A Victorian Lancashire Volunteer 1827 pattern rifles officers sword, with Masonic interest (no scabbard). Slightly curved single edged blade, with flattened spine, and fuller running approximately three quarters the length of the blade. Profusely etched to both sides, with one side having the Queen Victoria crown and VR monogram, plus the strung bugle and ‘6th Lancashire Rifle Vounteers‘ to the other side. Further etched to the blade is ‘Strangeways Lodge 1219’, and ‘Presented by Brother Simeon Sampson 1868’. Inset brass proof button also at the ricasso, which has the usual ‘proved’ and a fleur de lis symbol, which may relate to Charles Reeves. Steel half basket guard, with Queen Victoria crown and strung bugle. Fish skin grip bound with twisted copper wire. Notes: according to the census returns, there was a Simeon Sampson residing in the area in 1871 (with his profession listed as ‘Auctioneer’), and gives his birth year as circa 1833, though it’s uncertain if this is the man named on the sword asa having presented it. Approximately 95.5cm length, blade length approximately 82cm. Condition: generally good. Quite a clean and bright blade, with just a little darkening to the steel in places. Etched decoration a little worn in places from age and service wear, but is on the whole quite legible. Fish skin grip and wire binding intact, and just showing normal service wear. Hilt intact, with just a little surface darkening in places. Scabbard absent.
