Lot 761

The following seventeen lots (lots 761-777) are from the studio of the artist John Theodore Harrison 1914-2002. John Theodore Harrison was born on 30 August 1914 in Woking, Surrey, and was educated at Canford School. He was the only son of Thomas Dalkin Harrison, a Civil Servant, resident at Moreton, Chislehurst Road, Sidcup, Kent. John Harrison matriculated from Christ Church, Oxford on 10 November 1933 and gained a second class honours in Modern History in Trinity Term 1936. The degree of BA was conferred on 20 November 1937 and that of MA, which required no further residence or study in Oxford, in absence on 16th December 1950. He studied at l`Ecole de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris and thereafter was then resident in North Africa (Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco) during the war years where the larger part of these paintings were executed. There is a record of an exhibition held by the artist in 1946 at an unspecified location (see Combat No 198 19.1.46) The art works included in this sale show a great vitality and freedom and are at times reminiscent of the works of Matthew Smith, Duncan Grant and Christopher Wood. In some of the works in this collection the artist has signed his work `Edmund Elada`, evidently a nome-de-plume. We are grateful to David Buckman and Merian Jump for their assistance with the cataloguing of this collection.
