Vanessa Bell (British, 1879-1961)Landscape at St Tropez signed with initials and dated 'VB 1921' (lower right)oil on canvas35.7 x 59.8 cm. (14 x 23 1/2 in.)Footnotes:ProvenanceWith Austin Desmond Fine Art, London (as Landscape in the South of France)Private Collection, JapanThis painting was carried out during an extended period spent by Vanessa Bell at La Maison Blanche, a house at the back of St Tropez. It belonged to Charles Vildrac, poet and Paris dealer, and his wife Rose. Bell, her three children, their two nurses and Duncan Grant went by train in October 1921, returning to England in January 1922. Several landscapes, such as this one, resulted from this visit as well as one of Bell's best paintings, her Interior with a Table, St Tropez (Tate). The view through the French doors in that work is the same – if more distant – as the present painting, with a glimpse of the Mediterranean to the right. Bell's colour here is subtle and warm, putting one in mind of her love of Corot's Italian landscapes and possibly of recent works by André Derain that she had seen in Paris. We are grateful to Richard Shone for compiling this catalogue entry. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * AR* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.AR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Sir Cedric Morris (British, 1889-1982)Green Mountain Lilies signed and dated 'CEDRIC MORRIS-54' (lower left), further partially signed and titled 'Green Mountain Lillies/Cedric Mo...' (on a label attached to the stretcher)oil on canvas91.7 x 71.8 cm. (36 x 28 1/4 in.)Footnotes:ProvenanceSir Peter Wakefield & Miss Mary Rose WakefieldWith Austin Desmond Fine Art, London, where purchased by the present ownerPrivate Collection, U.K.ExhibitedLondon, Tate Gallery, Cedric Morris, 28 March-13 May 1984, cat.no.89 (as Flowers in a Brown Jug)LiteratureRichard Morphet, Cedric Morris, Tate Gallery, London, 1984, p.117, cat.no.89 (col.ill, back cover)'I like to think that behind this special painting [flower painting] an esoteric line of thought that expresses itself in symbols portraying the eternity of experience that flowers themselves have' ('Concerning Flower Painting', The Studio, May 1942, pp.121-132).Although a frequent traveller, Cedric Morris spent much of the early 1920s based in Paris and the latter part of the decade working in a studio at 32 Great Ormond Street, London. During these years, the self-taught Morris developed complex surrealist, abstract and portrait practices. He engaged with leading art and society figures of the day, developing friendships as broad as Nancy Cunard and Peggy Guggenheim, Winifred and Ben Nicholson, Christopher Wood and John Banting. He staged his first one-man exhibition in Rome in 1922 and was represented in the British Pavilion of the Venice Biennale in 1928 (and again in 1932). He exhibited as part of the Seven & Five Society and had one man shows with Arthur Tooth and in The Hague.Following a decade of city life, in 1929 Morris and his partner Arthur Lett-Haines took a lease on Pound Farm in Suffolk. The move to the country was to be permanent, the couple moving to nearby Benton End a few years later and there establishing The East Anglian School of Painting (famously tutoring Lucian Freud). The gabled and buttressed Benton End dates to the sixteenth century and with its extensive walled gardens provided a perfect habitat for the proliferation of flowers and vegetables. It was here that Morris was able to fully indulge his passion, becoming a plantsman rather than a gardener and demonstrating his tremendous skill by rearing varieties that would not ordinarily be found in this country. Of particular note were his irises, for which he won the Foster Memorial Plaque, the highest award made by the British Iris Society, in 1949. Other favourites were the roses, sweet peas and lilies that lined the garden beds. Green Mountain Lilies (1950) celebrates a selection of these flowers and the diversity of colour that was achieved in the garden by Morris and his botanist associate Nigel Scott during the 1950s. The years in which Scott worked alongside Morris at Benton End have been described as 'the most perfect period of the garden'. The present work, impressive in scale, was included in and illustrated as the back cover of the Tate Gallery's 1984 exhibition catalogue on Cedric Morris. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

He volunteered for service at the age of 29, a commando, he was subsequently captured at Dieppe in 1942 and spent three years as a prisoner of war. Naturally he found it difficult to produce any art throughout the conflict, but as soon as peacetime returned, he set about working. These early post-war years saw limited success for Hilton as he endeavoured to re-start his career whilst also juggling several part-time jobs and a young family. Initially Hilton worked in the figurative mode he had developed pre-war. Yet towards the end of the decade his interest in abstraction heightened, primarily in the Parisian Tachisme movement (examples of which were first shown in London in December 1949). Thus, his output pivoted significantly and, with it, his career. It only took until 1951 for Hilton's efforts to be recognised, at first as part of the mixed exhibition Abstract Art at the AIA galleries in the summer of that year. The early patronage of Howard Bliss saw his work exhibited at the Tate Gallery the following spring, and by the summer of 1952 his first solo exhibition was held at Gimpel Fils. Working in a now entirely abstract approach described by Hilton as 'Neo Plastic', his paintings attracted the attention of key critics such as Lawrence Alloway and Patrick Heron. Both championed Hilton as a protagonist within a new wave of British abstract art by selecting his work for inclusion in key exhibitions such as Heron's Space in Colour at the Hanover Galleries in 1953. Further success followed with a second Gimpel Fils solo exhibition in 1954 and his position was cemented by his inclusion in Alloway's important Nine Abstract Artists published the same year.Amid such positive momentum one could be forgiven in assuming that Hilton had struck upon an approach to be explored for years to come. This however was not the case. Writing to Terry Frost just prior to the execution of the present canvas, Hilton volunteered 'I am tired of non-figuration. Though they may not be overtly figurative, I am going to introduce if possible, a more markedly human element in my pictures ... I'm not going to [be] 'afraid' of figuration anymore. I give prominence to space-creating forms, but I shall make human attachments as I see fit' (quoted in Adrian Lewis, Roger Hilton, Ashgate Publishing, Aldershot, 2003, p.63). This new manner of working - the oscillation between abstraction and figuration, of which the present canvas is one of the earliest examples, henceforth dominated Hilton's output for the greatest part of his career. Hilton's importance was subsequently marked by his first retrospective held at the ICA in early 1958, which led to the Tate Gallery and the Arts Council both making their first acquisitions of his work.It is therefore not surprising that the importance of October 1955 within Hilton's oeuvre has been recognised on several occasions. Notably by Lawrence Alloway who selected it for inclusion in the 1959 British Council exhibition, its inclusion in the major 1994 Hilton retrospective at the Hayward Gallery and by Andrew Lambirth for inclusion in his 2007 monograph, in which he writes:'Hilton's forms of this period have a lively resilience that impresses through their strangely self-contained shapes ... The paint is rich and juicy, texturally varied and spontaneous. The image looks as if Hilton has copied down signs from another language, a visual language consisting of pictograms and hieroglyphics, so full of potential meaning do these pictures appear'.
