FRANK STELLA (AMERICAN B.1936) TUFTONBORO Signed and dated '74 in pencil, numbered 96/100, bearing two embossed studio stamps, colour lithograph and screenprint 44cm x 56cm (17.25in x 22in) Provenance: The John Calcutt Collection Note: Frank Stella is one of the great American artists associated with the Minimalism movement of the 1960s. Minimalism spanned many artistic fields, from the compositions of musician Philip Glass, to the plays of Samuel Beckett. In terms of the visual arts, it is characterised by an often 'hard-edged' take on abstraction and a systemic approach to painting, often formed of geometric shapes depicted in highly saturated 'fields' of colour. Stella is regarded as one of the pioneers of this new approach, though many included under the Minimalism banner rejected the categorisation of their work as a cohesive movement as such. Stella struck out on his career path as an artist largely independently and with a clear, singular vision for the work he wanted to create. Having been influenced early on by the precise, tonal works of European modernists like the Bauhaus' Josef Albers, Stella very deliberately chose to move away and past the dense, gestural approach to abstraction made famous by Abstract Expressionists like Jackson Pollok. In antithesis, his work sought to elevate the picture as object, as opposed to the picture as cipher for something tangible in the physical world, or as representative of the artist's own interior life and emotions. Where the previous school had sought to capture feeling and painterly movement in the immediate post-war years, Stella and his contemporaries were cool and detached. Lyon & Turnbull are pleased to offer three examples of his works in print for sale. Though painting (and latterly sculpture) dominated his output, print making was an integral and significant area of his practise. Indeed it became one of his primary interests for the 60s and 70s, to the extent that he installed a print works in his studio in 1973. Here he experimented, often layering, as here in 'Tuftonboro', two techniques in one; in this case lithography and screenprinting. Stella's work is featured in the collections of important institutions around the world. In 1970, he became the youngest artist to be the subject of a major solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. In 2009, Stella was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Obama.Provenance: The John Calcutt Collection

He completed his formal education at the Courtauld Institute of Art (University of London) in 1974, gaining an MA in Realism in European Art c. 1830-1860. Although John spent 44 years working within higher education institutions, he was no stuffy academic and loved sharing his deep and wide knowledge with students. He was an inspirational teacher, writer and critic who significantly shaped and informed the contemporary visual art scene in Scotland and beyond, nurturing the careers of many of the countries most celebrated and critically acclaimed artists. His collecting interests included contemporary visual art, books and music, with a particular passion for Pop Art; his home a homage to Jasper Johns, Frank Stella and Andy Warhol.Provenance: The John Calcutt Collection

Her interior was overseen by the French architect Roger-Henri Expert and designed in the high Art Deco and Streamline Modern manner. The dining room was lined with 12 pillars and 38 columns of Lalique glass and the children's room was designed by author Jean de Brunhoff who decorated it with images of Babar the Elephant. A COLLECTION OF MODERN SCOTTISH ENAMEL EARRINGS comprising three pairs of earrings, each with black ground enamel, one disc shaped with gold baton inlay; an interchangeable pair of black and white zig zag with removable central domed stud (comes with smaller studs to replace), and a pair of curved with white snake skin detail, all in original boxes (8) INTRODUCTION TO JEWELLERY SECTION Maureen Edgar is arguably Scotland's most important enameller and while her name is not yet known to as many collectors as it should the appreciation of her work is becoming widespread. Her work can be found in the collections of The National Museum Scotland, Incorporation of Goldsmiths of the City of Edinburgh, The Goldsmiths Company London and likely the largest grouping within The Pearson Silver Collection. Artistic from an early age, Maureen Edgar started her art training with an evening class at Glasgow School of Art and was latterly accepted to Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee. Here she moved from painting to the silver and jewellery department where she found her passion. Like many of the period, she trained under the eye of Bernard Harrington. It was in 1977 that she applied, and to her own surprise, was accepted to the Royal College of Art and would further her training under Gerald Benney for three years. In Maureen's own words about working with Benney 'This was my biggest opportunity'. Building from her training at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art this would prove to be the final link in the chain turning Maureen fully into an enameller. Her work was almost immediately a success and even early in her career she was gaining a reputation and large commissions. This early success perhaps explains the relative rarity of her jewellery as she immediately found work in larger commissions such as goblets, eggs and napkin rings. Sadly, due to ill health her career was cut short prematurely and she retired from working in 1999, with her final commission being the cruet set for The Millennium Collection of silver for Bute House. For a full biography and illustrations of much of her important work see 'Designer British Silver' John Andrew and Derek Styles page 194 - 199.

Ca.2000 BC. This type of very interesting stone statuette, sometimes referred to as Bactrian princesses or Bactrian goddesses, is a very distinctive and rare object of the prehistoric civilization of Bactria. These seldom exceed 20cm in height and they are composite in nature, with the head (and also often a cap or other headdress) being separate from the body. They are made up with two or more different types of stone; usually green chlorite or steatite for the body, with heads of white limestone and occasionally in green chlorite.Bactra was the Greek name for the area of modern Balkh, in what is now northern Afghanistan and Margiana was the Greek name for the Persian satrapy of Margu, the capital of which was Merv, in today's Turkmenistan. This civilisation was contemporary with the European Bronze Age, and was characterised by monumental architecture, social complexity and extremely distinctive cultural artefacts that vanish from the record a few centuries after they first appear. Trade appears to have been important, as Bactrian artefacts appear all over the Persian Gulf as well as in the Iranian Plateau and the Indus Valley. Pictographs on seals have been argued to indicate an independently-developed writing system.Religion may have been based around deities represented by pieces such as this. However, they are extremely rare.. Their significance is unclear. Fine Condition, intact. Size: 10.5cm x9cm (4.13 x 3.54 in); 700gr; Provenance: Private collection of an Oxford professional, formed in the 1970s-1990s on the UK art market, All Items sold by Pax Romana Auctions come with professional Certificate of Authenticity.

Original vintage travel advertising poster published for the "Venezia Graphic Design Conference" and used by the Italian Tourist Office (ENIT) to promote Venice. This superb design by Cassandre, with the colors and images reflected in the lagoon, perfectly render the magical and romantic atmosphere of the city. Cassandre, pseudonym of Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron (1901- 1968) was a French painter, commercial poster artist, and typeface designer. He was born Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron in Kharkiv, Ukraine, to French parents. As a young man, Cassandre moved to Paris, where he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and at the Academie Julian. The popularity of posters as advertising afforded him an opportunity to work for a Parisian printing house. Inspired by cubism as well as surrealism, he earned a reputation with works such as Bucheron (Woodcutter), a poster created for a cabinetmaker that won first prize at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes. Cassandre became successful enough that with the help of partners he was able to set up his own advertising agency called Alliance Graphique, serving a wide variety of clients during the 1930s. He is perhaps best known for his posters advertising travel, for clients such as the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits. His creations for the Dubonnet wine company were among the first posters designed in a manner that allowed them to be seen by occupants in moving vehicles. His posters are memorable for their innovative graphic solutions and their frequent denotations to such painters as Max Ernst and Pablo Picasso. In addition, he taught graphic design at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs and then at the Ecole d'Art Graphique. With typography an important part of poster design, the company created several new typeface styles. Cassandre developed Bifur in 1929, the sans serif Acier Noir in 1935, and in 1937 an all-purpose font called Peignot. In 1936, his works were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City which led to commissions from Harper's Bazaar to do cover designs. Good condition, faint foxing and creases in margins. Country: Italy, year of printing: 1951, designer: A. M. Cassandre, size (cm): 100x62.5

Lot 1602

Original vintage advertising poster by Rene Gruau for the 1965 Moulin Rouge cabaret show Frisson featuring 40 Doriss Girls and the world's most famous French Cancan. Moulin Rouge is a cabaret in Paris, France. The original house, which burned down in 1915, was co-founded in 1889 by Charles Zidler and Joseph Oller, who also owned the Paris Olympia. Close to Montmartre in the Paris district of Pigalle on Boulevard de Clichy in the 18th arrondissement, it is marked by the red windmill on its roof. The closest métro station is Blanche. Moulin Rouge is best known as the birthplace of the modern form of the can-can dance. Originally introduced as a seductive dance by the courtesans who operated from the site, the can-can dance revue evolved into a form of entertainment of its own and led to the introduction of cabarets across Europe. Today, the Moulin Rouge is a tourist attraction, offering musical dance entertainment for visitors from around the world. The club's decor still contains much of the romance of fin de siècle France.René Gruau (4 February 1909 – 31 March 2004) was a fashion illustrator whose exaggerated portrayal of fashion design through painting has had a lasting effect on the fashion industry. Because of Gruau's inherent skills and creativity, he contributed to a change in the entire fashion industry through the new pictures that represented the already popular designs created by designers in the industry. The benefits, including economic stimulation and enhancement of advertising are still present in the industry today via a new way of fashion illustration, fashion photography. Gruau became one of the best known and favorite artists of the haute couture world during the 1940s and 50s working with Femina, Marie Claire, L'Officiel, L'Album Du Figaro and an assortment of “high-style” magazines. Gruau’s artwork is recognized and commended internationally in some of Paris and Italy's most prestigious art museums including the Louvre in Paris and the Blank in Italy. in addition to his international fame and recognition, "Gruau's artwork is known for its timeless and enduring style". Good condition, tape marks in top and bottom margins. Backed on paper. Country: France, year of printing: 1965, designer: Rene Gruau, size (cm): 60.5x40

Lot 2809

Original vintage advertising poster published to promote an exhibition of El Greco's works organised by the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio and touring the cities of Madrid, Washington and Dallas between 1982 and 1983. Doménikos Theotokópoulos (October 1541 – 7 April 1614), most widely known as El Greco ("The Greek"), was a Greek painter, sculptor and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. "El Greco" was a nickname, a reference to his Greek origin, and the artist normally signed his paintings with his full birth name in Greek letters often adding the word Cretan. El Greco was born in the Kingdom of Candia, which was at that time part of the Republic of Venice, and the center of Post-Byzantine art. He trained and became a master within that tradition before traveling at age 26 to Venice, as other Greek artists had done. In 1570 he moved to Rome, where he opened a workshop and executed a series of works. During his stay in Italy, El Greco enriched his style with elements of Mannerism and of the Venetian Renaissance taken from a number of great artists of the time, notably Tintoretto. In 1577, he moved to Toledo, Spain, where he lived and worked until his death. In Toledo, El Greco received several major commissions and produced his best-known paintings. El Greco's dramatic and expressionistic style was met with puzzlement by his contemporaries but found appreciation in the 20th century. El Greco is regarded as a precursor of both Expressionism and Cubism, while his personality and works were a source of inspiration for poets and writers such as Rainer Maria Rilke and Nikos Kazantzakis. El Greco has been characterized by modern scholars as an artist so individual that he belongs to no conventional school. He is best known for tortuously elongated figures and often fantastic or phantasmagorical pigmentation, marrying Byzantine traditions with those of Western painting. Good condition, small paper losses in top corners. Country: Spain, year of printing: 1982, designer: El Greco, size (cm): 68.5x36

Original vintage travel advertising poster printed for the Office of French Tourism and featuring an interpretive rendering of lithograph executed by Charles Sorlier, from a detail of the preliminary sketch of the ceiling of the Paris Opera by Marc Chagall. This fragment is a tribute to Berlioz for Romeo and Juliet which also includes pictures of the Place de la Concorde and the Arc de Triomphe. Marc Zakharovich Chagall (/??????l/ sh?-GAHL;[3][nb 1] born Moishe Zakharovich Shagal;[4] 6 July [O.S. 24 June] 1887 – 28 March 1985) was a Russian-French artist of Belarusian Jewish origin. An early modernist, he was associated with several major artistic styles and created works in virtually every artistic format, including painting, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramic, tapestries and fine art prints. Art critic Robert Hughes referred to Chagall as "the quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth century" (though Chagall saw his work as "not the dream of one people but of all humanity"). According to art historian Michael J. Lewis, Chagall was considered to be "the last survivor of the first generation of European modernists". For decades, he "had also been respected as the world's pre-eminent Jewish artist". Using the medium of stained glass, he produced windows for the cathedrals of Reims and Metz, windows for the UN and the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Jerusalem Windows in Israel. He also did large-scale paintings, including part of the ceiling of the Paris Opéra. Before World War I, he travelled between Saint Petersburg, Paris, and Berlin. During this period he created his own mixture and style of modern art based on his idea of Eastern European Jewish folk culture. He spent the wartime years in Soviet Belarus, becoming one of the country's most distinguished artists and a member of the modernist avant-garde, founding the Vitebsk Arts College before leaving again for Paris in 1922. Poor condition, poster was cut on sides, paper losses and tears in margins, reinforced with water soluble brown tape on reverse. Country: France, year of printing: 1964, designer: Marc Chagall, size (cm): 63.5x78 (Horizontal)
