Lot 389

2nd-4th century AD. A superbly sculpted larger-than-life sized carved schist bodhisattva head, clean-shaven apart from a neat pointed moustache, with serene and contemplative expression; the hair carved in wavy bands drawn back from the forehead and held by a braided browband, with two lateral hanks separated and tied above; the facial features sharp and carefully portrayed with small pursed mouth and heavy-lidded almond eyes, urna to the brow; the ears with long lobes pierced to accept earrings; mounted on a custom-made stand. 49.5 kg, 65cm including stand (25 1/2"). Property of a London gentleman; previously with central London gallery; imported from the USA in the early 1970s; formerly with Mahboubian Gallery, New York since the late 1960s; accompanied by copy of an early 1970s black and white photograph. Gandhara was an ancient political unit of the Peshawar valley, which covered the territory between the valley of the River Swat and the Potohar plateau regions of modern Pakistan and a portion of modern Afghanistan. It was controlled from its principal cities including Kapisa (modern Bagram), Pushkalavati, Puru?apura (modern Peshawar) and latterly Udabhandapura (Hund) on the River Indus. The name occurs in the Rig Veda and in the Behistun inscription which lists the territories of the Achaemenid king Darius I (519 BC"). Herodotus's Histories mentions it also as one of the territories which paid tribute to Darius. Several characters in the the Mahabharata and the Ramayana are associated with the kingdom. In 327 BC, Alexander the Great conquered Gandhara among many other Indian satellites of the Persian Empire which had refused to submit to Macedonian rule. Oxyartes was appointed to the position of ruler of Gandhara by Alexander in 326 BC. The Kushan period is considered the Golden Age of the Gandharan kingdom. In the Peshawar Valley are many ruins of Buddhist stupas and religious foundations of this period. The characteristic Gandharan art flourished and the output of statuary reached its height during the reign of the Kushan king Kanishka the Great (128–151 AD"). Buddhist art spread from Gandhara to other parts of Asia and Gandhara became a 'holy land' of Buddhism which attracted Chinese pilgrims. An important Buddhist shrine made Peshawar a famed object of pilgrimage until the 7th century AD. In the 5th century, Hunnic invasion entailed a persecution of Buddhists and the resulting gradual return to the Hindu faith. Islam was introduced to the region by Arab powers from the 9th century and in the early 11th Gandhara fell to the Ghaznavid Empire. Very fine condition.

Arthur Kitching (British, 1912-1981), Scarborough Street, initials and dated (19)69 l.r., gouache, 37 by 24cm, mountedArthur Kitching (1912 – 1981)Kitching painted with purity and intelligence. He was a painter of the everyday that he knew, yet was outstanding in his ability to find grand subjects in this everyday. His natural talent was for decorative colour, and he understood well the urban life and geography of Yorkshire. His main subject was always people in landscape, along with portraits. In the years around 1970 Kitching produced a mass of quickly drawn and coloured gouaches of his family and their friends. They are an extension of his constant drawing of nudes from imagination, and have a direct simplicity and decorative colour that make them his most attractive work.© Arthur Kitching, by David Fraser Jenkins, art historian and keeper of the Modern Collection at the Tate Gallery. Robert Bryan Charles Neale M.B.E.  R.A. (British, 1930), 'Armour', sculpture in metal, mounted on a circular concrete plinth, full height including plinth approximately 183cm, (excluding a loose hemet section)Note: Born in the Isle of Man capital, Douglas, Kneale studied painting at the Douglas School of Art, from which he graduated in 1947, and then moved to London, to study at the Royal Academy Schools. In 1948, he won the Rome Prize and spent some time living in Italy. During the 1950s, he learned welding, and in 1960 took to sculpture in preference to painting, and became a teacher. He has taught at Hornsey College of Art and Design, and from 1963 until his retirement from teaching in 1995 he taught sculpture at the Royal College of Art.  He was also Master and later Professor of Sculpture at the Royal Academy between 1982 and 1990.  In addition to his teaching, numerous exhibitions of his own painting and sculpture work have been held since 1953 and his works are displayed in countries such as Australia, Brazil, New Zealand and the United States.  In the USA, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City includes examples of his work amongst its public collections. He was awarded a Leverhulme Trust Prize in 1952, as well as the Daily Express Young Painters' Prize (1955) and an Arts Council Purchase Award (1969).  After a successful solo show at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1966, Kneale became the first abstract sculptor to be elected a Royal Academician in 1974. He accepted the honour only on the condition that he be allowed to curate a show of contemporary sculpture which resulted in a groundbreaking survey of some of the period's most exciting sculptors.Kneale is the younger brother of the screenwriter Nigel Kneale (1922-2006), best known for his Quatermass television serials. Kneale illustrated the covers for Penguin Books' releases of his elder brother's Quatermass scripts in 1960.  He was also responsible for a painting of a lobster from which BBC special effects designers Bernard Wilkie and Jack Kine drew their inspiration for the Martian creatures they constructed for Quatermass and the Pit (1958-59).He was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 2019 New Year Honours for services to British Art. (Source: Wikipedia) Note: Artist Resale Rights apply

The work included embroideries to complete the decorative scheme. Walter Shaw Sparrow illustrated the bedcover from this set (now with The National Museums of Scotland) in The Modern Home (published in 1908).This embroidered panels formed part of a suite of hangings worked by Mackenzie's wife Jessie and her friends in 1893 and remained at Earlshall until the contents were sold in 1983. The larger hangings from this suite were sold in these rooms (see 'Paul Reeves: Textiles as Art', 23rd February 2017, lots 42 and 43). Sir William Bruce built the castle in 1546. He and his men killed Richard Cameron, a noted Covenanter, at Airds Moss. The magazines The Studio, Art et Decoration and Dekorative Kunst all regularly featured his work. Benson’s lamp with a finned copper shade as a good example of modern design. The Studio Yearbook of 1906 praised his experiments with reflectors, as in this example. DYLAN1966 American music poster designed by Milton Glaser, published by CBS records,84 x 56cmAfter suffering serious injuries in a motorcycle accident in 1966, singer-songwriter Bob Dylan was rendered bedridden and rumoured to be dead. To generate positive publicity for his forthcoming album, 'Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits', CBS Records commissioned Milton Glaser to design a special poster to be packaged with the album. Taking inspiration from a Marcel Duchamp self-portrait, Glaser depicted Dylan in profile, his abundant curly hair rendered in saturated colours that stood out in high contrast from the white ground.
