Though it may be called the "Oxus civilization", apparently centered on the upper Amu Darya (Oxus River) in Bactria, most of the BMAC's urban sites are actually located in Margiana (modern Turkmenistan) on the Murghab river delta and the Kopet Dagh mountain range. There are a few later sites in northern Bactria (c. 1950-1450 BC), the territory of southern Uzbekistan, but they are mostly graveyards belonging to the BMAC-related Sapalli culture. A single BMAC site, known as Dashli, lies in southern Bactria, the territory of northern Afghanistan. Sites found further east, in southwestern Tajikistan, though contemporary with the main BMAC sites in Margiana, are only graveyards, with no urban developments associated with them. BMAC sites were discovered and named by the Soviet archaeologist Viktor Sarianidi when he was excavating in northern Afghanistan between 1969 and 1979. Sarianidi's excavations revealed numerous monumental structures in many sites, fortified by impressive walls and gates. Reports on the BMAC were mostly confined to Soviet journals. A journalist from The New York Times wrote in 2001 that during the years of the Soviet Union, the findings were largely unknown to the West until Sarianidi's work began to be translated in the 1990s.

He began his collection with three simple specimens but hoped to own more. He remarked, “Oh that's nothing, a decent collection must be about a hundred pieces!” And collect he did. Arend was not concerned with the signature or the rarity, but with the intrinsic poetic beauty embodied in this very Japanese art form.

He was a Stanford graduate, a professor at the University of Leuven, a director of the Institute of Metallurgy at the Universite Catholique de Louvain, and one of the most influential members of the faculty of applied sciences. After World War II, he made large contributions to France's post-war recovery. Robert and his wife Isabelle (1915-2010) first encountered Chinese art at the British Museum during a stay in London in the 1930s. Enamored with the style and beauty, they both decided to study and collect Chinese works of art. In 1938 they eventually began to build their collection, buying from Belgian, Parisian, and English dealers. They kept close contact with the famous English collector Sir Harry Garner (1891-1977) and noted Czech collector and expert Fritz Low-Beer (1906-1976). In 1964, the couple lent 174 objects from their collection to the Belgian city of Leuven's museum for an exhibition titled Oude kunst in Leuvens Privebezit ('Old Art in Private Collections in Leuven'), and in 1967 they lent around thirty Japanese objects to the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels for their exhibition Kunst van Japan im belgischen Privatverzameingen ('Japanese Art in Belgian Private Collections').Rinpa is a modern term that refers to a distinctive style of Japanese pictorial and applied arts that arose in the early seventeenth century and has continued through modern times. Literally meaning 'school of Korin,' Rinpa derives its name from Ogata Korin (1658-1716), a celebrated painter from Kyoto. It embraces art marked by a bold, graphic abbreviation of natural motifs, frequent reference to traditional court literature and poetry, the lavish use of expensive mineral and metallic pigments, incorporation of calligraphy into painting compositions, and innovative experimentation with new brush techniques. Transmitted by means of pattern books and manuals, the work of the Ogata Korin inspired numerous other craftsmen.Auction comparison:Compare a closely related four-case gold lacquer inro depicting two thatched shelters among bamboo, by Hara Yoyusai, with similarly rendered Rinpa style inlay in mitsuda and aogai, also taken from Korin Hyakuzu , at Bonhams, The Edward Wrangham Collection of Japanese Art, 15 May 2012, London, lot 290 (sold for GBP 22,500).

He is famous for his stenciled graffiti works, which appear in public spaces around the world. His use of stenciling developed from a need to complete a work quickly, namely to avoid being caught vandalizing by police. Between 15th June and 28th August 2023 at the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow he held his first show in 14 years: Cut & Run featuring stencils and more from his career on the street. “I’ve kept these stencils hidden away for years, mindful they could be used as evidence in a charge of criminal damage. But that moment seems to have passed, so now I’m exhibiting them in a gallery as works of art. I’m not sure which is the greater crime” each poster approximately 42cm x 30cm

Softcover. 28cm x 28cm (11" x 11") Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973) is known as the founder of Cubism. He was born in Málaga in 1881 to an artist father. The family moved to Barcelona in 1895, where Picasso enrolled at the School of Fine Arts. In the beginning of 1901, Picasso moved to Paris for the first time. The city was considered the cultural capital of Europe and attracted many aspiring artists. Soon after, he made his first sale with art dealer Berthe Weill and quickly became an influential figure in the artistic circles of Montmartre. After working in his characteristic Blue Period of 1901‒4 (as seen in Motherhood (1901)), Picasso developed his famous Cubist style in 1906/7. Together with French artist Georges Braque, Picasso extended the technique to Analytical Cubism and Synthetic Cubism (as seen in Fruit Dish, Bottle and Violin (1914)). Picasso was extremely productive during his lifetime, expanding his oeuvre to include etching, sculpture and ceramics. The Spanish artist had a profound influence on the formation of 20th-century Avant-garde art and his works can be found in many notable modern art collections around the world.

He lives and works in Brighton and Devon, UK. In January 2020 the artist was awarded the decoration of Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire or OBE. In his sculptural works, rendered in materials such as bronze and ceramic, the artist makes physical some of his more curious and eccentric propositions by transforming found objects or by playing with their scale. Taking Lewis Carroll's perspective of Wonderland, Shrigley enlarges objects and imbues them with curious proportions. Shrigley was a Turner Prize nominee in 2013, following his major mid-career retrospective ‘Brain Activity' at the Hayward Gallery, London. In September 2016, his monumental sculpture ‘Really Good' was unveiled in Trafalgar Square, London for the Fourth Plinth Commission. Lin Fengmian 林风眠 (1900 - 1991) Birds and Wisteria 紫藤小鸟 Oil on canvas Signed and mounted. 80 x 60cm (31.5” x 23.5”) Lin Fengmian was a pioneer of modernism known for his brilliant hybridization of Chinese and European styles, subjects and methods. In his role as a prominent educator, Lin laid the foundation for Chinese modern art. Throughout his long and productive life, Lin absorbed a wide array of stylistic approaches into his paintings, and was one of the earliest Chinese artists to make a serious study of European modern art along with traditional ink paintings. By 1920 Lin was working as a signboard painter in Marseilles, sketching and studying French in his spare time. Lin’s work as a sign painter would help develop the steadiness and clarity of his later brushwork. Following six months of study at the School of Fine Arts in Dijon, Lin left for Paris where he studied at the École des Beaux Arts and the studio of Fernand Cormon (1845-1924). He had a highly eventful year in Germany, where he saw the works of German Expressionists and held a one-man exhibition, married his first wife, and exhibited 42 paintings in an Exhibition of Traditional and Modern Chinese Art. Soon after, with the untimely and sudden death of his wife and first-born child, the stunned Lin’s art and outlook were transformed. He remarried in 1925 and then returned to Beijing in 1926, committed to revitalizing Chinese art through education. After serving as the first principal of the National Beijing Fine Art School he founded the Hangzhou National College of Art where he taught Western style painting to students including Zao Wou-Ki, Chu Teh-Chun, and Wu Guanzhong. Lin Fengmian’s life was marked by numerous upheavals and tragedies including the destruction of may of his works during the Sino-Japanese War and Cultural Revolution. After leaving China in 1977 to reunite with family members Lin Fengmian ultimately settled in Hong Kong where he died in 1991 at the age of 90 years old. His work can be found in many museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of New York, the Cernuschi Gallery of Asian Arts of Paris, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.
Mario Sanzone (Italian, b. 1946) Positano Oil on canvas Signed and titled by the artist Unframed 133 x 185cm (51" x 70.5") Mario Sanzone (Italian, b.1946) attended the Fine Art Academy in his native city, where he continues to live and work. After his studies, he started and has industriously continued to take part in exhibitions, both in Italy, across Europe and the USA. Sanzone is perhaps best known for his atmospheric portrayals of the Amalfi coast, which perfectly convey the richness and atmosphere of the Mediterranean. He loves to paint the towns and cities of Europe both basking in the heat of the mid-day sun, as well as the subtle twilight effects of night. His stunning original paintings have a fascinating quality. He has taken classic Impressionism and given it a fresh, modern twist, making his style truly timeless. With his vivid palette of rich blues, greens and sparkling yellows Mario Sanzone captures the beauty of The Amalfi Coast and beyond in an extraordinary way. With twinkling lights in the distance Sanzone’s original paintings offer a unique, rarely-seen perspective of his chosen enchanting locations. Sanzone’s dazzling landscapes become increasingly abstract when viewed more closely, thanks to his amazing use of light and colour and quick brushstrokes in traditional oil paints. Sanzone has always received great acclaim from critics and the public alike, especially for his luminous palette and original technique.
