themselves as to the originality of the stamping.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1972 Norton 745cc Commando RoadsterRegistration no. JMA 208KFrame no. 204114Engine no. 204114The Commando's vibration-beating Isolastic frame enabled Norton Villiers successfully to prolong the life of their ageing parallel twin. Launched in 1967, with production commencing in 1968, the Commando used the preceding Featherbed-framed Atlas model's 750cc engine and AMC gearbox, and was an instant hit with the motorcycling public, being voted Motor Cycle News 'Machine of the Year' for five consecutive years. It might have been a little down in top speed compared to rivals such as BSA-Triumph's 750cc triples and Honda's CB750 four, but the Commando more than made up for this minor deficiency with superior mid-range torque and steadier handling. New variations on the basic theme soon appeared, commencing in 1969 with the addition of the more sporting, though conventionally styled, 'S' version, complete with high-level exhausts. This was followed in 1970 by the Roadster, which was basically the 'S' with a low-level exhaust system.A symbol of timeless style and British engineering excellence, this matching numbers Commando is believed to have been imported from the US. It underwent a thorough restoration and upgrade around 2012 by the previous owner, who installed a two-into-one high-level exhaust, a single carburettor, RGM disc brake, and Boyer electronic ignition. It is believed to have last been run c.2016 and is described as being in generally good overall condition, although there are some visible signs of wear. It will require recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent prior to returning to the road. The machine comes with an extensive history file that includes a large quantity of restoration invoices, MOT's, handbook, V5, old-style V5C, V5C and handbook.4 keysFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
