AN OTHER RANKS 1812-1816 SHAKO. The majority of which appears to be of the period, of stiffened black felt and bearing a die-stamped brass plate with central 'GR' cypher, this attached with wire through three points, the wire on two of these points is modern. The plate is also retained via a heavily rusted wire passing through the usual loop fasteners. Wear to the false front exposes a wire stiffener; the peak is bound and therefore not of the period. The one inch black braid binding around the base of the shako appears to be original. The green cord festoons are of the right gauge though show no signs of wear. The black braid cockade has a central mount of a tiny strung bugle horn, very much of the period. A short red over white cock's feather plume. Sweat band missing, the lining of stiffened paper, a pasted in printed label, states, 'Catalogue Of The Late Sergeant-Major Cotton's Waterloo Library & Museum'. There is also a period stiffened paper hand-written label attached to the festoons, 'British Infantry ??????? Shako from Hougamont. E. Cotton', damage to the false front, mothing to the crown, some restitching.
