Lot 35

A 1934 Austin Seven Ulster Special, registration number WSJ 430, chassis number 205539, ***engine number M152461 (not M15246)***, maroon. This well known and extensively campaigned Austin Seven Special was constructed by Doug Bukin and registered in 1988. During Doug's ownership the Austin was campaigned in over 80 competitive events in both circuit and hill climbs, with both the VSCC and 750 Motor Club at various venues including Goodwood, Mallory Park, Donington Park, Prescott, Silverstone and Shelsley Walsh amongst others. The car is well constructed with an aluminium body in the Ulster style over tubular framework with a 6 ft 3 inch chassis, lowered axles and 17 inch wheels. The engine is highly modified with a high compression cylinder head, an Allen Billet crankshaft, Renault 5 aluminium pistons and crank, an aluminium deep sump, big valves, a lightened flywheel, a four branch exhaust manifold, a single modified carburettor and overbored block (803cc) and a remote spin off oil filter. The electric system has been uprated to 12V total loss system, with a recently replaced full wiring loom (receipt on file) and a rebuilt starter motor by Tim Miller. Both the cooling and ignition system are uprated for competition use. The car is offered for auction with two close ratio three speed gearboxes, for both circuit/road use and hill climbs, four cycle wings, a spare wheel, headlights and other spares. The history file contains two VSCC eligibility forms (No 1223/2788), photographs of the build, photographs of the car in competition, hill climb and circuit set up notes, various photocopies of magazine articles of Doug's Racing Exploits, books on Austin Seven Specials, VSCC buff forms, SORNS, a receipt for the rewire and servicing (£1,465.72), and expired MOTs. WSJ 430 is something of a TV star having previously appeared on the BBC 1 The One Show with Doug and Angelica Bell at Silverstone in April 2008. WSJ 430 is ready to take to the track or hill climb and is reluctantly for sale due to the vendor having insufficient time to use the car as he intended. V5C, MOT and tax exempt See cover and other illustrations

Lot 85

A Cast Bronze Ship’s Bell from the Clipper Ship Verena the bell inscribed ‘Verena’ built in Sunderland 1865 by S. P. Austin, together with a primitive painting on panel of the clipper. Note: Both discovered in the Swansea area, the former from a scrap yard and the painting from a local public house, although any Welsh connections with the clipper are unknown. The Clipper Ship Era by Arthur H. Clark: Clark presents the history of clipper ships from the perspective of a captain. Clark himself commanded thetheand the steamshipsandbetween 1863 and 1877. Clark’s account of clipper history both benefits from and suffers from his perspective asan American ship’s officer.A lot of space is taken up with individuals Clark knew personally. While on the one hand we gain access to personal anecdotes to fill out these men’s lives, we also lose some objectivity. Lots of captains are described as “good men” who are “worthy of every honour.” It’s hard not to come away with the impression that at times Clark is circling the wagons to protect the reputations of men he knows. This skews his perspective when discussing topics like shipboard disciplinary tactics like beatings, whippings, and confinement. His (not entirely unjustified) feelings are displayed clearly. The” skippers,” maties” and” Jackie’s” alike belonged to the lowest stratum of British social classification, which, according to the chronicles of those days, was pretty low. They were coarse, vulgar, ignorant men, full of lurid oaths; their persons emitted an unpleasant odour of cheap rum and stale tobacco; they had a jargon of their own and were so illiterate as to be unable to speak or write their own language with any degree of correctness.
