George Loraine Stampa (1875-1951), "They're comin' nah 'Orace - Let 'im 'ear yer", signed and dated '37, titled in margin, an original illustration, watercolour, image size 30.5 x 23.5cm.; 12 x 9.25in. * G.L. Stampa was born in Constantinople on 29 November 1875. His father, of Franco-Italian descent, was architect to the Sultan Abdul Hamid, and he was forced into leaving Turkey with his family by the political uprising of 1878. As a result, Stampa grew up at his mother's former family home at Battlebarrow House, Appleby, in Westmoreland. He was educated at the local grammar school and, from the age of 11, at Bedford Modern School. He studied art at Heatherley's (1892-93) and, as a contemporary of Heath Robinson and Lewis Baumer, at the Royal Academy Schools (1893-95). He then shared a studio with Savile Lumley. Contributing to Punch from 1894, he worked in the tradition of Keene and May, and made his name with cartoons and illustrations of urchins. Equally important, if less well chronicled, was his role as illustrator to the Punch theatre column, 'At the Play', which he passed to Ronald Searle only in 1949. A versatile artist, who used a wide variety of media, he exhibited at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and the Royal Academy, and was a member of both the Savage Club and the Langham Sketching Club (being Chairman of the latter in 1914). He died on 26 May 1951.

Ann Griffin-Bernstorff (20th/21st Century) CATTLE IN A FIELD, 1986 oil on canvas signed and dated lower right 26½ x 27½in. (67.31 x 69.85cm) Ann Griffin-Bernstorff is a native of Co. Limerick. Having trained as a horticulturist in France, she won the Taylor Art Scholarship in 1963, which saw her move to Paris to study at the Atelier Yves Brayer and Ecole des Beaux Arts. She then came to Dublin where she spent five years training and working as a picture restorer. In 1957 she married a Danish aristocrat, Count Gunnar Bernstorff, and they settled in Berkely Forest, an historic house near New Ross.Ann Griffin-Bernstorff's art is encouraged by a number of influences. Having amassed a fine collection of antique dolls and costumes, her work conveys playful, almost storybook scenarios. She looks to Botticelli as well as early Dutch and Flemish artists. Even at a glance, the influence of the Old Masters is evident, but at the same time Ann’s work inspires an element of fun, drawn straight from her own imagination. The figures depicted in her paintings are plump and pale faced, their attire plucked from a stage costume wardrobe. Each scene is whimsical, often portraying brightly painted images of mythical creatures before a theatrical backdrop. The on-going Ros Tapestry Project is a momentous community scheme based on art and history within the town of New Ross, County Wexford. The project has produced a tapestry comprised of fifteen large panels, each telling the story of the Normans coming to Ireland in the twelfth century. Ann acted as historian for the venture as well as painting the cartoons for each panel, while an assembly of volunteers workedon the stitching of each section.Griffin-Bernstorf's work is to be found in the following Irish public collections: the Office of Public Works, National Self Portrait Collection, University of Limerick and the Lambert Modern Art Collection, Irish Museum of Modern Art, Kilmainham, Dublin. She has exhibited widely in Dublin, Wexford and Derry and internationally in London, Chicago, New York and Miami.

* JOSEPH DAVIE,HEROoil on canvas178.5cm x 150cmFramedNote: Joseph Davie was born in Glasgow in 1965. He studied at Glasgow School of Art during the 80's, when testosterone and figurative painting seemed to go hand in hand. What is so different about Davie is the subtlety and ambiguity of his work. Georgina Coburn (the freelance arts correspondent) has described his work as lyrical, enigmatic, edgy, dreamlike and compelling. She writes : ''Gently provocative Davie delights in the surreal juxtaposition of ideas and materials. The meeting of contradictory characters, cultures or visual elements such as colour, pattern or form, create intriguing dialogues in his work. Davie's wonderfully ambivalent zinc and copperplate etchings, watercolours, oils on canvas and mixed media works inspire an imaginative response. His whole approach to the figure is brilliantly subdued and refreshing. He conveys a sense of the monumental and iconic not through obvious physical scale but in terms of human aspiration.'' His work is in numerous public collections including Glasgow Museum of Modern Art, The Kelvingrove Museum, Historic Scotland and the BBC.

15th century AD. A facetted D-section gold hoop with expanding shoulders, octagonal bezel; zigzag band to top of shoulders and cross potent below; bezel with reserved image of St. Christopher carrying a nimbate Jesus over water, St. Christopher with staff and Jesus with orb surmounted by a small cross. Cf. Dalton, O.M. The Franks Bequest Catalogue of Finger Rings, London, 1912, item 725 for type; Oman, C.C. British Rings 800-1914, London, 1974, plate 22, items C, D. Accompanied by an Art Loss Register certificate. 16 grams, 24mm overall, 21.30mm internal diameter (approximate size British X 1/2, USA 11 3/4, Europe 26.92, Japan 25) (1"). From an important jewellery collection; by descent through the Smigielski family; formerly with the current owner's grandfather Franz Retyk; acquired in Europe by her father or his brother in Belgium during the 1920s. Accompanied by a positive X-Ray Fluorescence metal analysis certificate. There are a number of stories relating to the origins of St Christopher, but the most popular was that recounted in the medieval Golden Legend that recounted him being a giant named Reprobus. He lived in Lycia, Asia Minor, who desires to serve whoever is the most powerful of kings. His first king appears to be afraid of the devil, so Reprobus reasons that the devil must be stronger and seeks him out. But the devil proves to be terrified by a wayside crucifix, so Reprobus abandons him and seeks the man on the Cross. A hermit teaches him about Christ, baptizes him as Christophoros, Christ bearer, and says he should serve the Lord by carrying people across an otherwise unaffordable river. One day Christopher takes a small child on his shoulders, who grows heavier and heavier as they cross the stream. The child explains, thou hast not only borne all the world upon thee, but thou hast borne him that created and made all the world, upon thy shoulders, and reveals himself as the Christ Child. He tells Christopher to plant his staff in the ground and it will bear leaf and fruit the next day. The miraculous staff later enables him to convert thousands of pagans in Lycia. Images of the saint crossing the river with the Christ Child on his shoulders came to be extremely common in western art from the 13th century until modern times. Pilgrims who looked upon an image of St. Christopher were believed to gain a special blessing, so many medieval and later churches put up statues of him on the exterior of the buildings. As the patron saint of travellers the images would also bless those undertaking pilgrimage to the holy places of Europe. Because of this association with travellers and pilgrims his image became popular on jewellery in the form medallions and rings such as this, where he would offer protection. [A video of this lot is available on the TimeLine Auctions website] Very fine condition. A large wearable size.

Lot 780

8th-5th century BC. A large green serpentine standing anthropomorphic figurine, with elongated bald head and cranial deformation, rectangular eyes, wide nose, slightly opened mouth with massive everted upper lip uncovering teeth, pierced rectangular ears; the knees bent and hands pierced to hold an offering(?"). See Fowler Museum at UCLA, Accession number X85.864; The Cleveland Museum of Art, Accession number: 1990.219. 964 grams, 20.6cm (8"). From an important London, W1, collection; acquired 1960-1980s. The Olmecs established major centres along the riverine lowlands of the modern Mexican states of Veracruz and Tabasco, from approximately 1500 BC. The fertile gulf plain probably allowed for an agricultural surplus, controlled by only a handful of individuals. Olmec culture is identified as the oldest of the Mesoamerican civilisations, and many important elements of Mesoamerican art and architecture can be seen to have had a probable Olmec origin. This figure is very similar to one from Offering Four at La Venta. This comprised of a group of fifteen jade and serpentine figures that were specifically set out so that the one figure made from the base stone of granite faced the group made from precious stones. It is possible that the scene recreates a judgement against the lone figure, or possibly a sacrifice scene. Other individual, sinewy jades which are almost feline in their posture have been found in the Olmec heartland. Very fine condition.

Peter Clarke (South African 1929-2014) BACK STREET signed and dated 1950 mixed media on paper 27 by 38cm Peter Clarke, an artist of humble origins began life in with very few opportunities in apartheid South Africa. His intellectual gifts, talent and determination to follow his deep interest in visual art led him to overcome many obstacles, which would finally win him international recognition. This same determination was made vocal at the opening of a major retrospective at the South African National Gallery in 2011 when he explained his principled fight in order to overcome racial exclusion. In the end he was victorious, and today the work of Peter Clarke is highly sought after and the subject of a seminal publication, Listening to distant thunder, the art of Peter Clarke, by art historians Philippa Hobbs and Elizabeth Rankin. In his mid-twenties, Peter Clarke abandoned the security of his job in the Simon’s Town naval yard to follow his calling as an artist. He had an early successful exhibition in District Six, which encouraged him to focus his life’s work around the belief that art could play an active role in social development, which resulted in him becoming a leading figure in the Community Arts Project in Cape Town. We are privileged to offer a compelling selection of works form the artist produced in various media, including works on paper. Two important early works deal with his central focus, that of his community. The poignant, Back Street, lot 764, evokes an anxious moment within the difficult conditions of social inequity and poverty as a result of discriminatory policies in early apartheid South Africa. An important work, in dazzling tones of sea blue and red, it personifies the artist as a social commentator. Windmills, lot 766, is a beautiful and correspondingly joyous work, expressing the artist’s ability to find happiness in everyday life, despite the socio-political turmoil around him. Brilliantly coloured, three school boys are absorbed in the whirling plastic windmills popular with Cape children at Christmas time, when the south-easterly winds roar. Similarly, Evening Grazing, Teslaarsdal, Lot 765, exudes this same escapist quality. Out in the Overberg countryside, Clarke felt at peace and far removed from the turmoil of the city. It was here that he found himself inspired to paint his tranquil, yet decidedly modern pastoral scenes. - Hobbs, P. & Rankin, E., Listening to Distant Thunder: The Art of Peter Clarke, Fernwood Press, Cape Town, 2014
