1974 Rover P6 3500SReg. no. GAE 397NChassis no. 48111099DEngine no. t.b.a.The Rover P6 represented something of a departure from the P4 which it replaced in 1963. Whereas the P4 was traditional and somewhat conservative – although still a superb car – the P6 was forward-thinking and thoroughly modern. It was extremely well-received, and in 1964 became the very first winner of the European Car of the Year title. Intended to appeal to a broad market, the P6 was priced lower and initially had smaller four-cylinder engines, as opposed to the P4’s thirsty ‘six’. It offered some ground-breaking features for a car in its class, such as De Dion tube rear suspension and four-wheel disc brakes – inboard at the rear. In terms of styling, too, it was bang up to date, and indeed still looked good after a few minor revisions when production ended in 1977. The ‘ultimate’ P6 is often said to be the V8-engined 3500, which was first offered in 1968 after Rover acquired the rights to the superb Buick-derived V8 engine from General Motors. Particularly in manual 3500S form – S here standing for ‘synchromesh’ – the P6 with this engine became a real driver’s car, with performance that still holds up well in 2021.This superb 1974 3500S was bought new by a Mr Pollard of Bristol. The car was supplied by MWM Motors in rare Paprika Red with Ebony leather upholstery, its £3,186.75 purchase price including a spare wheel mounting, Radiomobile 1095 unit and full ‘End Rust’ treatment. Mr Pollard was to own the car until his death in 1999, always having it MOT tested and maintained by MWM, with work carried out including new wings and a respray. The car passed to a family friend, who similarly cherished the car – indeed, it has been a regular attendee and award winner at car shows in the South West. Gunston & Kelly of Bristol took over MOT duties, and thus, remarkably, this car has only been MOT tested by two garages in its 47 years. With just three registered keepers in two families, detailed MOT history and continuous Bristol ownership from new, this P6 has excellent pedigree. The odometer stuck at 81,640 miles in 2017, but the car has only seen minimal usage since then. In very good all-round condition, and said to be running and driving well, this fine example of one of the most useable 70s classics comes with the aforementioned MOT history, owner’s manual, Radiomobile instructions, and a two-part Repair Operation Manual in its original British Leyland box.Estimate: £10,000 – 12,000

1963 Austin GipsyRegistration no. 336 KOMChassis no. G4/M15/SE12519Odometer reading: 19,071MOT Expiry: 23/3/2022 *Rare Austin Gipsy Fire Engine*Believed to be incredibly original*Large history file Produced between 1958 and 1968, the Austin Gipsy was a direct competitor to the Land Rover Series I. This Gipsy Fire Engine was registered in September 1963 and spent its first 15 years on the works fire service at the Wolseley Works (Morris Motors Ltd) in Birmingham. It still retains a lot of its original equipment including hoses, branches, breathing apparatus, ladders, first aid kits, bolt cutters, axes, uniforms and of course the front-mounted Godiva fire pump. The vehicle been regularly MOT'd and comes with an original workshop manual, as well as many other original documents. We are advised that the engine and running gear are in good order, and the vehicle runs and drives as it should. Since acquisition the vehicle has been garage stored. The vendor bought it from a retired policeman with the objective of taking it on rallies, but due to the Covid-19 restrictions the car has sadly not been used as much as the vendor would have liked. 1959 Land Rover Series II Registration no. 494 HKJChassis no. 141000108Odometer reading: 21,658MOT Expiry: N/A*In current family ownership since 1962*Exceptionally low mileage *Great potential on offerThis Land Rover Series II offers the rare opportunity of purchasing a family owned vehicle of 59 years . Officially unveiled in 1958, the Land Rover Series II was the first land Rover to be officially 'styled' by a design team headed by David Bache. This included adding a more rounded design, adding features that are recognisable even on a modern day Defender. The Series II also offered mechanical improvements over its predecessor, such as wider axels and a new 2286 four-cylinder petrol engine. This example, purchased by the vendors father in 1962, has been used sparingly through its life and has covered only 21,658 miles. The vehicle is in good condition, however will require further attention. The exterior body is solid but has acquired various dings and scratches over its lifetime, including a large dent on the front wing. The interior is also of a typical working Land Rover condition and could require further attention if desired. The roof of the car also has a large rip on the left hand side. Considering its one owner history the car comes with an excellent history file, but will require further attention mechanically. There is certainly great potential on offer here. Please click the link to view the walkaround video of this lot: click hereFootnotes:To view a video of this lot please click hereVendor Score Total: 70/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 1972 Austin Van Den Plas Princess 1300 Mk3Registration no. EOX 333LChassis no. VA2S33253MOdometer reading: 52,678MOT Expiry: 26 April 2022 *Low mileage Princess*Desirable Vandan Plas*Restored 2019/20 The idea behind the Vandan Plas 1300 was to present a small, yet comfortable and luxurious car that would be idea for a downsize from a Jaguar or Rover. Inside, the car featured a plethora of features including leather seats, wood veneers, and front and rear picnic tables. Produced between 1963 and 1974, the car was marketed under multiple BMC brands including that of Austin, Riley, MG and Wolesley. The automatic transmission on the car was also impressive for a small car, featuring four speeds which was more than that of most larger cars at the time which only had three. The Princess was produced with the 1100cc engine from 1963 to 1974, with the 1300cc engine joining in 1968. This 1972 model is a 1300cc car that is presented in Harvest Gold with a Vanden Plas Olive green interior. The car has a low mileage of 52,768 miles, and has recently been restored. There is some history that accompanies the car, and engine is running and driving nicely. A lovely tidy example. Please click the link to view the walkaround video of this lot: click hereLot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1949 Rover P3 75 SaloonRegistration no. 533 XUPChassis no. R8413393Odometer Reading: TBAMot Expiry: Exempt*Offered from long term custodian*Restored throughout current ownership*Starts and runs wellRover's range in the immediate post-war years was much the same as it had been in 1939, the first all-new Rover - the P4 - not appearing until the autumn of 1949. Before then an interim design - the P3 - combining the traditional styling of the existing P2 model with the engine, gearbox and running gear intended for its successor, filled the gap. Introduced in February 1948, the P3 featured 1.6-litre four-cylinder and 2.1-litre six-cylinder versions of Rover's new inlet-over-exhaust engine, the model designations being '60' and '75' respectively. This P3 starts promptly, soon settling into a quiet & smooth tick over as expected from a six cylinder block, with gears selected easily whilst manoeuvring. Restored over a period of some 30 years, this Rover is ready for its new owner to enjoy immediately. The car comes with photographs of restoration, relating invoices and a V5 document.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 83/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. The ex-Royal Household2013 Range Rover Vogue SERegistration no. OY13 TBUChassis no. SALGA2JE7DA1158Odometer reading: 38,420MOT Expiry: N/A*Royal Range Rover*Low mileage with a high specification*Full service history with warranty (expiring July 2021)A rare opportunity to purchase a Range Rover with links to the Royal Family. This L405 Range Rover was originally supplied new to The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge via Land Rover's VIP Department in 2013, and is also fitted with many additional features. The car has been photographed with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on a visit to Perthshire in 2013, and is presented in the beautiful 'Baltic Blue' colour scheme with Almond and Espresso leather interior (both of which have been treated with Jewelultra Diamondbrite paint and leather protector to ensure longevity). The SE Vogue model, powered by a 4.4-litre V8 diesel engine (340hp), was given to the royal couple for their own personal use. The L405 Range Rover has been a popular vehicle with the Royal Family, and is a model still used by the family today. Usually, Land Rovers and Range Rovers used by the Royal Household have the vehicle registration numbers changed once out of service, making it difficult to confirm their famous history. This example is a rare exception to this. The car has a low mileage of only 38,420 miles, and comes fully equipped with 20' alloy wheels, auto high beam assist, advanced park assist, heated front & rear seats, a panoramic glass roof, side steps, electric front seats, Meridian sound system, front & rear parking sensors (with reversing camera), remote garage door opener, remote park heat facility, a drinks fridge, electric tow bar, and Land Rover premium carpet and rubber floormats (both of which are in excellent condition). The car also features a range of safety kit including ABS, additional curtain and thorax airbags, plus a range of electronic driver aids such as stability control and emergency brake assist. The vendor purchased the car in July 2020 from Jardine Lancaster Bracknell, and the vehicle is also supplied with a full service history, a Land Rover warranty until July 2021, and a free Land Rover annual service in 2021 at JLR Slough. Overall we are told the car is in excellent condition and drives very well, presenting itself as a rare opportunity to acquire a vehicle with Royal roots. Please click the link to view the walkaround video of this lot: click hereFootnotes:Vendor Score Total: 100/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. The work of Sir Alec Issigonis designed on his original mini platform with a more rugged use in mind aimed at take military business away from Land Rover, obviously there wasnÕt a huge uptake in armyÕs swapping Land Rovers for the little Moke except for the British Navy who took some for use on the decks of aircraft carriers. The Moke had far more success with civilians with over 14,000 British built Austin Moke sold although less than 10% remained in the UK.This particular Moke was supplied as a kit from the UK and built in South Africa and comes with the later 1275cc Mini engine and 4 speed manual gearbox, in 4 seat format with the front 2 seats still retaining the original vinyl covers.Imported from South Africa last year and being registered with the DVLA in December 2020, Being a 1966 vehicle it is tax and MOT exempt.A well restored Moke now fetches over £20,000 in the UK.

The last of the Rover V8 TVRs the Chimaera was launched in 1992, production continued until 2003 by which time over 5,200 cars were produced. Loved by Sports car, track day and British car fans for there bare bones approach to speed. TVRs have no driver aids, no ABS and most importantly no wasted weight!Quirky by design TVR like to do things differently, just get in a Chimaera and try and get back out? The door release is a rotary knob behind the gearstick, why? Because they can. Lightweight, simple and quirky has led to TVRs being like no other and the Chimera is the perfect example, a loud V8, lovely short throw gearbox, very direct steering and excellent handling.Registered on the 1st of April 1993 this Chimaera has a 4.0 Rover V8 fettled by TVR in Blackpool linked to a 5 speed manual gearbox and double wishbone suspension.Finished in Green with contrasting cream leather with black diamond stitch accents and aluminium dash faschia.MOT till January next year and having covered only 45 thousand miles this car was driven to us by the current owner.

From the private collection of legendary British racing driver Steve Soper, this genuinely original Elan Sprint is simply the best we have ever seen. One of the most original Lotus Elans that we have ever seen This lovely Elan Sprint was supplied new on 27/01/1972 and has one of the most comprehensive history files that we have ever seen With a warranted mileage of just 21,886 Featured in a four-page spread of 'Classic Cars' magazine Offered directly from legendary British racing driver, Steve Soper The glass fibre-bodied Elan may only have been available initially as a Roadster Kit but its specification was very advanced and adhered to Chapman's “just add lightness” engineering philosophy. Power came from Harry Mundy's Ford-based Lotus 1558cc DOHC engine, it was fitted with disc brakes all round, and the independent suspension was set up to optimise ride quality and handling finesse, qualities for which this little car is still admired. It soon sired other derivatives including the Type 26R racer, the Type 36 fixed-head coupe, the Type 45 drop-head coupe, and the Type 50 Elan +2 of 1967.  The 1971 Elan Sprint was essentially based on the Series 4 Elan bodyshell and was primarily designed to rekindle demand and improve the performance of the nine-year-old sports car. Conceived by Lotus Sales Director, Graham Arnold, the Sprint's most notable external feature was the horizontally split two-tone paintwork in half a dozen vibrant colours. Meanwhile, providing the 'go to match the show' a new big-valve cylinder head with high-lift cams and a raised compression ratio, the work of Engineering Director Tony Rudd, provided a 25% increase in power to 126bhp. The drivetrain was suitably toughened and braced and the front callipers were redesigned to cope with the increased performance which was brisk for the time with 60mph arriving in 6.6 seconds,100mph in 19 seconds and a top speed of 123mph. This lovely Elan Sprint was supplied new on 27/01/1972 to a Mr Marcantono of Newcastle upon Tyne in kit form; the car costing £972 and the engine/transmission costing £795. Both invoices are in one of the most comprehensive history files that we have ever seen. There are literally dozens and dozens of invoices (mostly from Midland’s renowned specialist, Paul Matty), old MOTs, CDs containing many pictures and a completed record of all purchases during the car’s life. Unusually for an Elan, this allows us to warrant the mileage of just 21,886 as genuine. It's one of the most original Lotus Elans that we have ever seen. In June 2014, ‘Classic Cars’ magazine thought so too as they featured this particular car in a four-page spread. The magazine article, which waxes lyrical about the superb originality of this car, is included within the astonishing history file. The condition of the car is also outstanding with the best door gaps and overall panel fitment of any Elan ever seen by us. All original tools, jack and service books/handbook are present and just 4 owners shown from new on the V5C; all of them keeping this car for extended periods and clearly enjoying the experience. They say the best is never the cheapest. This Elan Sprint drop head convertible is simply the best we have ever seen and represents a fantastic investment opportunity with outstanding provenance, from known ownership and in a completely ready-to-use condition. Spring is here, classic events are beckoning – let’s go! ‘They were under the impression we were going to lie in our ditch, shoot the enemy from a distance and they would run away. But I believe we caught the enemy on the hop that day and we had to take the fight to them... I decided the best way to attack was a full-frontal assault. It was my decision to fix bayonets and assault their position.’ (Corporal M. R. Byles, 1st Battalion, Princess of Wales Royal Regiment) The exceptional Iraq ‘Battle of Danny Boy’ M.C. group of six awarded to Corporal M. R. Byles, 1st Battalion, Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment, who was awarded a Military Cross for gallantry on 14 May 2004 when he dismounted his Warrior armoured vehicle and led a full frontal assault with automatic fire, grenades and fixed bayonets to clear an enemy trench system – a comrade of Johnson Beharry, whose Victoria Cross was awarded for bravery during the same extraordinarily action-packed tour, Byles is extensively mentioned in Beharry’s memoir ‘Barefoot Soldier’ and also in Richard Holmes’s compelling account of this renowned 7 month deployment ‘Dusty Warriors’ Military Cross, E.II.R., reverse inscribed ‘24836752 Cpl M. R. Byles, PWRR, 2005’; General Service 1962-2007, 1 clasp, Northern Ireland (24836752 Pte M R Byles R Hamps); N.A.T.O. Medal 1994, 1 clasp, Former Yugoslavia; Iraq 2003-11, no clasp (24836752 M R Byles PWRR); Jubilee 2002, unnamed as issued; Accumulated Campaign Service Medal 1994 (24836752 Pte M R Byles PWRR) good very fine and better (6) £14,000-£18,000 --- M.C. London Gazette 18 March 2005. The following is extracted from the official recommendation submitted by Lieutenant B. U. Plenge (Officer Commanding, 9 Platoon, C Company, 1st Battalion, Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment): ‘Report on the actions taken by Corporal Byles on the 14 May 2004 at Danny Boy Permanent Vehicle Check Point: On the afternoon of 14 May 2004 Corporal Byles was travelling in the back of Warrior 30 with Private Beggs. The call sign had been crashed out in response to a mortar attack on camp and subsequent ambush on light call signs from 1st Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. As W30 arrived on the scene to the north of Danny Boy, and to the west of the dual carriageway, Lieutenant Plenge gave the signal to debus and a quick steer to another friendly dismounted call sign (Lance-Corporal Wood, and Privates Rush and Tatawaki). Almost immediately they began to come under sporadic small arms and RPG fire. Corporal Byles was then quick to identify the enemy positions that posed the biggest threat. He issued Battle orders to the section and they broke down into fire-teams. He assessed that the best way to assault the positions was full frontal. This was due to the ground and also to minimise the threat of Blue on Blue [‘friendly fire’] from heavy call signs by remaining clearly visible to them. They then crossed the open ground using fire-team fire and movement. Approximately 10 metres from the position, the order, “Pairs assault” was given by Corporal Byles. At this point the section split with Lance-Corporal Wood assaulting one half and Corporal Byles the other. Bayonets were fixed and grenades and automatic fire was used to clear the 20m long trench position. There were several enemy on the position and 4 Prisoners of War were captured. Almost immediately the trench came under fire from a depth position, previously unseen to the south. The Prisoners of War had to be controlled quickly due to the numbers involved (5 soldiers/4 prisoners) and the pressure of the situation. They were therefore treated roughly as some still resisted, and all were bound with plasicuffs. Corporal Byles then organised a full re-org on the position despite being under effective enemy fire from 5 enemy in depth. He began to engage the enemy and killed 2. A further 1 was killed by chain gun from a Warrior call sign, and the other 2 played dead and were subsequently captured. After a few moments W22, commanded by Sergeant Broome, arrived on the position. At this point Corporl Byles and Private Beggs left the rest of the section to rejoin the other dismounts from his Platoon. They then assisted on the re-org conducted by W33A. Throughout the whole contact Corporal Byles showed immense professionalism under pressure. He showed bravery in the face of the enemy and strong leadership qualities in leading a dangerous assault against a larger enemy position. He is certainly a credit to his Platoon, Company and Cap badge and it is my belief that he should be recognised as such.’ Mark Richard Byles was born in Portsmouth in 1970. Having joined the British Army, he transferred to the 1st Battalion, Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment in June 2003 and was deployed with an advance party of his unit to Iraq in early April 2004. His battalion’s seven month tour of Iraq in 2004, during Operation Telic 4, would be a highly notable deployment under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Matt Maer, during which a number of very high profile and dangerous events took place; the Battle of ‘Danny Boy’ and the ‘Siege of CIMIC House’ (CIMIC House was the HQ of British led Civil Military Co-operation) most significant amongst them. In addition, the battalion conducted Operation Waterloo, clearing insurgents from Al Amarah. Large numbers of gallantry awards were won, including Private Johnson Beharry’s Victoria Cross. During that tour, the 1st Battalion, Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment Battlegroup faced the most constant period of conflict of any British Army unit since the Korean War. 1 Mechanised Brigade, within which the Battalion served, fired more small arms ammunition in those six months than the British Army as a whole did in thirty years in Northern Ireland. This Battlegroup in Maysan Province faced over one hundred contacts in one day alone and close to 900 over the duration of the tour. Every member of the Battalion on this operation was in some form of contact. To quote the Commanding Officer, ‘That in itself made it a tour like no other’. Into the crucible Stationed at Camp Abu Naji, Al-Amarah, Iraq, for the duration of the tour, the battalion’s role was to police Maysan Province, of which Al-Amarah is the capital, assisting the Iraq Civil Defence Corps (ICDC) maintain law and order. In implementing this, the earlier operations in Kosovo were intended to serve as a model: a combination of foot patrols, Land Rover patrols and Vehicle Check Points, or VCPs. However, the battalion assumed command of the Province from 1 Light Infantry on Sunday 18 April just as a major backlash against coalition forces by the Mahdi Army loyal to Muqtadar Al-Sadr was getting underway. The situation deteriorated rapidly, with repeated violent attacks in Al Amarah itself and the repelling of an attack on a joint PWRR / Light Infantry patrol in the nearby town of Majar Al Kabir. Corporal Byles’ role whilst in theatre was that of dismount commander - commanding troops following their deployment out of the back of a Warrior tracked armoured vehicle - in C Company. His comrade in C Company, Private Sewell remembered being faced with the reality on the ground soon after arrival: ‘We were deploying on what we believed to be a peace keeping operation. That idea lasted approximately 24 hours. On arriving at the base location, C Company, along with B Company 1 Light Infantry were deployed to the city to deal with an incident that turned from bad to worse in a short space of time... The contact was a definitely a planned ambush on the coalition force callsigns [callsign denoting a group of soldiers] as they moved through the location at that time. Unluckily for the enemy, I d...
