TOCQUEVILLE ALEXIS DE: (1805-1859) Alexis Clérel, Viscount de Tocqueville. French Diplomat, Historian and political Scientist, best-known for his early sociological works Democracy in America (1840) and the Old Regime and the Revolution (1856). An excellent A.L.S., `alexis de Tocqueville´, two pages, 8vo, n.p. [London], Friday morning, n.d., to Mme. Austin, in French. Tocqueville regrets not being able to attend her correspondent´s invitation, stating in part `..Mr. Beaumont and I have dinner tonight at the Marquis of Lansdowne house.. but I do not want the opportunity to meet you one more time before you leave London..´ Tocqueville further adds a post-scriptum referring to a message just received, referring to a meeting he will have with Mr. Reeve. The document bears to the upper left front corner a blind embossed seal. With blank address leaf, in Tocqueville´s hand, bearing a very attractive small red wax seal. Small area of paper loss to the upper right corner of the address leaf as a result of the opening. VG
