BANKSY (BRITISH, b. 1974-), PAIR OF UNFRAMED CUT & RUN EXHIBITION POSTERS 2023 pair of posters from the 2023 Banksy Cut & Run Exhibition, purchased from Glasgow's Gallery of Modern Art at the time of the exhibition, new, sealed, UNFRAMED AND STILL IN ORIGINAL WRAPPER (IMAGES JUST FOR REFERENCE)The anonymous graffiti artist known as Banksy is perhaps the most controversial street artist of today. He is famous for his stenciled graffiti works, which appear in public spaces around the world. His use of stenciling developed from a need to complete a work quickly, namely to avoid being caught vandalizing by police. Between 15th June and 28th August 2023 at the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow he held his first show in 14 years: Cut & Run featuring stencils and more from his career on the street. “I’ve kept these stencils hidden away for years, mindful they could be used as evidence in a charge of criminal damage. But that moment seems to have passed, so now I’m exhibiting them in a gallery as works of art. I’m not sure which is the greater crime” each poster approximately 42cm x 30cm

JAMES DIXON (1887–1970) Cutty Sark Oil on paper laid on board, 54.5 x 76cm (21½ x 30") Signed and inscribed 'Cutty Sark, the famous British Windjammer' Exhibited: London Auction/Desmond Fine Art, 'Contemporary Artists from Ireland' July 1990***PLEASE NOTE: Catalogue description should read 'Oil on paper laid on board'***The idea of an unmediated connection to place is most evident in the paintings of the untrained Tory Island painter James Dixon (1887-1970). After meeting the artist Derek Hill, he started painting in the late 1950s. Dixon’s images of Tory, although influenced by Hill’s practice, seem to convey an honest, engaged representation of the island. Unlike other artists of the time depicting island life, Dixon was a native islander who had spent his entire life in its environment. In Cutty Sark, Dixon has depicted a British clipper ship set against an expanse of blue sea. Dixon has faithfully rendered the elegant design of the ship with its refined hull shape, raked masts and large sail area. As with other works by Dixon he has flattened the perspective, and instead of distance horizon line, the sky and sea meet, dark grey clouds rising from the surface. He uses quick brushstrokes applied in varying directions to suggest the ocean swell, adding flecks of white paint as the waves crest and break. The ship looks small against its surroundings, the rough waves crashing off the bow as it glides through the water. There is a small section of the canvas in the bottom right-hand corner that Dixon has left unpainted, instead inscribing 'Cutty Sark, the famous British Windjammer'.James Dixon was born on Tory Island, Co. Donegal, the most remote of all Ireland’s off shore islands. Apart from an occasional visit to the mainland and one short period in the west of Ireland as a fishing instructor, Dixon spent most of his life there and was one of the most significant members of the highly regarded Tory Island school of primitive art. Dixon and other islanders painted what they saw around them in a distinctive detailed, naturalistic style: boats, the wild seas, the island and the small villages grandly named East Town and West Town. The artist Derek Hill organised exhibitions of the work of the Tory school painters, the first of which took place at the New Gallery, Belfast in 1966, with subsequent exhibitions in Dublin, Vienna and London. In 1990 a retrospective exhibition was held at the Glebe Gallery, Co. Donegal, and the Boole Library, University College Cork. James Dixon along with Alfred Wallis was also the subject of a major exhibition in 1999 that opened in IMMA before travelling to Tate St. Ives. Dixon's work is included in the collections of The Ulster Museum, The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, The Hugh Lane Gallery, Bournemouth Art Gallery as well as being well represented at Derek Hill’s Glebe House and Gallery in Churchill, Co. Donegal. Our thanks to Róisín Kennedy whose writings formed the basis of this catalogue note Condition Report: Very good condition Frame with some very minor losses to edges of corners Should read 'Oil on paper laid on board', which is typical for this artist

Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Centre Des Congres in Monaco" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Monaco Europa 1987 Modern Art - Architecture stamp issued April 23, 1987. A tiny principality with a rich history, Monaco is tucked along the French Mediterranean coastline. The nation has been at the forefront of modern trends in Europe, especially during the twentieth century. Nowhere is this better seen that in Monaco's architecture. The architectural legacy of the Grimaldi Prences is evident; ultra-modern structures are built on land reclaimed from the Mediterranean and co-exist side by side with traditional structures such as Monaco's cathedral and those found in the Palace Square area. Designed by the noted European architect Vasarely, the Centre des Congr?s complex -- complete with heliport -- occupies a stretch along the Monaco shore. The building's design represents a modern solution to the functional problems inherent in office buildings. It features a horizontally integrated structure with plenty of window area and "open" space. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B11061)

Lot 298

Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Abstract Sculpture Woman and Bird" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Spain Europa 1987 Modern Art - Architecture stamp issued May 15, 1987. Spain has been involved in every significant architectural movement and school in the last thousand years: Romanesque structures which lasted until the rise of the Gothic style of architecture in the 12th Century; the magnificent cathedrals and palaces of the Renaissance; the ornateness of the Baroque period; and the present day Art Nouveau architecture. Spain's architectural traditions are indeed rich and varied, and Spanish architecture in the last decades has been renewing constructive ideas and establishing a relationship with urban areas which need regenerating. Modern architectural theories try to combine the functional and the aesthetic with an ambition which leaves behind old molds. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B10770)
