Knight of the Shire for the County of Hereford, proprietor of the Remains, this Profpect is gratefully inscribed by his most obligd humble servts -Saml & Nathl Buck-This Priory or as ye Welsh call it Shandevi Nanthodeny from an ancient little chapple which stood here on ye River Hodeny. The solitariness of this place made St. David build here his little Hermitage in which we do not find any succeeded him, till about ye year 1103. William a knight of ye family of Hugh de Lacy retir`d to an austere life alone in it, but at length Ernesius Chaplain to I.Maud became his companion and were both of them remarkable for their simplicity of Manners and Sanctity, which made Hugh de Lacy offer them many large gifts; all of which they refus`d except enough to build them a small ordinary church wch was dedicated to St. John Baptist An.1108. In procefs of time Ernesius by ye advice of Anselm Ach. Bp. of Canterbury perswaded Wm. to accept of some of those generous offers & form a Convent which was done, & they chose ye order of Canons regular of St. Austin - An. Val. £99=19=0``. S.& N. (34 x 24.5cm.) * The car pictured is possibly an Austin 850, as raced by Bert Hadley against Bira, in a Maserati 8CM, in the Crystal Palace 15 lap 30 mile race on 14th August 1937. Hadley finished 1st and Bira 2nd on the day.
