[MATAGORDA PROPRIETORS]. Partly printed document accomplished in manuscript. A land deed signed by two of the proprietors, both Old Three Hundreds, Ira Ingram and Elias Wightman. [San Felipe de Austin: Printed by G.B. Cotten, 1830 or early 1831].  1 page, oblong 8vo, annotated verso, lightly browned, old creasing, a few tiny chips. Provenance: Acquired Dorothy Sloan (11 December 2009, Sale 22, lot 383).   "Town of Matagorda, April 4th, 1831. This Certifies, That, at the sale of In and Out-Lots in said town, held on the date hereof"”Daniel D.D. Baker became the highest bidder for Lots No. 5 & 6, in Block No. 2 & Tier No. 4 in the Colorado front of said town"¦". Ingram, the first alcalde of Matagorda, and Wightman, surveyor and partner of Stephen F. Austin in the founding of Matagorda, signed the original deed, as did Daniel D. D. Baker, who attempted to found the town of Preston on the lot.   Ownership records the transfer of one lot to Hamilton Cook, who was from an Old Three Hundred family.   FIRST PRINTING of a broadside relating to early printing in Texas. According to Streeter (locating only one copy): This certificate is in effect a form for a deed. It and the entry No. 18.2 were not available for [earlier] inclusion with the other early forms. Mr. John C. Wyllie, Librarian of the University of Virginia and a recognized authority on type, has examined the photostats of these two forms for me and reports that they were undoubtedly printed on the press Godwin B. Cotten had set up at San Felipe in the fall of 1829. The date of printing was probably 1830 or early 1831. From the manuscript records, formerly in my collection and now at Yale, of meetings of 'Proprietors of the town of Matagorda' held on August 1 and 2, 1830, and on January 28, 1831, it appears (records of the January 28, 1831, meeting) that Stephen F. Austin held a quarter interest or two shares in the partnership or association known as 'Proprietors of the town of Matagorda,' and Ira Ingram a three-eighths interest, with Seth Ingram, H.H. League, and Elias Wightman each holding a one-eighth interest, and that what is referred to in the Minutes as the 'constitution' of the Proprietors was adopted on July 8, 1830. ...The 'Out' lots of the 'In and Out' lots referred to in the certificate were the lots not included in the laid-out blocks making up the center of the town" (Streeter Texas 18.1).  Property from the Collection of Dr. Brant MittlerFor condition inquiries please contact lesliewinter@hindmanauctions.com

[MOSER, Barry, illustrator]. The Holy Bible. Containing All the Books of the Old and New Testaments. North Hatfield, MA and New York City: Pennyroyal Caxton Press, 1999.  2 volumes. Folio. Illustrated with over 235 relief engravings by Barry Moser.   (Front flyleaf creased in Vol. I.)   Vol. I partially bound, sewn onto original vellum strips with linen and spine backing paper present; Vol. II in full vellum over boards with title stamped in gilt on front board and spine (slight discoloration to vellum on front cover); each volume housed in original cloth folding case (both with spine labels for Vol. II).    LIMITED EDITION, one of 400 copies on Zerkall Bible paper, out of a total edition of 430 copies, this copy out-of-series and signed by Moser at end of Vol II. The text for the Pennyroyal Caxton Bible follows the classic King James, or "Authorized" version, first published in 1611. The type is Galliard-Moser, designed by Matthew Carter and modified specifically for this project, and the type pages are composed and printed by Bradley Hutchinson of Digital Letterpress in Austin, Texas, after Moser 's designs and specifications. Mr. Hutchinson has rendered the computer-generated type into polymer printing plates and printed them letterpress, combining tradition with modern technology. The paper is Zerkall Bible, manufactured especially for this project and bearing the unique watermark of the Pennyroyal Caxton Press. The bindings are executed by the combined studios of Claudia Cohen and Sarah Creighton, of Easthampton, Massachusetts. Moser brought the experience of thirty years of engraving to bear on his illustrations for the King James Bible, the first edition in this century in which both the Old and the New Testaments are illustrated by a single artist. Working with a new medium known as resingrave, Moser has cut over 235 stunning illustrations which rank among his finest, and overseen the integration of these engravings into a seamless whole, what he has termed the "struggle to engage not only a sacred text but the greatest monument of our language; to grapple with typography and images befitting such sanctity and monumentality; and to wrestle with the devils and angels that reside therein." This book undoubtedly ranks among the greatest achievements of twentieth century fine bookmaking. With the original prospectus laid in.    [With:] 3 original preliminary pencil drawings by Moser for illustrations in The Holy Bible. Each 403 x 284 mm, each titled and signed by Moser. The subjects comprise: "Sanballat" (Nehemiah 2:10), "The Child" (Galatians 4:1), and "The Annunciation" (Luke 1:28).  [And:]    A trial binding dummy for the Pennyroyal Caxton Bible, folio, linen-backed boards, inscribed by Moser in pencil on the front free endpaper: "This binding dummy is from the workshops of Sarah Creighton & Claudia Cohen is a prototype for the binding of the Pennyroyal Press edition of the King James Bible. The cover papers were made by Tim Barrett at his paper mill at the Center for the Book at the University of Iowa. Barrett and I collected walnut husks around the mill building to dye the sheets. Unfortunately, the paper bruised and burnished, & the idea for a very humble biding was abandoned. / Barry Moser / 8.26.21."Property from the Collection of Mr. Barry MoserFor condition inquiries please contact lesliewinter@hindmanauctions.com

This white 1.3 Clubman example is fitted with the venerable and robust 1275cc A-Series engine, developing 68bhp. Supplied new by Rover Central Garages in Torbay, the V5C records this car as having had four previous keepers. The expiry date for the MoT is May 2022, and the odometer records 49,097 miles covered. The history folder includes original owner's books in their Rover wallet. The service book is stamped up until 34,033 miles in 2004, but there is a handwritten note attesting to an owner service at 48,721 miles during July 2021. The oil was changed and a new distributor cap, thermostat and spark plugs were fitted, while the cooling system was flushed and refilled with Comma G48 coolant. There are also MoT certificates from 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2019, and a few older bills. A spare key is also included. 1980 Austin Morris Mini 998 Pick-UpMake: Austin Model: Morris Mini Pick-upYear: 1980Mileage: 9000VIN: XLU10000702696Configuration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: SYA788WTransmission: manualAs well as providing tiny, budget transport for families, Minis also proved handy for business users, thanks to the van and pick-up derivatives. These commercial survivors are fewer and further between than their saloon counterparts because they generally had a harder life; hence they can attract a premium these days. The pick-up variant was manufactured from 1961 to 1983, making this Mini 95 quite a late example of the 58,179 constructed. The vendor acquired it in July 2015. Finished in Glacier White, it was registered in August 1980. The odometer currently shows 09043 miles, but the vendor believes this is unlikely to be correct. However, since purchase, he tells us that under 2000 miles has been covered and the vehicle has been garaged while in his ownership. As he is looking to downsize, he will not have a garage in future, hence the reluctant decision to sell. After being acquired by the present owner, the car has been presented for an MoT in Northern Ireland every year, and has passed first time - save for one year when the headlamps were deemed too low despite having passed the previous year with no problem. The current MoT certificate expires on 22 November; however, as the Mini is now over 40 years old, an MoT exemption can be requested. The car is, overall, in good order, and has obviously had some work done over the years, although there are no invoices or photographs relating to past renovation work. There is a tonneau cover for the rear load area, and there are also the original poles for a raised cover (although one is not with the car). Included in the well-organised history folder are the current V5C plus copies of previous V5 documents. There are details of previous owners plus some email correspondence with the first owner confirming that the Mini was used for his garden nursery business in Somerset. Also in the file are photocopies of relevant brochures, magazine features, a small selection of bills from 2016 onwards, general photographs, two owner's handbooks and a Haynes workshop manual. 1903 Wolseley 10HP Twin-Cylinder Four-Seat Rear-Entrance TonneauRegistration no. DO 54Chassis no. 510•Re-imported from New Zealand in the 1960s/1970s•Present ownership since 2000•Successfully completed 17 London-to-Brighton Runs with the vendor •Entered in the 2021 London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, no.161 Footnotes:The cars made by the Wolseley Tool & Motor-Car Company, Limited, are typical throughout of English rather than of Continental engineering practice. They have earned golden opinions for their power, simplicity, and freedom from breakdown...' – A B Filson Young, The Complete Motorist, 1904. Although long since departed, Wolseley was one of Britain's foremost makes throughout the Edwardian period and into the 1920s. The company had been founded by Irish-born Frederick York Wolseley in Sydney, Australia in 1887 to manufacture sheep-shearing equipment. Two years later a subsidiary was set up in Birmingham, England where works manager Herbert Austin would be responsible for the first Wolseley motor car, a three-wheeler built on Léon Bollée lines, in around 1895/1896. The three-wheeled models were made in strictly limited numbers and in 1899 were replaced with Wolseley's first four-wheeled design: a 5hp model featuring a front-mounted, horizontal, single-cylinder engine; chain final drive; and steering by tiller. Wolseley's motor manufacturing business having been acquired by armaments manufacturer Vickers Son & Maxim, production of the 5hp single and a 10hp twin commenced at a new factory in Adderley Park, Birmingham in 1901. The horizontal-engined Wolseleys sold well for the next couple of years, but the company's management was convinced that the future lay with vertical engines. Unwilling to abandon his favoured horizontal type, Herbert Austin left to found his own company, which, somewhat ironically, commenced production with a range of vertical-engined models. Purchased privately in 1999 from a John Smith, the car offered here is an example of Wolseley's Austin-designed 2.6-litre, twin-cylinder 10hp, a model produced between 1901 and 1905. The history file indicates that the car had been imported (around the 1960s/1970s) from New Zealand where it had been in use, having had some major restoration, with a non-original and very basic body. Used for the vendor's first attempt at the London-to-Brighton Run in 2000, the Wolseley only managed to get to Crawley having stopped many times, mostly due to fuel starvation. A comprehensive overhaul of the fuel system was then undertaken (new tank, new fuel lines, etc). Next to go was the rudimentary New Zealand-built body. Following a year's research, a completely new body was made, copied from the Wolseley in the Gaydon motor museum. The Wolseley's present body is thus completely authentic in appearance and is the same colour as when the car was new in 1903. Photographs of the body undergoing construction are on file. It was then discovered some of the gears had teeth missing, preventing them from engaging correctly. A complete new set of gears was made and fitted. (The old gears are available and may be used as patterns or possibly repaired.) The next problem found was that when the car was loaded (i.e. with four people), the handbrake (which is the main brake) was almost ineffective. A new brake design was implemented - almost identical to the original - and is said to work very well. It was now time to research the carburettor, which took almost two years, as many other Wolseleys had to be located and permission sought to copy their carburettors. A Mechanical Engineer then prepared a set of drawings, and Paul of Dula Engineering made a new Wolseley carburettor (at a considerable cost). The vendor advises us that this has greatly improved the car's performance and that it now runs very well. New pistons were installed and a trip to Brighton without a breakdown was almost guaranteed! However, it was discovered that in bad weather the distributor would take in water, necessitating the installation of a new distributor, which looks exactly like the original and works very well, emitting a visible spark to indicate that the tremblers are doing their job. On one Pioneer Run in Ireland, a serious front wheel wobble manifested itself, which was sorted out by Nigel Parrott at N P Veteran Engineering where the car was also treated to a major service. The track rods can now be adjusted to prevent any further wobbling. Details of the research carried out; modifications made; and new components fitted may be found within the substantial history file. Offered with an entry into the 2021 London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, the car also comes with a (copy) Wolseley handbook; two spare tyres (815x105); and the original distributor. 'DO 54' has been used almost every year since 2000 and has successfully completed 17 London-to-Brighton Runs as well as numerous 'Creepy Crawly' events and Pioneer Runs in Ireland. In the vendor's own words: 'I have carried out several improvements to make this car a reliable Brighton runner. Providing you get to know it and drive with care and attention, you will be assured of getting to the finish line, hopefully by 12pm!For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1912 Austin 10/12hp Two-Seat Tourer with DickeyRegistration no. AJ 1284Chassis no. 10227•An older restoration•Exceptionally original•Well known in VCC circles•Substantial history file Footnotes:General Manager of the Wolseley Sheep Shearing Machine Company, Herbert Austin set the Birmingham firm on the road to motor manufacture in 1896 when he designed its first automobile, a twin-cylinder tri-car. The first production Wolseley though, was four-wheeled and, like Austin's 1896 prototype, carried its single cylinder engine horizontally. Austin's belief in the horizontal engine's virtues was not shared by Wolseley's directors however, and he departed in 1905 to set up his own company at nearby Longbridge. Somewhat surprisingly perhaps, the first Austin cars were powered by conventional inline fours with side valves arranged in 'T-head' fashion. Chain drive was a feature of these early Austins but was supplanted by shaft drive within a few years. As well as the fours, Austin also marketed a single-cylinder model and a few sixes prior to WWI. Austin had its own large coachbuilding department and offered a wide variety of complete cars, and even in these early days was in the habit of using English place names for its various body styles. The 1.2-litre, four-cylinder, 10hp model was first introduced - for export only - in 1910, becoming available on the home market the following year, and in 1912 was upgraded with a 1.6-litre engine, as fitted to this car. This 'Edwardian' Austin with two-seater-plus-dickey coachwork was purchased by its last owner, Harry Watson, in 1991 and registered to his granddaughter, Rebecca Leake. 'AJ 1284' has attended numerous VCC rallies and is said to start easily and drive very well. An older restoration, the car remains exceptionally original and is described by the vendor as in excellent condition throughout. It comes complete with full weather equipment (hood, tonneau, etc) and covers for the lights. The wooden box on the running board contains an impressive array of tools, and there is a rear luggage compartment for other items. The accompanying history file is substantial, containing correspondence and notes relating to the car's early days and listing previous owners. These notes include discussion of whether the car was built with the 1.2-litre engine and returned to the factory to be fitted with the 1.6-litre unit, or whether it has had the latter from new. The file also contains a VCC dating certificate (issued 1952); a V5C Registration Certificate; and a (photocopy) handbook. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
