After the war ended, he returned to Germany as part of the Control Commission Germany. Keates was a volunteer sportsmen who used to hunt during his free time. During one of his hunting trips he met the Forstmeister of Hogsdorf, a tiny village near Lutjenburg. At this time German civilians were not allowed to own or carry a gun. However the two became close friends and the German would assist Mr Keates in hunts and teach him how to track animals etc. When the new German Government took control of Germany, Mr Keates was released from his duties, before he left for England he went out on one last hunting trip with his now close friend. When he arrived at the friends house, he was greeted by his friend in full ceremonial attire. Once they finished the hunt, a special ceremony was held and Mr Keates was made a Jagermeister (Master of the Hunt) the highest rank in the hunting organisation at the time. During the ceremony, Keates was presented with this silver bugle. He found out then that his friend was the Jagermeister for Hermann Goring in the area and this bugle was used by Hermann Goring when on hunts in the area. He was told that Goring had three of these bugles, one for an area North East of Berlin, one for South of Hamburg and this one for the district of Schleswig-Holstein. The hunting horn comes with a full typed history of the event of the presentation and his history, also with copies of photographs of the two men.
