BANKSY (born 1975)Gold Flag, 2007 signed in black felt-tip pen, numbered 29/112 on the reversescreenprint on gold Chromalux paper50 x 70cm (19 11/16 x 27 9/16in).with the publisher's blindstamp, Pictures on Walls, LondonFootnotes:This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Pest Control Office.Banksy, known for engaging with the political and social issues of the day, regularly uses his art to critique modern ideas inherent in our society. His satirical and often dark humour touches on key themes including; war, class, consumerism, capitalism and imperialism. In Gold Flag, Banksy directly references Joe Rosenthal's renowned photograph of U.S Soldiers raising the American Flag after seizing the island of Iwo Jima on Mount Suribachi on 9th February, 1945. The photograph, captured during world war II, won the Pulitzer Prize for Photography and was later used by sculptor, Felix de Wildon, to create the life-sized War Memorial in Virginia dedicated to all US marines who lost their lives serving their country. In Gold Flag, however, Banksy replaces the patriotic soldiers with a group of urban kids who clamber up and stand victoriously over a dilapidated car. The seizure of the prized hillside in Japan is replaced with the reclamation of a burned-out vehicle. The two girls, who proudly brandish the American flag over the car, are highlighted against a golden orb in what seems to be a world without adults. Banksy released Flags in two colours; editions of both gold and silver. The source of colour, often referred to as the sun or the moon, frames the children in an otherwise black deserted landscape. By using one singular colour, in this case gold on smooth wove metallic paper, the stark contrast creates a haunting and melancholy scene around the rebel children. Children are often a central motif in Banksy's work, used to symbolise the future as well as the severity of the issues being addressed. In Gold Flag, like in much of Banksy's art, its context is open to interpretation with some speculating that the children represent America's youth, still ambitious to achieve the 'American Dream'. Others suggest it might be a comment on the amount of money spent on war, leaving millions of men, women and children unsupported in ghettos or even a nod to the moon landing. Banksy, who once described his art as a form of underclass 'revenge' that allows power to be taken from the elite and given to the individual, once again leaves it up to the viewer to decide its meaning. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Wallis (John, 1616-1703). ‘A Collection of Letters and other Papers, intercepted in Cipher, during the late warres in England. Deciphered by John Wallis D. D. Professor of Geometry in the University of Oxford. Being a Transcript of a like Collection presented by him to the Bodleyan Library, in the University of Oxford', 1 July 1653, holograph manuscript in brown and red ink on laid paper (with stylised ‘Pot II’ watermark containing initials ‘EDC’), pp. [24] 1-221 [i.e. 223] + initial blank and 32 rear blanks, with box-rules, pagination and catch-words throughout, old staining to title-page, a little light browning to margins, contemporary mottled calf, twin rules gilt to spine-compartments and covers, extremities rubbed, headcap worn away, front joint cracked but firm, a few abrasions to rear cover, tips showing through, 4to (18.7 x 14 cm)Qty: (1)NOTESProvenance: 1) William Wallis, great-great-grandson of John Wallis, inscribed by him ‘I Wm Wallis had this book with some others from Mr Hayes executor to the late Taverner Wallis deceased, April 14 1784’ on the first rear blank. William wrote a lengthy biography of John, printed in the 1791 edition of John Wallis’s Sermons . For the will of Taverner (or Tavernor) Wallis, of Hampstead, Middlesex, see National Archives, Prob 11/1059/24. 2) 'No. 3 MSS of Dr Wallis’ (18th-century inscription to front pastedown). 3) John Lawson (1932-2019), bookseller. 4) Thence by descent. A substantial and highly important document in the history of cryptography, an unpublished holograph manuscript by one of the leading mathematicians of the 17th century, revealing his sui generis contribution to the science of code-breaking and to the parliamentarian cause in the English civil war. Wallis, a clergyman’s son who claimed to be self-taught in mathematics, was appointed Savilian professor of geometry at Oxford in 1649, and keeper of the university archives in 1658, remaining in both posts until his death half a century later. He was one of the founding members of the Royal Society, and his published works, including Arithmetica infinitorum (1655), Mechanica (1670-71), and A Treatise of Algebra (1685) have established his reputation as the most important English mathematician before Newton, on whom his Arithmetica was a major influence. Wallis’s feats in cryptography provoked both hostility and admiration from his contemporaries, on the one side Thomas Hobbes, who accused him of having deciphered the King’s cabinet (captured after the battle of Naseby in 1645), and on the other, Leibniz, who made repeated attempts to persuade Wallis to reveal his methods to the wider world. In the third edition of his Clavis mathematicae (1652) William Oughtred made passing mention of Wallis’s skill in 'explicating secret writing hidden behind the most intricate ciphers', but Wallis himself appears never to have referred to such matters in print until his final years, when he included two examples of deciphered letters in the third volume of his Opera mathematica (1699, pp. 660-72), two years before he became the first to hold the position of official decipherer to the secretary of state. Leibniz saw an affinity between code-breaking and algebra, and modern scholars have identified a close relationship between Wallis’s cryptographic and mathematical techniques, in particular in the ‘ingenious series of interpolations’ in the Arithmetica by which he found an infinite series expressing the value of 4/? (Domenico Bertoloni Meli in ODNB ). Nevertheless it is an aspect of his career entirely ignored by his modern biographer, who remarks that ‘although Wallis’s deciphering activity would be a fascinating story, in the interests of space, it has been left out of this book’ (Rampelt, Distinctions of Reason and Reasonable Distinctions: The Academic Life of John Wallis (1616-1703) (2009) p. 10). The manuscript begins with a remarkable introduction in which Wallis argues for the importance of ciphers, in particular during civil wars, ‘where the intermingling of opposite parties makes it difficult if not impossible to distinguish friends & foes’ (p. [i]). He outlines the history of his involvement in code-breaking, which began over supper at the residence of his spiritual charge Lady Mary Vere. The following transcriptions of fifty-three coded letters exchanged by royalists between 1640 and 1658 are all accompanied by the deciphered text and a detailed key, except for the last four, which are left unsolved as exercises for aspirant cryptographers. Wallis revealed in an autobiography written towards the end of his life that ‘of such deciphered Letters, there be copies of divers remaining in the Archives of the Bodleyan Library in Oxford ; and many more in my own Custody, and with the Secretaries of State’ (Scriba, ‘The Autobiography of John Wallis, F.R.S’, Notes and Records of the Royal Society of London , Volume 25 Number 1, June 1970, p. 38) . His master copy of intercepted civil war letters is now Bodleian MS e Musaeo 203, and is titled ‘A Collection of Letters and Other Papers, which were at severall times intercepted, written in Cipher. Deciphered by John Wallis, Professor of Geometry in the University of Oxford. Given to the Library there, Anno Domini, 1653’. In addition to our copy Wallis made another transcript which is now Bodleian Library MS Eng. misc. e. 475, and which contains a note by Wallis recording its donation to the ‘Savilian mathematical study at Oxford’. Both the Bodleian manuscripts contain fifty-two letters; ours appears to be one he kept back for his own personal use, in light of its provenance to a descendant and the presence of a fifty-third letter evidently added later (‘A Letter from Flanders intercepted in May 1658’, by one Pe[ter] Townesend). The Bodleian holds a further volume by Wallis containing deciphered letters dating from 1669 to 1703 (MS Eng. misc. e. 382) and the annotation 'No. 4. Dr. Wallis's MSS' similar to that in our copy. There is also manuscript in the British Library titled ‘Letter Book of Dr. John Wallis, 1651-1701’ (Add. MS 32499), selections from which have been printed in Smith, ‘John Wallis as a Cryptographer’ ( Bull. Amer. Math. Soc., Volume 24, Number 2, 1917, pp. 82-96), some being letters from Wallis containing summaries of deciphered communications, but the coded originals (if any are present in the manuscript) are not included. In the ODNB it is implied that the present work was published by John Davys in An Essay on the Art of Decyphering (1737); in fact Davys included only Wallis’s introduction and the letter from Duke of Buckingham (the fifty-second in our manuscript) originally left unsolved. Peter Barrett (British, B. 1935) "Appaloosa Horse" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 22c Appaloosa stamp issued September 25, 1985. The cradle of the modern-day horse lies in North America, for it was here that the ancestors of the modern day horse first evolved. These ancient horses eventually migrated over existing land bridges to Europe and Asia. However, for reasons not fully understood, the horse became extinct on its native American continent during the Ice Age. The horse did not reappear on American soil again until Spanish explorers brought horses with them on their discovery journeys. Some of these horses escaped and formed wild herds which were later domesticated by the American Indians. The Nez Perce Indian tribe of Idaho domesticated, and actually preserved, what may be one of the oldest breeds of horses -- the colorful and spotted Appaloosa. Prized by the Indians for their unique markings, as well as their speed and hardiness, the Appaloosa horses were often owned exclusively by chiefs and the bravest of warriors. Interestingly, the Nez Perce Appaloosa was strikingly similar in markings to an ancient breed of horse seen in early Chinese and Persian art forms. Their ancestors probably reached Europe by way of Asia and were then taken to Mexico by Spanish explorers, eventually migrating north to the Nez Perce Indians. Although it is likely that the purity of the Appaloosa has been preserved through centuries of migration, the horse was not recognized as an official breed until 1938. Today, the beautiful Appaloosa horse is one of America's most popular pleasure and show horses. Image Size: 12 x 10 in. Overall Size: 18.5 x 16.25 in. Unframed. (B09727)

Paul Calle (American, 1928 - 2010) and Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "1920s - Art Deco" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. Celebrate the Century Series 32 Art Deco Style stamp issued May 28, 1998. The surge toward modernism in the 1920s was evident not only in personal dress and mannerisms -- featuring raccoon coats, long cigarette holders and hip-flasks -- but in architecture and interior design as well, which changed from traditional, richly-carved ornamentation to sleek, simple geometric patterns. The speed and efficiency of mass production influenced builders and furniture makers who strived to create modern as well as functional new designs. The challenge was to achieve harmony between technology, practicality and aesthetics, elements that appeared often in the 1920's Art Deco Style of architecture. A classic example is New York City's spectacular Chrysler Building. Designed by William Van Alen, construction of this skyscraper was begun in 1926 and completed in 1930. Geometric patterns predominate in the building's decorative facade and interior. One of the first skyscrapers to sheath large surfaces with stainless steel, the Chrysler Building features automobile icons in the frieze on the setback of the tower's base. The stately spire, decorated with a distinctive sunburst pattern, presents a striking contrast against the Manhattan skyline. The building's pierless corners and classic design typify 1920's modernism. Art Deco architecture continued well into the 1930s, as exemplified by New York's RCA Building and the Empire State Building. Image Size: 17.75 x 13.25 in. Overall Size: 23.25 x 16 in. Unframed. ca.900-600 BC. Etruscan. Bronze cast figure of the demigod Hercle in an abstract, naïve style. The god is depicted standing in a quasi-contrapposto pose. He is naked, save for his characteristic lionskin over his left arm and the club he holds in his right hand. Hercle is the Etruscan equivalent of Herakles/Hercules, and he played a major role in Etruscan religion, where he was worshipped as an important god in his own right, rather than as simply a hero, as he was amongst the Greeks and the Romans. The Etruscans were an Italic people who occupied the area of modern Tuscany and neighbouring regions in Italy in the pre-Roman period, before coming into conflict and eventually being conquered by Rome. Excellent condition; beautiful patina. On a custom stand. Size: L:105mm / W:45mm ; 60g; Provenance: From the private collection of a Central London gentleman; previously in a collection formed on the UK/European art market formed in the 1980s.

Lot 316

C. 100 AD or later. Roman style. Fresco fragment depicting an elaborate mythological scene. In the center field, a female figure, probably Ceres, goddess of agriculture, sits surrounded by other human and animal figures. Beside her is a bucket of fruit, symbolising agricultural plenty, while in front of her (left) is a deer, reflecting plenteous hunting. A male figure, perhaps a woodland god, stands behind her, while a god with an eagle, probably Jupiter stands before her (right). A winged female to her side, accompanied by a lion, maybe identified either as a victory or as Cybele, an eastern nature goddess adopted into the Roman pantheon. This complex composition probably reflects the Cerealia, a major harvest festival celebrated in honor of Ceres, which took place for seven days in late April, and was accompanied by various rituals, including the tying of torches to the tails of live foxes before releasing them in the Circus Maximus, as well as extensive sporting events. Such a beautiful fresco would make a unique conversation piece in a modern collection. Excellent condition / possibly in Roman style.Size: L:500mm / W:415mm ; 11kg; Provenance: Property of a professional London art expert; previously in an old British collection.

Lot 356

Western Asiatic. Beautiful cream stone figurine of a prancing ram, with large, curving horns and stylised facial features. The precise significance identity of the animal is unclear, but it is likely that such an intricate item reflects religious beliefs, as rams are often imbued with divine powers in pre-modern societies. Excellent condition.Size: L:135mm / W:65mm ; 2.4kg; Provenance: Private collection of a London gentleman; previously in a collection formed on the UK/International art market in the 1970s.

Lot 37

C. 600 AD. Migration Period. A large iron axe featuring a broad blade with a slightly hooked bottom, flaring head, and long, circular eye. The blade features incised decoration depicting a fish within a roughly executed rectangle. The Migration Period of European history during and after the decline of the Western Roman empire saw the widespread migration of and invasions by peoples, notably Germanic tribes and the Huns, within and into the Roman Empire. Many of these warlike peoples were heavily armed and able to carve out their own kingdoms through force of arms. This sword may have belonged to a warrior from a Germanic tribe, who fought for his people’s place in the world during a brutal and savage time when might in battle was prized above all else. The fish is a symbol of Christianity, ancient and modern, and its appearance on this axe probably reflects an appeal for divine protection on the part of the owner. Excellent condition; on a custom stand.Size: L:95mm / W:140mm ; 650g.Provenance: From an old British collection, acquired on the UK art market in the 1970s.

C. 1526 - 1857 AD. Mughal Empire. An iron Katar dagger or knuckleduster comprising rectangular open grip with guard. The katar or katara is characterized by its H-shaped horizontal hand grip which results in the blade sitting above the user's knuckles, allowing for maximal force to be applied through the point. A long wedge-shaped blade projects from one short end of the grip while a shorter spike extends from the other shorter end; three further small spikes protrude from one of the long ends of the grip. The short sides of the grip are decorated with gilding with incised geometric motifs and incised chevrons can also be observed on the iron of the main blade. The Mughal Empire was an early-modern empire in South Asia stretching from the Indus basin to northern Afghanistan, Kashmir, the highlands of Assam and Bangladesh to the Deccan plateau in south India. During its expansion the Mughal military used a variety of weapons including swords, spears, bows and arrows, cannons, muskets and flintlock blunderbusses as well as knuckledusters like this example. Superb condition; on a custom-made stand. Size: L:270mm / W:65mm ; 155g; Provenance: Private Kent collection, formed in the 1980s on the UK art market.

In his early years he was a semi-professional magician and later performed close-up and cabaret magic. His interest extended to his own writings on the theme on magic: he published original tricks in most of the leading magazines and was a historian, lecturing in the UK and America. Later in life, In 2012, he authored Charles Dickens – Conjurer, Mesmerist and Showman , and in 2015 wrote another book: Signor Arvi – The Forgotten Illusionist .
