Remarkable performance from the 493bhp supercharged V8, a folding hardtop, classic looks, outstanding specification and just 29,000 miles from new. Released in 2002 following five years of development, the R230 series SL Roadster was a high-performance luxury convertible produced between 2002 and 2008 representing a harmonious blend of opulence and power. Painstakingly modelled on a state-of-the-art supercomputer which enabled the designers to analyse every curve and line, it looked utterly sensational with an air of barely contained aggression that gave it huge road presence. Packed full of sophisticated electronic driver aids which made it immensely safe but still fun to drive, it was an instant success and is widely considered to be the best-looking Mercedes for many years. It remains an iconic symbol of Mercedes' commitment to combining luxury and performance, appealing to those who seek the best of both worlds in a grand tourer. In late 2003, the stunning SL55 AMG was introduced causing shockwaves in the early-2000s performance car market with near-supercar levels of acceleration and handling, packaged in a comfortable, elegant convertible geared towards touring capability. Seriously powerful and impressively fast, the supercharged 5.4-litre V8 was rated at 493bhp with a stump-pulling 520 lbs.ft of torque. The cars were fitted with an uprated 5-speed automatic featuring AMG's 'Speedshift', and there were a number of trim differences including uprated seats and the SL55 sat on a set of striking, multi-spoke AMG alloys.First registered on the 09/06/2003, this SL55 is finished in Obsidian Black over Exclusive Black and Anthracite Leather punctuated by ‘AMG aluminium’ inlays on the door cards and centre console. The options list in 2003 was packed full of state-of-the-art equipment and, it would appear in this case, most of the boxes had been ticked including:220 - Parktronic System404/405 Multi-contour Seats415 Glass Roof with ambient lighting487 - ABC Suspension (Active Body Control)618 - Bi-Xenon Headlamps772 - AMG Styling Package -Front Spoiler, Side Skirt810 - Premium Sound System819 - CD Changer860 - TV-Tuner Analog873 - Seat Heater for Left and Right Front Seats875 - Heated Screen Wash System882 - Sensor System and Antitheft Alarm System889 - Keyless-EntryThe history file is rather nicely stocked for such a modern car and includes many receipts and a full-service history from Mercedes. The engine bay looks showroom fresh and the whole car has patently been looked after. Ballistically quick, fabulous looks, continent covering pace, yet as civilised in town as a Toyota Corolla, it's no wonder that some 'supercar' owners tend to get a little upset.Specification Make: MERCEDES-BENZ Model: SL55 AMG Year: 2003 Chassis Number: WDB2304742F054845 Registration Number: BL03 WNS Transmission: Automatic Engine Number: 11399260016415 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 29100 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: Black LeatherClick here for more details and images

Frederick Thomas Daws (British, 1878-1956)'Meurice' of Mannerhead - A Very Fine Poodle signed and dated 'FT DAWS/50' (lower right), inscribed ''Meurice' of Mannerhead' (lower left) oil on canvas board32.5 x 40.5cm (12 13/16 x 15 15/16in).Footnotes:Thomas Frederick Daws was born in London on the 2nd of October 1878. He is particularly notable for his bold, colourful palette, and his use of colour and thickly applied strokes. His technique created striking styles and produced paintings of a different character and more modern form than his contemporaries in the world of dog painting. Daws studied at the Lambeth School of Art. From 1896 at the age of just 18, he exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy – he went on to exhibit a further 11 works at the academy. He also exhibited at The Paris Salon; the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts; the Royal Institute of Oil Painters; the Walker Gallery in Liverpool; and at the Royal Society of British Artists. Perhaps Daws is most famous for his many paintings of Mrs Campbell-Inglis' Poodles from the famous Wimbledon Mannerhead Kennels, which Daws produced over 20 years. As with his contemporary, Rueben Ward Binks, he painted many of the prize dogs of well-known dog fanciers.Perhaps less well known are Daws's sculptures in bronze, including commissions again for Mrs Campbell-Inglis. He was a master of canine anatomy and his bronzes, while little known, are important records of top-winning show dogs, as are his paintings. In 1930, Daws became the main artist designing a range of porcelain champion Crufts winning dogs for Royal Doulton, which were issued from 1931 to 1968. This included the English Springer Crufts Champion, 'Dry Toast'. His paintings were also reproduced on a series of thirty-six post cards for the Spratts Dog Food Company. The Samoyed, 'Champion Loga of the Arctic', painted for Miss Marion Keyte Perry was published as the cover to the Christmas supplement to 'Our Dogs'. The painting is now in the collection of the Kennel Club together with others by the artist. His works depicting the Afghans and Mannerhead Poodles can be seen in the collection of the American Kennel Club. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A CORAL, ENAMEL AND DIAMOND BLACKAMOOR BROOCH, BY CARTIER, CIRCA 1935 the black enamelled bust wearing seed pearl earrings, on a reeded gold neck and wearing a cream enamel turban with coral corallium rubrum highlight and rose-cut diamond detail, mounted in 18K gold, signed Cartier Paris, numbered. 3.5cm long, 11.1 grams grossThe house of Cartier was founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier. A family venture soon saw the growth of Cartier and the expansion to London and New York, with subsequent generations taking the helm. Cartier has established itself as one of the world's preeminent crafters of high-end, modern, and vintage jewellery. Its watches have adorned the wrists of celebrities and royalty alike, with King Edward VII of England once referring to Cartier as the jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers. Cartier's extensive collections are known to embody revival, Art Deco, and more contemporary styles, making them a sought-after commodity for generations both past and present. Jeanne Toussaint was made Creative Director for jewellery in 1933 and she continued to work for Cartier until her retirement in 1970. The working relationship between Louis Cartier and Toussaint was very successful, with Cartier imparting his knowledge of gemstones, diamonds, settings and technique, and Toussaint bringing her joie de vivre, relentless creativity and eye for contemporary fashions. By the time she retired from Cartier in 1970, Toussaint had established her legacy as an artistic visionary; always experimenting, exploring and creating jewels for those with a worldly outlook and an eye on the future. Cartier is a notable creator of pieces depicting elaborate Blackamoor heads, which had been introduced by the Venetian form of Nardi. Blackamoor jewellery, also known as Moretti jewellery, was particularly popular during the 17th and 18th centuries and it is believed that it was originally created as amulets to ward off evil, or invasion by the Moors into Italy. Cartier first released their Blackamoor brooches in the early 1930’s. Blackamoor brooches depict black figures within the design, they are typically male with a head covering, usually a turban and covered in rich jewels and gold leaf. Early examples often have European racial features, apart from the colour. They are typically enamelled, carved from ebony or painted black to contrast with the bright colours of the embellishments. Depictions may only represent the head, or head and shoulders, facing the viewer in a symmetrical pose. The brooch on sale is a lovely example of a typical Blackamoor brooch, made of black enamel, detailing a white enamel turban and surrounded by precious gems, including coral, seed pearls and diamond. The head faces the viewer in a symmetrical pose and sits on a yellow gold reeded neck.

Évariste Carpentier (Belgian, 1845-1922), ‘A Rural Farmstead’ oil on board farmyard scene featuring chickens and ducks, a rural cottage with a smoking chimney. Signed lower right. Framed in gilt frame. Carpentier was a Belgian painter of genre scenes and animated landscapes. Admitted to the Royal Academy of Art in Antwerp, Carpentier’s career saw him divulge from an academic approach to impressionism. Carpentier established himself in Antwerp and acquired his own studio. It is there that he painted many commissioned works, which did not yet reflect his artistic personality. He began his career addressing religious topics, themes of antiquity and scenes inspired by the Dutch Golden Age painting of the 17th century. He later moved into his first studio with his painter friend Jan van Beers. In the 1880s they worked together for some time in Paris, Normandy and St. Malo in Brittany. Carpentier became a professor at the Académie Royal des Beaux-Arts in Liège in 1896, where he served as director from 1902 to 1908. Throughout his career, he won many prizes and awards at international exhibitions, both in Europe and in the United States. The work of Carpentier was largely forgotten after his death in 1922, but was rediscovered towards the latter stage of the 20th Century. His work is now viewed as an essential link in the development of modern Belgian painting. This work comes with a receipt of purchase from J. Collins & Son (2012). 29.5cm x 22cm.

An old Japanese label to the interior of the top case. Arend Louis Serné (1925-2021) was the fourth-generation owner of the firm A. Serné & Son, Costumiers, located on the Groenburgwal, Amsterdam, Netherlands, established in 1866. An avid piano player, he was also fond of modern literature, and a passionate collector of inro. He started his inro collection in the late 1970s. At that time, he entered the gallery Aalderink Oriental Art along the Spiegelgracht in Amsterdam and was immediately captivated by the beauty of inro. He began his collection with three simple specimens but hoped to own more. He remarked, “Oh that's nothing, a decent collection must be about a hundred pieces!” And collect he did. Arend was not concerned with the signature or the rarity, but with the intrinsic poetic beauty embodied in this very Japanese art form.
