These wallpaper squares were probably commissioned by her and sold through the shop along with designs by Edward Bawden.Modern Textiles was founded to promote good design and to sell fabrics and other items, including wallpaper, pr

New Kingdom to 30th Dynasty, 1300-350 BC. A restrung necklace of cylindrical, disc- and spherical shaped beads with modern clasp and six interstitial amulets comprising: two scarabs, each with hieroglyphic text to the underside, one with cartouche of Pharaoh Tuthmosis; a blue wedjat eye bead with applied black pigment trails to the pupil and brow; a head of the god Bes with feather headdress; a large djed pillar with pierced dorsal bar; an amulet of the god Shu, kneeling with both arms raised. Walter Steinberg has been a well-known figure at fairs, sales and events for many years. Born in 1922 in Philadelphia, Walter has had a life-long passion for collecting. A long-time resident in London, he has now retired to New York and decided that the time has come to pass on the antiquities and coins he has collected over his lifetime. Walter acquired coins and artefacts that interested him, so his collection, although containing many lovely examples, also contains many affordable specimens. Much of the material has been unavailable to the market for 30 to 50 years. Walter hopes that the items he collected will now find new homes with the next generation of collectors. 17 grams, 61cm (24"). Ex Walter Steinberg collection; acquired London art market, 1960s-1970s. Fine condition.
Mainly Late Period, 664-332 BC. A restrung four-strand necklace of tubular and discoid glazed composition beads with a black glazed composition spacer block; modern clasp. 26 grams, 52cm (20 1/2"). UK art market, acquired prior to 1980; formerly early 20th century UK collection. Fine condition.
Northern Wei Dynasty, 386-534 AD. A rectangular terracotta brick with recess to the upper face enclosing a robed Buddha figure with right hand supporting a bowl at the midriff, left hand at the side, leaf-shaped nimbus behind the head, standing on a lotus-petal dais. The Northern Wei style is noted for its obsession with robes, which are often elaborate and fall in two tiers of parallel folds. The figures are elongated and angular, the face is squarish, set on a long neck, and the eyes are also elongated with no pupils; there is an enigmatic smile on the lips. Some elements of decoration show influence from earlier Gandharan art that has developed into a recognizably Chinese style that continues to the modern day. 3.6 kg, 32cm (12 1/2"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired before 2000. Fine condition.
4th-3rd century BC. MARK MATVEEVICH ANTOKOLSKY (RUSSIAN 1843-1902)Bust of Mephistopheles, bronze with medium brown and green patinaheight: 24.5 cm (9 5/8 in.)inscribed Antokolsky on back of base LOT NOTES:Following the glowing acclaim of Mark Antokolsky’s marble sculpture Mephistopheles, which entered the collection of the Hermitage Museum in 1886, a mere three years after its completion, the artist produced bronze versions of the figure’s bust to capitalize on the project’s success. At the onset, Antokolsky turned to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Faust for inspiration for the figure, which he referred to as the equally powerful counterpoint to his earlier sculpture of Christ. Lacking clothing or any identifiable characteristics tying him to a particular period or place, the artist nevertheless epitomized the demon of the modern age. In an 1883 letter to E. G. Mamontova, Antokolsky wrote: “Mephistopheles is a product of all the ages, and ours in particular. We can say that I dreamed up this being, that this is purely my fantasy, or you could ask where I saw such a being? Yes, no one sees him like this, but we sense his breathing, feel his monstrous paw pressing on our chest, sense our inability to cry out, in a word, we see the nightmare."PLEASE NOTEIf you will be bidding live on auction day, please note that Session I of the Auction (Russian Fine & Decorative Art), starts at 10:00 AM New York Time and goes from Lot 1 through Lot 234.
