Pre-Columbian, Central Mexico, Guerrero region, ca. 300 to 100 BCE. A Chontal maskette expertly carved from a grey stone with green undertones and mottled beige inclusions. The mask presents an angular form and a flat back, its visage with features in relief including coffee bean shaped eyes, rounded cheek bones, prominent brows, a long aquiline nose, puckered lips, and narrow ear phalanges pierced at the lobes with additional perforations behind temples. Custom block mount. Size: 4" W x 5.5" H (10.2 cm x 14 cm); 4.5" W x 7.5" H (11.4 cm x 19 cm) with mountThe Guerrero region of modern-day southwestern Mexico was the center of the Mezcala and Chontal stone carving traditions. While Mezcala artists are known for their abstract, geometric style, the Chontal sculptors imbued their artworks with more naturalism. Although their stonework stems from the Preclassic period, ca. 300 to 100 BCE, later Mesoamerican peoples clearly cherished Chontal portable sculptures as heirlooms. Chontal creations have been unearthed in ritual caches at Templo Mayor, the principle temple of the fifteenth-century Aztecs of Tenochititlan (Mexico City). What's more, legendary 20th century modernists such as Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, and Miguel Covarrubias appreciated the minimalist qualities of Chontal art. Covarrubias went so far as to compare it to the Cycladic style of ancient Greece. Scholars believe that such masks were tied to funerary bundles of the noble elite; however, the smaller scale suggests it may have been attached to clothing. Note the four perforations at the peripheries for such attachment. Provenance: Ex-Dr. G. Hermann collection, Denver, CO acquired before 1980 Condition: On verso are linear depressions most likely inherent to the original stone. Chip to upper edge on back side. Old abrasions beneath it. Otherwise excellent. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #118960

* JOSEPH DAVIE,HEROoil on canvas178.5cm x 150cmFramedNote: Joseph Davie was born in Glasgow in 1965. He studied at Glasgow School of Art during the 80's, when testosterone and figurative painting seemed to go hand in hand. What is so different about Davie is the subtlety and ambiguity of his work. Georgina Coburn (the freelance arts correspondent) has described his work as lyrical, enigmatic, edgy, dreamlike and compelling. She writes : ''Gently provocative Davie delights in the surreal juxtaposition of ideas and materials. The meeting of contradictory characters, cultures or visual elements such as colour, pattern or form, create intriguing dialogues in his work. Davie's wonderfully ambivalent zinc and copperplate etchings, watercolours, oils on canvas and mixed media works inspire an imaginative response. His whole approach to the figure is brilliantly subdued and refreshing. He conveys a sense of the monumental and iconic not through obvious physical scale but in terms of human aspiration.'' His work is in numerous public collections including Glasgow Museum of Modern Art, The Kelvingrove Museum, Historic Scotland and the BBC.

HENRY KHUDYAKOV (RUSSIAN-AMERICAN B. 1930)Untitled (21 CA), 1978-2003mixed media on a mannequinheight: 184 cm (72 1/2 in.)signed and inscribed on base, shoes, and inside of the jacket, dated with detailed stages of completion on the shoes and clothingLOT NOTESFew materials lie outside of Henry Khudyakov`s reach – glitter, phosphorescent paint, Band-Aids, computer printouts, and construction paper all regularly make an appearance in the multifaceted, and often unexpected, work of the renegade artist. As one critic noted " Partially as a result of his cosmic outlook, no canvas can be too bright for [the] creator. … His works cannot be summed up casually; although, many of them can be connected to each other as cells of a living organism. It's a creation of a new dynamic mysterious cosmos from customary objects. It's better not only to see his creations but be surrounded by them, feel them, and wear as a perfume those simple but surprisingly fresh images." As other Fluxus artists, Khudyakov envisioned and attempted to imbue the everyday with art – elevating the humbles of materials to fine art status.Henry Khudyakov`s works can be found in private and museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
DUCHAMP MARCEL: (1887-1968) French-born American Painter, Writer and Chess Player. A.L.S., Marcel, one page, 4to, n.p., 25th October 1947, to [Charles R.] Hulbeck (Richard Huelsenbeck). Duchamp informs his friend that `The pictures are not back and I am afraid won´t be back for some months', continuing to explain 'Schweizer, the representative here, is in France and is coming back in a few weeks or days. He will have exact information about the return of the shipment. Don´t worry'. A letter of interesting association. The upper edge of the letter is very slightly irregularly trimmed, otherwise VG Richard Huelsenbeck (1892-1974) German Psychoanalyst, Poet, Writer & Drummer, founder of the Berlin Dada Group. Huelsenbeck was continually investigated by the Nazi authorities from 1933, although managed to emigrate to the United States in 1936. Once there he changed his name to Charles R. Hulbeck and practiced medicine and psychoanalysis in Long Island, New York. Huelsenbeck's autobiography, Memoirs of a Dada Drummer, gives detailed accounts of his interactions with many key figures of the movement, including Duchamp. Duchamp's work is associated with Cubism, conceptual art and Dada and the artist is considered by many critics to be one of the most important artists of the 20th century. He advised modern art collectors and other prominent figures, thereby helping to shape the tastes of Western art and challenged conventional thought about artistic processes and rejected the emerging art market. Duchamp famously dubbed a urinal art and named it Fountain, however he produced relatively few artworks while remaining mostly aloof of the avant-garde circles of his time. Duchamp went on to pretend to abandon art and devote the rest of his life to chess, whilst secretly continuing to make art.
TOULOUSE-LAUTREC HENRI DE: (1864-1901) French Painter & Illustrator. A.L.S., T-Lautrec, three pages, 8vo, Paris, n.d. (1898?), to 'Mon cher Theo' (van Rysselberghe), in French. The artist informs his friend that he has returned from Spain, where he met Dario, and is now leaving for London in four days, asking van Rysselberghe to supply him with the address of a dealer in London where he can buy some items. Toulouse-Lautrec also enquires as to when his correspondent will be in Paris next as they must go to see a home when it is finished. In concluding he remarks that a mutual acquaintance will be going to Brussels shortly and will meet van Rysselberghe. Autograph letters of Toulouse-Lautrec are rare as a result of his untimely death at the age of 36. One slight paperclip rust stain to the first page, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG Theo van Rysselberghe (1862-1926) Belgian Neo-Impressionist Painter who played a pivotal role in the European art scene at the turn of the 20th century. Co-founder of Les XX (1883). Rysselberghe had first met Toulouse-Lautrec in 1887 and was highly appreciative of his talent. Toulouse-Lautrec's family were Anglophiles and, though not as fluent as he pretended to be, the artist spoke English well enough to travel to London, exhibiting works at Goupil's Gallery in May 1898. Whilst in London Toulouse-Lautrec made posters, including the 'Confetti' poster, and the bicycle advert 'La Chaine Simpson'. It was at this time that he also met and befriended Oscar Wilde. Toulouse-Lautrec immersed himself in the colourful and theatrical life of Paris in the late 19th century, allowing himself to produce a collection of enticing, elegant and provocative images of the modern, and often decadent, life of those times. He is among the best-known painters of the Post-Impressionist period, along with Cezanne, Van Gogh and Gauguin.
