Original and unrestored1922/1923 P&M 600cc Motorcycle CombinationRegistration no. NR 1841Frame no. 10287Engine no. 02345• Present family ownership since 1957• Widely campaigned• Displayed at Stanford HallOffered for sale by his family, this P&M outfit formerly belonged to the late Angus Martin, an engineer involved in developing the first of Frank Whittle's jet engines during WW2. After the war he was proprietor of Dunsmore Garage (1948-1986); a husband and father of three; and, lastly but by no means least, a rider in the Isle of Man TT races in the 1940s, '50s, and '60s, and any circuit you care to name in Great Britain. One day he arrived back at Dunsmore Garage from an auction with the machine offered here, a 1922/1923 P & M motorcycle combination, 'NR 1841'. That was around 1957 when the vendor was ten years old. He remembers riding it for the first time around the pumps on the filling station forecourt, carefully changing gear with the hand-change gear lever: 'It was a fun machine, so different from all our father's other bikes.'Angus's daughter Angela discovered that the previous owner was a Mr Sparks, and when he died the P&M was sold by his friend Bob Haynes, together with all his assets. For some years the P&M remained unused in the garage's car showroom. Then, in the 1980s, the P&M began to be used more. A collection of photographs, VMCC and other magazines, show the sidecar being ridden by Angus Martin at Mallory Park (1989), the Banbury Run (early 1980s) and other events, once with his wife Audrey as a passenger, often with Vic Saunders. Angus Martin always wore his racing helmet, painted silver with a green shamrock on the front, ever a proud Ulsterman. In 1986, Dunsmore Garage was sold and the Martins retired to a house in Rugby. Angus spent many hours going to autojumbles with Vic Saunders, and rebuilding old bikes in a big shed at the end of the garden. At some point the P&M, together with a CSI Norton, spent some years at Stamford Hall on display before being returned to storage in the family garage in Rugby. Sadly, Angus Martin passed away in 1990 and the motorcycles were inherited by our vendor; living in London, he did not have a garage, so they stayed in his mother's garage and moved with her when she moved house again. In 2005, Colin Mitchell, a family friend, rode the P&M, with his lady wife as passenger, dressed in period costume, in the VMCC Warwicks 50th Coventry parade at Coombe Park, winning the Jack Butler Trophy for best Vintage combination. Eventually, the garage was required to house Angela's Austin Seven Ruby, so arrangements were made with the VMCC for them to have the P&M on loan. Bill Phelps was one of the first to accommodate the P&M, and among the papers there is a very interesting account of his stewardship of the machine. The VMCC kept it well maintained, and the P&M was ridden in events such as the Banbury Run. In 2013 it was ridden by David Davies, editor of the VMCC magazine, and was pictured therein leaving Gaydon. Last taxed for the road in 2014, 'NR 1841' has been well cared for and kept running by the VMCC, and was entrusted to the prestigious Sammy Miller Museum in 2022 for repair and recommissioning after an accident. The vendor has now decided that it would be best to pass the P&M on to someone who would, it is hoped, treasure it as its custodians have done for the last 66 years.Accompanying documentation includes an original Instruction Manual (well used); three tax discs from the 1920s; a current V5C Registration Certificate; correspondence; parts price lists; various photographs; and details of events entered and prizes won, mostly VMCC related. There are also numerous magazines with articles and photographs of the outfit being ridden in various events. The history file's contents testify to the care taken of the P&M by the VMCC, showing their great love and respect for these lovely old motorcycles.Having spent 66 years in the care of one family, and displaying that wonderful patina that only an original and unrestored machine can have, this delightful 100-year-old P&M combination is worthy of the closest inspection.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

ALAN THORNHILL (BRITISH 1921-2020) TOM STOPPARDnumbered 220 on neckpatinated terracottaheight: 43cm; 17inTom Stoppard sat for this bust in 1973, a year after his play Jumpers had won the Evening Standard Award for Best Play and London Theatre Critics Award for Best New Play. Thornhill was a great fan of Stoppard's work. He recalled of the present bust: 'Dissatisfied with the first day's attempt I did another in one day and felt I had made a breakthrough'. A bronze cast of the present work is in the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas (Austin) which has an extensive holding of Stoppard's papers. Stoppard was born TomáÅ¡ Sträussler in Czechoslovakia in 1937. When the Nazis invaded the country in 1939 the Sträussler family fled to Asia. After the death of his father in Singapore his mother married Major Kenneth Stoppard, and after the War the family resettled in England. Stoppard worked first as a journalist, then as a theatre critic. His major break-through as a playwright was with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, first staged at the Edinburgh Fringe in the summer of 1966, and then in April 1967 at the National Theatre. Acclaimed plays have followed, amongst them The Real Inspector Hound (1968), Jumpers (1972), Travesties (1975), Arcadia (1993), and Leopoldstadt (2020).ARR may apply

BERNARD MYERS (BRITISH 1925-2007) Bernard Myers (Lots 98-123) IntroductionTrained as a gunner in the RAF during the Second World War, Bernard Myers studied at St Martin’s School of Art (1947-49) and Camberwell (1949-51) before studying painting at the Royal College of Art in 1951. Fellow students included John Bratby and Jack Smith, Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff. After graduating ARCA in 1954, Myers taught, variously at Camberwell, Hammersmith and Ealing art schools, and was senior lecturer in drawing at the Architectural Association School. At the AAS he was talent-spotted to return to the RCA, where he spent the following two decades, punctuated in 1968 and 1971 by stints as Visiting Professor at the Indian Institute of technology, New Delhi. His final teaching post was as Chair of Design Technology at Brunel University (1979-85). At the RCA students such as James Dyson treasured Myers’ good advice, remembering him as ‘cheerful, irrepressible [and] rather dapper… with a tweed suit and bowtie…’ But as well as being upbeat Myers was also appreciated for his considerable range of mind and intellect. On being made a fellow of the RCA, in his welcome speech the Dean noted that Myers ‘…must without doubt be the most versatile graduate ever to emerge from the Painting School. Since joining the College in 1961 he has been, by virtue of an encyclopaedic knowledge which comfortably bestrides the boundaries between the humane and the technological, and of his superlative gifts as a teacher, in demand by virtually every School and Department within the College…’ The plus side for Myers was that teaching left him free to practise his own art exactly as he wished. As he noted: ‘Some artists find that teaching interferes with their work. I find it clarifies my work.’ Indeed, he had an unstoppable compulsion to paint, incessantly exploring a wide range of subject matter, in particular the landscapes he encountered on his varied travels, the still-lifes he returned to again and again in his studio, the nudes he painted in weekly life-classes, and his not infrequent forays into abstraction, precipitated in part by his fascination with space. He married Pamela Fildes, granddaughter of the painter Sir Luke Fildes in the early 1950s (lot 98); they lived first in Windsor and then in Kensington before moving in 1974 into one of the studios overlooking the Thames at St Peter’s Wharf, purpose built by Julian Trevelyan, next to Hammersmith Terrace (lots 121-123). He had several one-man shows in the West End, the first at the New Art Centre in 1969; his last with Austin Desmond Fine Art in 1991. He wrote two books on Goya, others on the history of sculpture and How to Look at Art, and co-edited The Macmillan Encyclopedia of Art’ (1979). He also penned articles for the magazines in The Artist (May 1988) on his highly original approach to pastel (lots 110, 111, 113-117), and in Artists and Illustrators (1995) on his Venice views (lots 118 & 119).BERNARD MYERS (BRITISH 1925-2007)MISS PAMELA FILDESsigned, titled and dated on reverse Bernard Myers / Miss Pamela Fildes / 1955-6oil on canvas122 x 91.5cm; 48 x 36in(unframed)Pamela Fildes was the granddaughter of the painter Sir Luke Fildes RA (1843-1927).
